OXFORD 2014 PREFACE This book is about how we might make sense of the idea that truth is relative, and how we might use this idea to give satisfying accounts of parts of our thought and talk that have resisted traditional methods of analysis. Although there is a substantial philosophical literature on relativism about truth, going back to Plato’s Theaetetus, this literature (both pro and con) has tended to focus on refutations of the doctrine, or refutations of these refutations, at the expense of saying clearly what the doctrine is. The approach here will be to start by giving a clear account of the view, and then to use the view to solve some problems that have concerned philosophers and semanticists. The main aim is to put relativist solutions to these problems on the table, so that they may be compared with non-relativist solutions and accepted or rejected on their merits. Comparatively little space will be devoted to blanket objections to the coherence of relativism, because these will largely be dispelled by a clear statement of the view. When I finished graduate school, I would never have guessed that my first book would be a defense of relative truth. To proclaim oneself a relativist about truth, I assumed, was to ally oneself with the kind of postmodernist scepticism about the objectivity of science that the physicist Alan Sokal lampooned in his famous hoax article for Social Text (Sokal 1996b; Sokal 1996a). I regarded relativism about truth as hopelessly confused, easily refuted, and a sure sign of deficient intellectual character. And I was not alone in this: I did not know of a single prominent analytic philosopher who espoused relativism about truth, or even took it seriously enough to spend more than a few pages on it. What happened? I have not changed my view that there is an objective world, or we can come to know about it using the methods of science. And I still think that most talk of relative truth has been hopelessly muddled. But I have become convinced that relativism about truth can be made philosophi- cally intelligible, even to hard-headed scientific realists, and that it is a good tool for understanding parts of our thought and talk that fall short of being fully objective. My own path to relativism began not with the usual worries about taste and morality, but with reflections on the semantics of contingent statements vi Preface about the future, inspired mainly by Belnap and Green (1994). By June of 2002, I had concluded that the natural setting for a Belnap/Green-style approach to future contingents was a framework in which truth was relativized to both a context of use and a context of assessment. I presented this idea at ECAP IV in Lund, Sweden, where I found a fellow traveler: Max Kölbel, who had just finished Truth Without Objectivity (2002). By the end of August, 2002, I had written a manuscript “Three Grades of Truth Relativity,” which was the germ of the present book. (Though this paper was never published, a self-standing treatment of future contingents was published as MacFarlane 2003.) At this time, the philosophical literature was full of discussions of various forms of contextualism, and I could see that the relative-truth framework I had applied in “Three Grades” to future contingents, accommodation, and evaluative relativism had applications in these areas as well. I worked out two of these—to knowledge-attributing sentences and to epistemic modals—in summer 2003, and presented them as talks at Stanford, Utah, and Yale. (These became MacFarlane 2005a and MacFarlane 2011a.) Conversations with Jeff King and Jason Stanley spurred me to think more about how one might do relativist semantics in a propositional (rather than a sentential) framework, and the result was my Aristotelian Society paper “Making Sense of Relative Truth” (MacFarlane 2005c). Others had been working independently along parallel lines. Andy Egan, John Hawthorne, and Brian Weatherson came out with their own relativist treatment of epistemic modals (Egan, Hawthorne, and Weatherson 2005). Mark Richard noticed the applications to knowledge attributions and ac- commodation (Richard 2004). And the linguist Peter Lasersohn, working at first in isolation from the emerging literature in philosophy, wrote an in- fluential paper arguing for a relativist treatment of predicates of personal taste, employing a modification of Kaplan’s semantics for indexicals that was very similar to my own approach in “Three Grades” (Lasersohn 2005). In September, 2005, LOGOS sponsored a well-attended conference on relativist semantics in Barcelona. What continued to distinguish my work from others’ was the notion of a context of assessment. Others had made the move of relativizing propositional truth to parameters other than worlds, such as judges, perspectives, or stan- dards of taste. But I had argued in MacFarlane (2005c) that this alone was not enough to make one a relativist about truth in the most philosophically interesting sense. The interesting divide, I argued, is between views that allow Preface vii truth to vary with the context of assessment and those that do not. My next batch of papers (2007a, 2009, 2008) was devoted to making this point in more detail, and to fleshing out the distinction between “nonindexical contextualist” views, which relativize propositional truth to nonstandard parameters but do not posit assessment sensitivity, and genuinely “relativist” views. In Spring 2007 I sat in on my colleague Niko Kolodny’s seminar on reasons and rationality, and this led to a fruitful and ongoing collaboration. Niko helped me bring my semantic ideas into contact with important debates in the literature on practical reasoning. Our joint paper (Kolodny and MacFarlane 2010) applied relativist ideas to the semantics of deontic modals and indicative conditionals. This is a large project, with many interconnecting parts, and journal papers have not been the ideal medium for presenting it. Without the applications, the foundational ideas appear abstract and sterile; but the applications cannot be adequately explained without the foundational ideas. Moreover, because it would not be rational to make significant changes in one’s semantic frame- work just to handle one recalcitrant construction, it is important to see that there are many systematically related applications of the proposed framework. Hence I have always envisioned a book-length treatment covering founda- tions and applications in a unified way. Though the present book draws on earlier articles, with a few exceptions I have written everything afresh, remov- ing inconsistencies, improving explanations, and responding to criticism that has appeared in the literature. Analytic philosophers are now considerably more open to relativism about truth than they were when I began this project. My initial aim was merely to place relativist views on the table as real options. Many of those who initially accused these views of incoherence have come around to regarding them as merely empirically false. I am grateful for the company, and I hope that the book is still timely.     ABSTRACT: Bernard Williams is a sceptic about the objectivity of moral value, embracing instead a certain qualified moral relativism—the ‘relativism of distance’. His attitude to blame too is in part sceptical (he thought it often involved a certain ‘fantasy’). I will argue that the relativism of distance is unconvincing, even incoherent; but also that it is detachable from the rest of Williams’ moral philosophy. I will then go on to propose an entirely localized thesis I call the relativism of blame, which says that when an agent’s moral shortcomings by our lights are a matter of their living according to the moral thinking of their day, judgements of blame are out of order. Finally, I will propose a form of moral judgement we may sometimes quite properly direct towards historically distant agents when blame is inappropriate—moral-epistemic disappointment. Together these two proposals may help release us from the grip of the idea that moral appraisal always involves the potential applicability of blame, and so from a key source of the relativist idea that moral appraisal is inappropriate over distance. Of course, one can imagine oneself as Kant at the court of King Arthur, disapproving of its injustices, but exactly what grip does this get on one’s ethical or political thought?1 Bernard Williams famously argued for a distinctive brand of moral relativism, which he regarded as capturing the truth in relativism, and which he called the relativism of distance.

