His teams lost only once in a season seven different times and his 1956 squad is still the only unbeaten-untied (9-0-0) team in Owls’ history. After retiring as football coach, Dow continued to serve as director of athletics until 1975. A former Little All-America fullback at West Texas State who played with the Philadelphia Eagles for three seasons, Dow also coached Southern teams in track, basketball, baseball and golf. • New York Giants 2012 Season Recap 2012 New York Giants
NEW YORK GIANTS 2012 SEASON RECAP The 2012 Giants finished 9-7 and in second place in the NFC East. It was the eighth consecutive season in which the Giants finished .500 or better, their longest such streak since they played 10 seasons in a row without a losing record from 1954-63. The Giants finished with a winning record for the third consecutive season, the first time they had done that since 1988-90 (when they were 10-6, 12-4, 13-3). Despite extending those streaks, they did not earn a postseason berth. The Giants lost control of their playoff destiny with back-to-back late-season defeats in Atlanta and Baltimore. They routed Philadelphia in their finale, but soon learned they were eliminated when Chicago beat Detroit. The Giants compiled numerous impressive statistics in 2012. They scored 429 points, the second-highest total in franchise history; the 1963 Giants scored 448. The 2012 season was the fifth in the 88-year history of the franchise in which the Giants scored more than 400 points. The Giants scored a franchise- record 278 points at home, shattering the old mark of 248, set in 2007. In their last three home games – victories over Green Bay, New Orleans and Philadelphia – the Giants scored 38, 52 and 42 points. The 2012 team allowed an NFL-low 20 sacks. The Giants were fourth in the NFL in both takeaways (35, four more than they had in 2011) and turnover differential (plus-14, a significant improvement over 2011’s plus-7). The plus-14 was the Giants’ best turnover differential since they were plus-25 in 1997.

Dwight Clark, 61, Dies; Made a Touchdown Catch for the Ages Dwight Clark making what came to be called simply “The Catch” to tie the score with less than a minute to go in the 1982 N.F.C. championship game in San Francisco. The 49ers beat the Dallas Cowboys, 28-27.CreditPhil Huber/The Dallas Morning News, via Associated Press Dwight Clark, the wide receiver whose spectacular last-minute leaping touchdown reception, known as “The Catch,” propelled the San Francisco 49ers toward the first N.F.L. championship in their history and ushered in their dominance of the league through the 1980s, died on Monday in Whitefish, Mont. He was 61. His death was announced by his wife, Kelly, on his Twitter account. He revealed in March 2017 that he had amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, the degenerative nerve-cell disorder known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. Clark was only a 10th-round pick by the 49ers in the 1979 N.F.L. draft, having caught just three touchdown passes playing for Clemson. But, teaming up with the future Hall of Fame quarterback Joe Montana, he became a leading pro receiver. With 58 seconds remaining in the January 1982 National Football Conference championship game between the underdog 49ers and the Dallas Cowboys on a soggy Candlestick Park field, San Francisco had the football on the Dallas 6-yard line, trailing by 6 points. It was third down with 3 yards to go.

  • Joe Montana Reading Comprehension Name______
Joe Montana Reading Comprehension Name_______________________ Joe Montana is known as one of the greatest quarterbacks in the history of the National Football League (NFL). He was born on June 11, 1956, in Pennsylvania. He was offered a basketball scholarship to North Carolina State University, but ended up going to the University of Notre Dame to play football instead. In 1979, he was selected by the San Francisco 49ers in the NFL Draft. Montana played as starting quarterback for the 49ers. The position of quarterback is an important one that requires leadership, quick decision-making skills, and strategy. Montana had all of the above, and he was known for bringing the team to victory even in the last few moments of the game. This earned him the nickname “Joe Cool.” Montana led the 49ers to his first Super Bowl victory in 1982. In the game before the Super Bowl, Montana threw a touchdown pass to wide receiver Dwight Clark with only 51 seconds left in the game, giving them the win. This iconic play is known as “The Catch”. The 49ers won the Super Bowl again in 1985. The following spring, the 49ers drafted Jerry Rice as a wide receiver. Rice and Montana worked well as a pair, and were a star passing combination for six seasons. With Montana on the team, the 49ers won the Super Bowl again in 1989 and 1990. However, Montana suffered an elbow injury that forced him to miss every game but one in the 1991 and 1992 seasons. By the time he had recovered, the 49ers had established a new quarterback: Steve Young.
