Dwight Clark, 61, Dies; Made a Touchdown Catch for the Ages https://www.nytimes.com/2018/06/05/obituaries/dwight-clark-61-dies-m... Dwight Clark, 61, Dies; Made a Touchdown Catch for the Ages Dwight Clark making what came to be called simply “The Catch” to tie the score with less than a minute to go in the 1982 N.F.C. championship game in San Francisco. The 49ers beat the Dallas Cowboys, 28-27.CreditPhil Huber/The Dallas Morning News, via Associated Press Dwight Clark, the wide receiver whose spectacular last-minute leaping touchdown reception, known as “The Catch,” propelled the San Francisco 49ers toward the first N.F.L. championship in their history and ushered in their dominance of the league through the 1980s, died on Monday in Whitefish, Mont. He was 61. His death was announced by his wife, Kelly, on his Twitter account. He revealed in March 2017 that he had amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, the degenerative nerve-cell disorder known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. Clark was only a 10th-round pick by the 49ers in the 1979 N.F.L. draft, having caught just three touchdown passes playing for Clemson. But, teaming up with the future Hall of Fame quarterback Joe Montana, he became a leading pro receiver. With 58 seconds remaining in the January 1982 National Football Conference championship game between the underdog 49ers and the Dallas Cowboys on a soggy Candlestick Park field, San Francisco had the football on the Dallas 6-yard line, trailing by 6 points. It was third down with 3 yards to go.

  • Joe Montana Reading Comprehension Name______
Joe Montana Reading Comprehension Name_______________________ Joe Montana is known as one of the greatest quarterbacks in the history of the National Football League (NFL). He was born on June 11, 1956, in Pennsylvania. He was offered a basketball scholarship to North Carolina State University, but ended up going to the University of Notre Dame to play football instead. In 1979, he was selected by the San Francisco 49ers in the NFL Draft. Montana played as starting quarterback for the 49ers. The position of quarterback is an important one that requires leadership, quick decision-making skills, and strategy. Montana had all of the above, and he was known for bringing the team to victory even in the last few moments of the game. This earned him the nickname “Joe Cool.” Montana led the 49ers to his first Super Bowl victory in 1982. In the game before the Super Bowl, Montana threw a touchdown pass to wide receiver Dwight Clark with only 51 seconds left in the game, giving them the win. This iconic play is known as “The Catch”. The 49ers won the Super Bowl again in 1985. The following spring, the 49ers drafted Jerry Rice as a wide receiver. Rice and Montana worked well as a pair, and were a star passing combination for six seasons. With Montana on the team, the 49ers won the Super Bowl again in 1989 and 1990. However, Montana suffered an elbow injury that forced him to miss every game but one in the 1991 and 1992 seasons. By the time he had recovered, the 49ers had established a new quarterback: Steve Young.

REACTION TO DWIGHT CLARK’S ALS ANNOUNCEMENT “Dwight Clark is one of those guys that lights up the room – always smiling and making you feel great. When I heard the news, I like others in the 49er family, was devastated. DC changed the course of the 49ers with the catch. Don’t be surprised if he changes the course of this disease as well. Love you brother!” - Harris Barton, 49ers teammate “Dwight has been an integral part of my family’s life for almost four decades. We are absolutely devastated. We vow to do everything in our power to support Dwight and Kelly and help them fight this horrible disease.” - Eddie DeBartolo, Pro Football Hall of Fame Owner “Dwight is like a brother to me. This news crushed me. I’ve vowed to him to be here for whatever he needs from me. Whenever or wherever. He deserves all our heartfelt support.” - Roger Craig, 49ers teammate “There is nothing tougher than watching a great friend go through a serious health challenge. Dwight is handling this adversity with uncommon strength and the heart of a courageous champion, and our family’s thoughts and prayers are constantly with Dwight and Kelly. I know that they are fully aware that we will continue to walk alongside them, and do anything and everything possible to help them through this tough time.” - Brent Jones, 49ers teammate “Heartbreaking news. My pal, he’s such a great friend. I can imagine what a great teammate he must’ve been. He’s the absolute first guy I’d want in my foxhole.
