The Newsletter of the Atlanta 400 Baseball Fan Club February 2019 The Newsletter of the Atlanta 400 Baseball Fan Club ________________________________________________________________________________ February 2019 By Dave Badertscher; photos by Linda Lovejoy The Atlanta 400 Baseball Fan Club held its annual Gameboree banquet and fundraiser on Saturday, January 19, 2019, at the Atlanta Marriott Northwest at Galleria. This year’s theme was “All-Stars, Gold Gloves and National League Honors.” More than 180 Braves fans, honored guests, and Braves officials turned out for the Fan Club’s largest event of the year. Emcee Paul Byrd (pictured below) was a big hit. The reception and silent auction opened at 5:00 with a fine selection of Braves and other baseball memorabilia. Thanks go to Silent Auction and Raffle Coordinator Nate Morgan and his crew, as well as to Fan Club members who generously donated items. As usual, all proceeds go to the Phil Niekro Scholarship Fund. This year guests in the Auction Room were entertained by Braves organist Matthew Kaminski. Quite a nice treat! Once everyone was seated for dinner in the Cobb Ballroom, Fan Club President Howard Evans introduced the guests and award winners at the head table. Atlanta’s favorite tenor, Timothy Miller, sang “The Lord’s Prayer.” During dinner folks enjoyed a slide presentation highlighting the Fan Club’s many fun and worthwhile activities over the past year. Following dinner, Howard thanked Club members who were involved in planning, organizing, and setting up this year’s event, especially Gameboree Program Coordinator Wayne Coleman and Logistics Coordinator Judy Messer. Howard talked about upcoming Club activities in 2019, including six monthly social gatherings in the SunTrust Cabanas, our Major League trip to Washington, DC, on June 21-23, and minor league trips to see the Rome Braves and the Gwinnett Stripers this summer. Details and sign-up will be available on our website (www.atl400.org) closer to the dates of the events. The Tomahawk Times February 2019 Page 2 Howard announced that this year 400 Fan Club members will again have an exclusive members-only Braves ticket discount. For all Sunday through Thursday games, excluding Opening Day, visit www.braves.com/400club and use promo code ‘400CLU’ to receive 20% off the gate price for seats in the Dugout Corner, Home Run Porch and Grandstand Reserved sections. Howard then introduced the evening’s emcee, Braves pitcher and announcer, Paul Byrd. They shared insights on our theme “All-Stars, Gold Gloves and National League Honors.” Not only did the Braves win the National League East by eight games, but team members collected many individual awards and honors. The 2018 Braves had four National League All-Stars, three Gold Glove winners, the NL Rookie of the Year, and the NL Manager of the Year. 2018 Atlanta 400 Baseball Fan Club Awards Red Wooten Metro Atlanta High School Player of the Year: Will Banfield (Brookwood H.S) (accepted by fellow Brookwood student, Jacob Oldknow) Jason Varitek Most Outstanding Scholar Athlete in Georgia: Joey Bart (Georgia Tech) (accepted by Georgia Tech Head Coach, Danny Hall) Phil Niekro Scholarship Awards: Georgia Gwinnett College (Lawrenceville) Middle Georgia State University (Macon) Luke Appling Nostalgia Award: Ron Reed (Braves, Cardinals, Phillies, White Sox; Detroit Pistons) Jacob Oldknow accepts HSPOY for Will Banfield Danny Hall accepts Varitek Award for Joey Bart Brad Stromdahl, Gwinnett Georgia College Paul Knight, Middle Georgia State Univ. He makes everyone feel important. Brian treats everyone the right way and I love him. So many players have said they just want to go out there and do everything they can for him.” Brian said it was a pleasure to be among his many friends in the 400 Fan Club. “I’m very proud to be an Atlanta Brave. The minor league people do an unbelievable job. Our coaches and scouts are the hardest working in baseball. This is a great time for the Braves Nation. Our young guys are out there having fun playing baseball. That is so refreshing.” The Club donated a check for $1,000 to Brian’s chosen charity, the Tim and Kim Hudson Family Foundation. The Tomahawk Times February 2019 Page 4 2019 Ivan Allen, Jr., “Mr. Baseball” Award Wayne Coleman, 2014 “Mr. Baseball,” presented this year’s award. Wayne recognized one of the largest gatherings of past Mr. Baseballs at a Gameboree and asked each recipient to stand (see photo below). The “Mr. Baseball” Award is given annually to the “person who has contributed significantly to the promotion of baseball in the Atlanta area.” The 2019 “Mr. Baseball” recipient is legendary coach, Hugh Buchanan. He was the first baseball coach at Parkview High School where during his 29 seasons (1976-2004), his teams won three state titles. Hugh finished with a career record of 546-245 for a winning percentage of .690. Parkview named its baseball field after him. Hugh was co-founder of and served as Team Georgia director for twelve years. He is now a professional scout for the Atlanta Braves. 2019 Eddie Glennon Gameboree: Faces in the Crowd To view more 2019 Gameboree photos visit: www.atl400.org/photo-gallery/gallery62/ The Tomahawk Times February 2019 Page 5 By Howard Evans, President Atlanta 400 Baseball Fan Club What a dramatic way to start the New Year! The 2019 Gameboree, our traditional start of the season event, with over 180 in attendance, capped off the Braves Chop Fest weekend on January 19th. Master of Ceremonies, Paul Byrd, took us through the Awards ceremonies with a mixture of humor and storytelling, as we celebrated the 2018 season. If you couldn’t make it, you missed a spectacular night, as the audience finished the night on their feet in a standing ovation. Much credit is due to Paul Byrd, Phil Niekro, and the Braves for their participation and support. A special thanks goes to all our Board and members, who devoted so much time over a period of months on the planning and detailed execution for the event. Recognition is due to Presidential Advisor, Wayne Coleman, who for the umpteenth consecutive year as Program Chair, had overall responsibility for making the Gameboree a memorable fan experience. Turning the page to the 2019 Season, Spring Training is about to open. By the time you read this, the popping of leather and the smell of the grass permeate the air. Atlanta Braves Clippings Thursday, September 10, 2020 Braves.com Braves set NL standard with 29-run outburst Atlanta breaks Modern Era record in National League (since 1900) By Mark Bowman ATLANTA -- Adam Duvall produced his second three-homer game within an eight-day span to help the Braves roll to a record-setting 29-9 win over the Marlins on Wednesday night at Truist Park. Duvall became the first player to record two three-homer games while wearing a Braves uniform, and his efforts helped Atlanta set a National League record for runs in a game in the modern era (since 1900). “That was pretty amazing to be a part of,” Braves first baseman Freddie Freeman said. “I’ve never seen an offense click like that.” The Braves fell just one run short of tying the modern record for runs scored in a game, set when the Rangers defeated the Orioles, 30-3, in the first game of a doubleheader on Aug. 22, 2007, at Camden Yards. Dating back to 1900, no NL club had scored more than 28 runs in a game. The Braves’ franchise record was 23, a mark tallied during the second game of a doubleheader against the Cubs on Sept. 2, 1957. Ronald Acuña Jr. contributed to his three-hit night with a three-run home run to cap a six-run fifth. But it was his bases-loaded double in the sixth inning that gave the Braves a new franchise record for runs in a single game, opening a 25-8 lead. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Atlanta became the first MLB team to score at least 22 runs through the first five innings since the Blue Jays (24 runs) in a win over the Orioles on June 26, 1978.

