Scholarship opportunities may impact your decision to provide class rank. It is advised that parents and students look closely at each university’s academic scholarship requirements prior to making a final class rank reporting decision. If you have additional questions after reviewing a university’s academic scholarship requirements, please contact the university. If applying to more than one school, select the category based on student’s first choice college and/or the need for scholarship opportunities. Texas A&M University system requires rank from ALL students. Students submitting the Common Application should confer with a Counselor if NOT reporting rank. PUBLIC IN-STATE College/University (UT, A&M, Texas Tech, Texas State, Sam Houston, Angelo State, etc.) 1st Quartile: • Top Ten Percent Automatic Admissions: Students who have achieved automatic admission to state universities based on the top ten percent law should show rank on transcripts. • If a student in this quartile has achieved automatic admission status based on standardized test scores (SAT, ACT), they should show rank for scholarship consideration. 2nd Quartile: • If a student in this quartile and has achieved automatic admission status based on standardized test scores (SAT, ACT), then show rank. • If a student in this quartile has not achieved automatic admission based on standardized test scores (SAT, ACT), then do not show rank and opt for a holistic review of the student’s records. 3rd Quartile: • If a student in this quartile has achieved automatic admission status based on standardized test scores (SAT, ACT) then show rank. • If a student in this quartile has not achieved automatic admission status based on standardized test scores (SAT, ACT), then do not show rank. 4th Quartile • If a student in this quartile has achieved automatic admission status based on standardized test scores (SAT, ACT) then show rank. • If a student in this quartile has not achieved automatic admission status based on standardized test scores (SAT, ACT), then do not show rank. PRIVATE IN-STATE College/University (Rice, SMU, TCU, Baylor, St. Edwards, Huston-Tillotson, etc.) 1st Quartile: • If a student is in this quartile and has achieved the standardized test scores (SAT, ACT), to qualify for a holistic review of the student’s records then show rank. • If a student is in this quartile and has not achieved the standardized test scores (SAT, ACT), to qualify for a holistic review of the student’s records, then do not show rank. 2nd Quartile: • If a student is in this quartile and has achieved the standardized test scores (SAT, ACT), to qualify for a holistic review of the student’s records, then show rank. • If a student is in this quartile and has not achieved the standardized test scores (SAT, ACT) for a holistic review of the student’s records, then do not show rank. 3rd Quartile: • If a student is in this quartile, do not show rank to allow for a holistic review of the student’s records without the cumbersome effects of this rank. Please note that the student should only consider applying to this school if they meet the average standardized test scores (SAT, ACT). 4th Quartile: • If the student is in this quartile, do not show rank to allow for holistic review of the student’s records without the cumbersome effects of this rank. Please note that the student should only consider applying to this school if they meet the standardized test scores (SAT, ACT). PUBLIC OUT-OF-STATE Colleges and Universities (UCLA, University of Michigan, State University of NY, etc) 1st Quartile: • If the student is in this quartile they should show rank whether or not they achieved the standardized test scores (SAT, ACT) for a holistic review of the student’s records. Showing rank will also be beneficial for scholarship consideration. 2nd Quartile: • If the student is in this quartile, they have the option to show or not show rank regardless of the standardized test score (SAT, ACT). A holistic review of student records will be based on GPA rather than rank. 3rd Quartile: • If the student is in this quartile, they should not show rank regardless of the standardized test score (SAT, ACT). A holistic review of student records will be based on GPA. Showing rank may encumber review. 4th Quartile: • If the student is in this quartile, they should not show rank regardless of the standardized test score (SAT, ACT). A holistic review of student records will be based on GPA. Showing rank may encumber review. PRIVATE OUT-OF-STATE Colleges and Universities (Stanford, Harvard, Princeton, MIT, Notre Dame, Hendricks, Loyola, Spelman, etc.) 1st Quartile: • If the student is in this quartile, it is beneficial to show rank for highly competitive colleges in order to compete among peers and compete for merit-based scholarships, especially for those students in the top ten percent. Traditionally, rank is not a factor for admission or need-based considerations for these schools—as holistic review of student records is the process most often used. 2nd Quartile: • If the student is in this quartile, it is beneficial not to show rank. The review process for admission and merit scholarship is generally based on a holistic review of student records. 3rd Quartile: • If the student is in this quartile, it is beneficial not to show rank. The review process for admission and merit scholarship is generally based on a holistic review of student records. 4th Quartile: • If the student is in this quartile, it is beneficial not to show rank. The review process for admission and merit scholarship is generally based on a holistic review of student records. STILL IN DOUBT ABOUT WHAT TO DO? • Consult with the admission office of the college you are considering. • Ultimately, the decision to report rank is a family decision based on a thorough review of the options available.
