22Nd and Final Season of Atlanta Braves Spring Training Underway at Disney 22nd and Final Season of Atlanta Braves Spring Training Underway at Disney The Atlanta Braves’ 2019 spring training season at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at Walt Disney World Resort officially begins Friday, Feb. 15, when pitchers and catchers report to Champion Stadium. The Braves have trained at Disney since 1997 and now begin their 22nd and final season at Disney. Winners of the 2018 National League East crown, the Braves are moving their spring training operations to Sarasota County (North Port, Florida) for the 2020 Major League Baseball season. The team is hoping to start its 2019 season off right at Disney, beginning a quest for its first consecutive division championship since the 2004 and 2005 seasons. Here are five key facts for the final season of Braves spring training at Disney: Atlanta will play a 16-game home spring training schedule at Champion Stadium beginning Monday, Feb. 25, when it hosts the Washington Nationals at 1:05 p.m. The Braves will play their final spring training home game at Champion Stadium on Saturday, March 23, against the New York Mets. Atlanta is moving spring training operations to Sarasota County (North Port, Fla.) in 2020. Atlanta will play three spring training games against two clubs that qualified for the 2018 postseason (Houston Astros, March 4 & 17); and the New York Yankees (March 18). Braves will play three night games under the lights during 2019 spring training action – Philadelphia Phillies, March 8; New York Yankees, March 18; and Detroit Tigers, March 22. Disney character appearances and special moments such as kids running the bases after every game are some of the entertainment opportunities that make Braves spring training at Disney a unique experience. Individual spring training game tickets are still available at www.espnwwos.com/braves, through Ticketmaster outlets (800-745-3000) and at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex Box Office. Tickets range from $15 (general admission berm seating in left field) to $59 (lower level reserved seats). When the gates opened the stadium began filling to 33% capacity, our eyes drawn to “44” etched in center field as “real” fans replaced the cardboard cutouts of 2020. We eagerly anticipated a much needed in-person baseball experience. It was high time for a rematch of the opening series in Philly, which had not gone well for our guys. Charlie Morton vs. Zack Wheeler rebooted. Braves fans were pumped! What would Opening Night at a Braves game be without evoking memories of the franchise’s 50+ years relationship with the city of Atlanta and the South? A moving pregame ceremony paid tribute to the passing of Bill Bartholomay, Phil Niekro, Don Sutton, and Hank Aaron, highlighting their legendary contributions to the team, the game of baseball, and our community. Fan Club member Wayne Coleman (pictured bottom right) played “Amazing Grace” on bagpipes. Timothy Miller sang the “National Anthem.” Jets flew over. Fans stood and cheered. Daily (Boston College) Sport culture is something of great interest to citizens ranging from sociology scholars 1 to sports fans. The performance rituals that accompany sport include victory dances, school songs, cheers, and mascots. As Rick Minter, a mascot historian writes, “We all care about the symbols, nicknames, and legends of our club – mascots make them real again. They are a bit of our club that we can reach out and touch” (7). If we accept Minter’s conceptualization, what is the theoretical foundation that supports these representations? They make us laugh, we enjoy their athleticism, and kids love them; however, their lineage and purpose runs far deeper than their presence in the arena. This paper argues that mascot performances represent fetishized aspects of sport culture, and specifically, that such rituals embody the ability to relate to and influence the providence of a chosen athletic team. Arguably, the success of college and professional sport teams rests on their ability to claim triumph, and mascot performances are an integral part of that process to those who believe in their power. While sports fans enjoy mascots for their physicality as furry caricatures that dance along the sidelines, their significance is founded on a supernatural power relationship. The performance of mascots perpetuates their fetishized status in sports ranging from high school soccer to professional football.
