The successor to 2008’s Oracular Spectacular and 2010 s Congratulations, MGMT finds Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser continuing to push themselves to expand the boundaries of modern pop music. Returning to Tarbox Road Studios to work with longtime collaborator Dave Fridmann (Co-producer and mixer of Oracular Spectacular and Congratulations, The Flaming Lips, Tame Impala), Andrew and Ben experimented with various in-studio writing processes, allowing the music to tell them where it wanted to go. The result is a diverse and powerful collection of 10 songs (including a cover of “Introspection” by 1960’s psych band Faine Jade) that directly mirrors the duo’s encompassing surrealist view of the everyday. Over the course of their last two albums, MGMT have shown themselves to be as comfortable crafting a solid hook as they are heading off into more psychedelic excursions, often bringing those two sides of themselves together to create an eclectic sound that often feels like the musings of a glam pop band on a peyote-fueled vision quest. After two exploratory albums, MGMT return with their eponymous third album, which finds them continuing to push their sound forward as they return to working with producer Dave Fridmann, who worked on the band’s debut, Oracular Spectacular. While Fridmann is definitely associated with a sense of spaciousness, thanks to his work with iconic acts like the Flaming Lips and Mercury Rev, he’s also a producer who is more about capturing what MGMT are doing than making decisions for them, so while his sonic stamp could be heard on their earlier work, it was clear they weren’t quite making the most of the experience. Six years later, MGMT return to Tarbox Road Studios a more confident and self-assured band, and the difference is palpable. Like Congratulations, MGMT is an album that continues to eschew hooky singles for pop experimentation that isn’t afraid to stay melodic, at least initially. While the album feels daring all the way through, early tracks like “Alien Days” feel relatively straightforward, mining the ornate pop sound of their previous effort. As MGMT continues, though, an unraveling process starts to happen, with the songs becoming increasingly strange as the album progresses through its latter half. It’s in this section that the band makes the most of Fridmann’s talents as a producer and engineer, sending the songs into outer space with layers of reverb-drenched synths and crunchy electronics. Although it’s clear that their infectious, single-heavy debut was no accident, the more experimental aspect of MGMT seems to be their dominant side. While this might be bad news for radio DJs out there praying for another “Kids” or “Electric Feel,” it’s a blessing for music fans desperately waiting for a modern answer to pop experimenters like David Bowie and Sparks. Tracklist: 01 – Alien Days 02 – Cool Song No. 2 03 – Mystery Disease 04 – Introspection 05 – Your Life Is A Lie 06 – A Good Sadness 07 – Astro-Mancy 08 – I Love You Too, Death 09 – Plenty Of Girls In The Sea 10 – An Orphan Of Fortune. Umphrey’s McGee Brendan Bayliss: Guitar, vocals Jake Cinninger: Guitar, vocals Joel Cummins: Keyboard, piano, vocals Andy Farag: Percussion Kris Myers: Drums, vocals Ryan Stasik: Bass After 18-plus years of performing more than 100 concerts annually, releasing nine studio albums and selling more than 4.2 million tracks online, Umphrey’s McGee might be forgiven if they chose to rest on their laurels. But then that wouldn’t be consistent with the work ethic demonstrated by the band, which consistently attempts to raise the bar, setting and achieving new goals since forming on the Notre Dame campus in South Bend, Indiana, in 1997. After releasing their eighth studio album, Similar Skin, the first for their own indie label, Nothing Too Fancy (N2F) Music (distributed by RED), the group continued to push the envelope and test the limits. The London Session, was a dream come true for the members having been recorded at the legendary Studio Two at historic Abbey Road. The stealth recording session yielded 10 tracks in a single day, proving once again, the prolific UM waits for no one. As a follow up to The London Session, the envelope pushing continues with the November 11th release of ZONKEY. Umphrey’s McGee has been arranging and performing original mashups live for over eight years. It was only a matter of when, not if, some of those innovative concoctions would find their way into a studio. An album of 12 unique mashups, conceived and arranged by the band, ZONKEY is as seamless as it bizarre, playful as it is razor sharp.

west coast music Midnight Special Please find attached the Midnight Special song list for your review. SPECIAL DANCES for Weddings: Please note that we will need your special dance requests, (I.E. First Dance, Father/Daughter Dance, Mother/Son Dance etc) FOUR WEEKS in advance prior to your event so that we can confirm that the band will be able to perform the song(s) and that we are able to locate sheet music. In some cases where sheet music is not available or an arrangement for the full band is need- ed, this gives us the time needed to properly prepare the music and learn the material. Clients are not obligated to send in a list of general song requests. Many of our clients ask that the band just react to whatever their guests are responding to on the dance floor. Our clients that do provide us with song requests do so in varying degrees. Most clients give us a handful of songs they want played and avoided. Recently, we’ve noticed in increase in cli- ents customizing what the band plays and doesn’t play with very specific detail. If you de- sire the highest degree of control (allowing the band to only play within the margin of songs requested), we ask for a minimum of 100 requests. We want you to keep in mind that the band is quite good at reading the room and choosing songs that best connect with your guests. The more specific/selective you are, know that there is greater chance of losing certain song medleys, mashups, or newly released material the band has.