Indeed, within its pages, Sartre characterizes many of the hallmarks of existentialist thought, including subjectivity, freedom, responsibility, anguish, forlornness, despair, and so on. Perhaps most importantly, however, Sartre’s “Existentialism and Humanism” occasions a defense of existentialism against its most frequently dealt criticisms, particularly the essentialist charge that existentialism necessarily gives rise to ethical relativism. And while this defense may seem convincing at first, in many places, it also seems to abandon, for the sake of its project, the fundamental commitments of existentialism, at least as Sartre understands them. Thus, in this essay, I critically examine the coherence of Sartre’s defense of existentialism against the essentialist charge of ethical relativism. To the extent that that defense relies largely upon his espousal of an existentialist ethics, I examine, in particular, whether that ethics coheres with the fundamental commitments of existentialism as he understands them. Following this examination, I conclude that (a) the fundamental commitments of existentialism preclude Sartre from coherently positing objectively valid normative ethical statements, that (b) because he nonetheless posits such statements in his espousal of an existentialist ethics, his defense of existentialism against the essentialist charge of ethical relativism breaks down, and finally, that (c) although this incoherence presents a substantial problem for Sartre, one may still defend his attempt to espouse an existentialist ethics.

Some of the typical criticisms of moral relativism are the following: moral relativism is erroneously committed to the principle of tolerance, which is a universal principle; there are a number of objective moral rules; a moral relativist must admit that Hitler was right, which is absurd; a moral relativist must deny, in the face of evidence, that moral progress is possible; and, since every individual belongs to multiple cultures at once, the concept of moral relativism is vague. Park argues that such contentions do not affect moral relativism and that the moral relativist may respond that the value of tolerance, Hitler’s actions, and the concept of culture are themselves relative. In what follows, I show that Park’s adroit strategy is unsuccessful. Consequently, moral relativism is incoherent.     Theory Reflections: Linguistic Determinism/Relativism The Theory The theory of linguistic determinism and relativity presents a two-sided phenomenon: Does the specific language (and culture) we are exposed to in childhood determine, in fact, how we perceive the world, how we think, and how we express ourselves? If this is so, then, it must also be the case that each language (and the culture it represents) necessarily provides its speakers with a specific and differing view of that same world, a different way of thinking, and a different way of expressing. This notion is related to a parallel issue that has existed throughout the centuries—are there also universal absolutes that transcend all linguistic (and cultural) particulars? Recent research suggests there may be elements of both. Linguistic determinism came to the attention of linguists and anthropologists during the 1930s, prompted by the work of Benjamin Lee Whorf. Using prevailing linguistic approaches of his time, Whorf, who studied indigenous languages, found surprising contrasts with European tongues in terms of how they reflected and spoke about reality (e.g., how they segment the time continuum, construct lexical hierarchies and, in short, encode a different view of the world, or Weltanschauung). The Whorf-Sapir hypothesis, as it came to be known (Sapir was his teacher), gained increasing attention and prompted the notion of language determinism/relativity. In other words, the language we are born to has a direct effect upon how we conceptualize, think, interact, and express—a direct relationship between human language and human thinking This notion has remained at the center of a debate for more than half a century.

