Honorary Membership. -At the October meeting of the Council, Geoffrey Keynes, author of the “Bibliog- raphy of William Blake,” lately published by the Grolier Club, was elected an Honorary Foreign Cor- responding member of the Club. A Bequest to the Club. -One of the chief interests of the late Hamilton B. Tompkins was the collection of prints suitable for extra-illustrating “Franklin in France” by Edward E. Hale and Edward E. Hale, Jr. 74 In his will he bequeathed the work, which he had en- larged to six volumes, to the Club, together with a sum of money for binding it suitably. The books have recently arrived and, as soon as they have been bound, will be on exhibition in the Library. They will be greatly valued, not only as an important possession, but as a token of the donor’s regard and thought for the Club. Mr. Tompkins had been a member since 1887. The House. Beyond a rearrangement of the Books in the Library and Print Room, the replacing of the descriptive labels for the Club’s collection of Bindings and the usual cleaning, there have been other im- provements during the summer. The walls and ceil- ings of the Club Room have been thoroughly cleaned and the ceilings of the Hall and Librarian’s room have been recalcimined. -

ASSAULTS ON THE FAITH: IMAGINING JEWS AND CREATING CHRISTIANS IN THE LATE MIDDLE AGES By BROOKE FALK A dissertation submitted to the Graduate School-New Brunswick Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey In partial fulfillment of the requirements For the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Program in Art History Written under the direction of Dr. Laura Weigert And approved by New Brunswick, New Jersey January, 2017 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION Assaults on the Faith: Imagining Jews and Creating Christians in the Late Middle Ages By BROOKE FALK Dissertation Director: Laura Weigert My dissertation examines manuscripts and early printed books of the “Fortress of Faith” (Fortalitium fidei) as influential works in late medieval constructions of Jewish and Christian identity. I argue that the “Fortress of Faith” moves beyond traditional polemics in its comprehensive use of popular argumentative approaches, particularly in its use of images, which appealed to a variety of late medieval audiences. I suggest a revised stemma, giving preference to the influence of woodcuts over miniatures. Through both types of images, Christians were armed with mental pictures of themselves as knights guarding a Christian fortress. The first two chapters study surviving manuscripts and incunabula of the text with regard to their material execution, visual imagery, verbal content, and regional production and dissemination. The presentation of the text evolved with its shifting audience from the time it was composed around 1460 by a Castilian Franciscan friar to the time it was translated into French and illuminated around 1480 and also while it was printed numerous times between 1471 and 1525. -

Claire Bolton: ‘Fallen’ type letters. Fig.1 Diagram of a piece of early type. Printing was invented with movable type letters, most probably by Johannes Gutenberg, in Straßburg and Mainz from about 1440-54. A page of text was set, letter by letter into lines, and the lines assembled to make up a full page, ready for inking and printing. What the reader sees is the very tip of the iceberg, the inked letter on the printed page. What the reader does not see is the rest of the piece of type, its body. As Harry Carter stated ‘Type is a 3- dimensional thing’…1. The type body dictates the size of the letters and the space around and between the letters. It also has to be tall enough to handle when setting and distributing the letters for the text. What did earliest type look like? Fig 2. A modern type letter The first clues came in 1868 when two collections of (21 and 212) type letters were discovered in Lyons, in the bed of the river Saône, that have been dated to the end of the fifteenth century, or the beginning of the sixteenth.These were described by Maurice Audin in 1954 in an article in the Gutenberg Jahrbuch and in a separate publication in 1955, where he showed a variety of type letters and spacing of different heights, widths, some with flat feet and some with sloping, some with a nick in the side, some with a hole drilled through.2 A further piece of fifteenth-century type was discovered during an archaeological dig in Basel in 1995, and mentioned by Peter F Tschudin.3 Tschudin states that the letter is 1 Harry Carter, A view of early typography up to about 1600 (Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1967) p. -

Printing was immediately a highly desirable technology, able to meet the fifteenth century’s growing demand for books of all kinds3 by mass-producing the codex form and all that could be included between its two covers. There already existed international markets in Europe for other goods that were traded abroad by merchants, but print functioned differently as a commodity. Whereas wool could be brought to the nearest port for export overseas and simply sold there, handed off to the merchant who would then travel to the next port and sell the product there, a printing press or a fount of type were not simply exchanged for a sum of a money in fifteenth-century Europe4. Printing entailed a crucial difference: its novelty required a very specific and very rare expertise, which meant that those who exported print from its home in Germany very often went with it to its new home in a new culture. -

The category comprehends two types of work: (a) the collections of Roman and Canon law, with their medieval supplements and commentaries; (b) acts and regulations produced by govern- ments and by local authorities as part of their day-to-day activity. After a general overview, this article focuses on the first group of texts, which offers an opportunity to address some key questions related to the impact of printing in a particular cultural context, that of the university. A study of legal texts printed in the 15th century aims to provide a relevant contribution to a better understanding of the impact of printing by comparing elements of continuity and discontinuity with the manuscript and later printed tradition.