Hanks: A festival everyone can enjoy http://www.statesman.com/opinion/hanks-a-festival-everyone-can-enjoy-... Print this page Close Hanks: A festival everyone can enjoy Anna Hanks, LOCAL CONTRIBUTOR Published: 6:45 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 12, 2010 I had an unexpected realization during the Flaming Lips set at the Austin City Limits Music Festival. Watching the Oklahoma-based band closing their show with "Do You Realize??" I discovered tears steaming down my face. I was so embarrassed that I quickly donned my sunglasses, hoping no one noticed. The song includes the following lyrics sung slowly by the Lips' frontman Wayne Coyne: "Do you realize — that everyone you know someday will die And instead of saying all of your goodbyes — let them know You realize that life goes fast It's hard to make the good things last ... " Listening to the lyrics, I started thinking about how fragile our bodies really are. They bleed. Things break. They don't especially enjoy the unaccustomed exercise of traipsing around Zilker Park for three days in the sun. I spent a lot of time thinking about bodies and physical limitations while talking to people using the festival's accommodations for people with disabilities. Yet it wasn't until seeing the Flaming Lips play that song that I examined why I had chosen to write about this issue. A dozen years ago, my father started using a wheelchair. Since then, I've spent considerable time determining what's really accessible for a large man in a power chair. Thus, I often notice curb cuts, handicap bathrooms and well-located wheelchair ramps.

Keywords Kevin Parker, Tame Impala, producent, inspelning, trummor, musikanalys. Innehållsförteckning

Politics Business Science Sport Roses Freshers Freshers › Colleges Societies YUSU Campus City Domestic Survival Sport The Freshers’ Soundtrack Music Editor Chris Owen offers some album recommendations for your first weeks at University, whether you’re studying, partying or missing home Tuesday 29 September 2015 There are lots of decisions to make in your first weeks at university: what should I wear, which societies should I join, what should I eat, would it be a good idea to jump in the lake, et cetera, et cetera. As seasoned students, we hope that we can impart some wisdom to make things easier (the answers to those questions are anything, all of them especially Nouse, anything, and absolutely not, in case you were wondering). As the paper’s resident Music nerd, I’ve taken it upon myself to help with some choices of a musical nature, so you can concentrate on deciding the important things. Below are some albums that might come in handy for various points in your first few weeks at university – and if you absolutely have to jump in the lake, do it to some Queen. For pre-drinking Arriving at agreement for the pre-drinks music can be trickier than you’d think, especially in the face of that overbearing Music student flatmate and the wasted one who only wants to listen to ‘Uptown Funk’. But there are plenty of agreeable options to flesh out a playlist to appeal to all. The Killers – Hot Fuss You’ll be hearing ‘Mr Brightside’ at least twice a night each time you go out, so you’d better make sure you learn all the words beforehand if you don’t know them already.

  • MGMT: Little Dark Age
MGMT: Little Dark Age spectrumculture.com/2018/02/11/mgmt-little-dark-age-review/ Daniel Bromfield One imagines a pang of dread shooting through the members of MGMT as their debut album, Oracular Spectacular, turned 10 last month. For better or for worse, Oracular Spectacular is now a classic, and its three titanic hit singles—“Kids,” “Time to Pretend” and “Electric Feel”—show no signs of going away. Most bands would be pleased to have a legacy set in stone, but MGMT have spent the better part of the last decade trying to distance themselves from pop stardom and prove to the world—or to themselves— that they’re a serious experimental band. They’ve succeeded, sort of. Though most of the world will always know MGMT for their hits, we no longer have any safe expectations for the “next MGMT album,” and it makes perfect sense that they’re ditching the psych-poppet affectations to reposition themselves as compadres of Ariel Pink and John Maus. Little Dark Age, the duo’s long-gestating fourth album, casts them as graveyard goths whose madcap sense of humor barely keeps the bad vibes at bay. That it works is a testament to just how unpredictable this band has become in its experimental period. This feels like the logical endpoint of the band’s hermeticism. While Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser once presented themselves as cult leaders, with “the handshake under our tongue,” here they’re more like mad prophets broadcasting their ravings to the world from a dingy basement. The music is mid-fi, shrouded in filters that feel like the musical embodiment of the band’s misanthropy, and the dominant instrument isn’t synth or guitar but Matt Asti’s bass, which burbles nauseously out of the gloom.

:: View email as a web page :: In a recent edition of Uproxx’s “Ask A Music Critic” column, we were asked about our favorite “career-killer follow-up” albums. You know what we’re talking about: A band has a huge hit debut, and then instead of making another record that attempts to replicate that success, the band goes the opposite way and alienates many of the people who originally loved them. One album that came immediately to mind was Congratulations, the 2010 LP by MGMT that essentially transformed them from the kings of late-aughts dorm-room indie-pop — it can’t be overstated how popular songs like “Kids” and “Electric Feel” still are — to a weird outsider psych outfit who never regained the mainstream popularity they once had. Congratulations arrived at a moment when the indie wave of the aughts was about to crash against the critical vogue of poptimism and the commercial consolidation around massive pop stars that has defined the corporate and homogenized streaming era. What I love about Congratulations is that MGMT steered into the crash.