    JAEGWON KIM CAUSES AS EXPLANATIONS: A CRITIQUE* Causes certainly are connected with effects; but this is because our theories connect them, not because the world is held together by cosmic glue. 1 Norwood Russell Hanson ABSTRACT. This paper offers a critique of the view that causation can be analyzed in terms of explanation. In particular, the following points are argued: (1) a genuine explanatory analysis of causation must make use of a fully epistemological-psychological notion of explanation; (2) it is unlikely that the relatively clear-cut structure of the causal relation can be captured by the relatively unstructured relation of explanation; (3) the explanatory relation does not always parallel the direction of causation; (4) certain difficulties arise for any attempt to construct a nonrelativistic relation of caus- ation from the essentially relativistic relation of explanation; and (5) to analyze causation as explanation is to embrace a form of "causal idealism", the view that causal connec- tions are not among the objective features of the world. The paper closes with a brief discussion of the contrast between the two fundamentally opposed viewpoints about causality, namely causal idealism and causal realism. It is little more than a truism to say that causes explain their effects, or that to ask for the cause of an event is to ask for an explanation of why or how the event occurred. This close association between causation and explanation is amply mirrored in language: we answer 'why'-questions with 'becuase'- statements, and surely there is more than an orthographic resemblance between 'cause' and 'because'. The association is also ancient: it goes back to Aristotle, who characterized true, scientific knowledge as knowledge of the 'why' of things, that is, knowledge of the cause that makes a thing what it is and not something else.

Instead, right and wrong are based on social norms. Such could be the case with "situational ethics," which is a category of ethical relativism. At any rate, ethical relativism would mean that our morals have evolved, that they have changed over time, and that they are not absolute. One advantage of ethical relativism is that it allows for a wide variety of cultures and practices. It also allows people to adapt ethically as the culture, knowledge, and technology change in society. This is a good and valid form of relativism. The disadvantage of ethical relativism is that truth, right and wrong, and justice are all relative. Just because a group of people think that something is right does not make it so. Slavery is a good example of this. Two hundred years ago in America, slavery was the norm and morally acceptable. Now it is not. Relativism also does not allow for the existence of an absolute set of ethics. Logically, if there are no absolute ethics, then there can be no Divine Absolute Ethics Giver. Requiring an absolute set of ethics implies an Absolute Ethics Giver, which can easily be extrapolated as being God. This would be opposed to ethical relativism. Therefore, ethical relativism would not support the idea of an absolute God, and it would exclude religious systems based upon absolute morals; that is, it would be absolute in its condemnation of absolute ethics.

    Moral Relativism Explained Gilbert Harman 1 What Is Moral Relativism? According to moral relativism, there is not a single true morality. There are a variety of possible moralities or moral frames of reference, and whether something is morally right or wrong, good or bad, just or unjust, etc. is a relative matter—relative to one or another morality or moral frame of reference. Something can be morally right relative to one moral frame of reference and 1 morally wrong relative to another. It is useful to compare moral relativism to other kinds of 2 relativism. One possible comparison is with motion relativism. There is no such thing as absolute motion or absolute rest. Whether something is moving or at rest is relative to a spatio- temporal frame of reference. Something may be at rest in one such frame of reference and moving in another. There is no such thing as absolute motion and absolute rest, but we can make do with relative motion and rest. Similarly, moral relativism is the view that, although there is no such thing as absolute right and wrong, we can make do with relative right and wrong. 3 Paul Boghossian suggests a different comparison. When people decided that there were no witches and no such thing as witchcraft, they did not become relativists about witches; they gave up their beliefs about witches.     Sławomir Wacewicz LANGUAGE AND THINKING: MOTIVES OF PINKER’S CRITICISM OF WHORFIAN LINGUISTIC RELATIVISM In The Language Instinct (1995 [1994], henceforth: TLI), a book that despite its popular character has become virtually a classic in discussions concerning the innateness of language, Steven Pinker attacks the broadly understood “Whorfian” standpoint according to which human thinking is influenced in fundamental ways by one’s native language. Due to the status of the author and popularity of the book, it is an influential voice in the ongoing debate on the mutual relation between language and “thought.” Rather than joining this debate, in the present text I would like to examine the construction and integrity of Pinker’s argumentation in TLI. I suggest that this author’s attack on broadly understood interdependence of language and thought is motivated by his general theoretical commitments, rather than by independent evidence. 1. Introduction and the reconstruction of Pinker’s initial position The best way of reconstructing Steven Pinker’s initial position is by situating his views in the general spectrum of approaches present in contemporary Cognitive Science. Pinker’s principal commitments appear to be evolutionary, which is visible in his popular reception, where he is recognised as an evolutionary psychologist much more readily than as a linguist or psycholinguist. Such a theoretical inclination often goes together with two general views: nativism and modularism; views that are separable, but related and mutually supporting. Steven Pinker is an advocate for both nativism and modularism with respect to language, as well as to cognition in general. In crudest terms, nativism is a view according to which human knowledge (or, more generally, the content of the human mind) is in some vital part innate.