  • Mascots: Performance and Fetishism in Sport Culture
Platform , Vol. 3, No. 1 Mascots: Performance and Fetishism in Sport Culture Mary C. Daily (Boston College) Sport culture is something of great interest to citizens ranging from sociology scholars 1 to sports fans. The performance rituals that accompany sport include victory dances, school songs, cheers, and mascots. As Rick Minter, a mascot historian writes, “We all care about the symbols, nicknames, and legends of our club – mascots make them real again. They are a bit of our club that we can reach out and touch” (7). If we accept Minter’s conceptualization, what is the theoretical foundation that supports these representations? They make us laugh, we enjoy their athleticism, and kids love them; however, their lineage and purpose runs far deeper than their presence in the arena. This paper argues that mascot performances represent fetishized aspects of sport culture, and specifically, that such rituals embody the ability to relate to and influence the providence of a chosen athletic team. Arguably, the success of college and professional sport teams rests on their ability to claim triumph, and mascot performances are an integral part of that process to those who believe in their power. While sports fans enjoy mascots for their physicality as furry caricatures that dance along the sidelines, their significance is founded on a supernatural power relationship. The performance of mascots perpetuates their fetishized status in sports ranging from high school soccer to professional football. In the discussion of fetishization, one must be forgiving of possible oversimplifications present in the summarizing of various theorists, as the paper’s 1 James Frey and Günter Lüschen outline both collegiate and professional athletics, exploring competition, reception, and cultural significance.

Atlanta Braves Clippings Monday, September 21, 2020 Braves.com Wright baffles Mets in 6 1/3-inning, 1-hit gem By Mark Bowman Ronald Acuña Jr. was bound to right himself before the postseason arrived. But the fact Kyle Wright has also started the regular season’s home stretch on a good note gives the Braves even more reason to be excited about what October might bring. Acuña’s solo homer provided all of the necessary support for Wright, who constructed a career-best start in the Braves’ 7-0 win over the Mets on Sunday afternoon at Citi Field. The right-hander’s confidence has grown significantly as he’s used his past two starts to show he has the potential to lessen concerns about the postseason rotation. “He’s been tremendous,” said catcher Travis d’Arnaud, who hit a two-run double in the eighth inning. “His demeanor on the mound and his demeanor in between innings, he’s been carrying himself really well. He’s just been attacking guys.” The Braves’ magic number to clinch a third consecutive National League East title has been reduced to six with seven games remaining, four of which will be played against the second-place Marlins this week. Looking ahead to the postseason, the Braves’ rotation will likely include Max Fried, Ian Anderson, Cole Hamels and Wright, who had essentially been a candidate by default before he produced two of the strongest starts of his young career over the past eight days. Wright earned his first career win with six strong innings at Nationals Park last weekend.

Atlanta Braves Clippings Monday, June 29, 2020 Braves.com Braves set player pool; 4 spots remain By Mark Bowman ATLANTA -- Less than three weeks after being drafted, Jared Shuster was placed in the 60-man player pool the Braves submitted to Major League Baseball on Sunday afternoon. Shuster is not expected to make his MLB debut this year. But his inclusion on this list creates the opportunity for him to spend the next couple of months working out with some of the top members of the Braves’ development staff. First and foremost, these 60-man player pools were designed for teams to designate which members of their organization will be eligible for the 60-game regular season, which is slated to begin on July 23 or 24. But with a Minor League season this year seeming unlikely, teams also chose to fill some of these spots with their top prospects. The Braves’ pool actually includes each of their top 12 prospects (per MLB Pipeline’s rankings). But only two or three of those prospects has a shot of being added to Atlanta’s active roster at some point this year. The members of this prospect group who could be used by Atlanta this year include outfielders Cristian Pache and Drew Waters, right-handers Ian Anderson, Kyle Wright, Bryse Wilson, Jasseel De La Cruz and Huascar Ynoa, and left-handers Kyle Muller and Tucker Davidson. Shuster, a left-handed pitcher taken in this year's Draft with the 25th overall pick out of Wake Forest, is part of the group of prospects added to this list just to get some experience this year.
