The writing, directing, performances and replay value are amazing in and of themselves. I especially love the premise, and I will review this movie as it's own film, not a remake. What really makes it wonderful is the incredible performances and suspense. I really love all the actors' and actresses' dedication and believability, there being very memorable deliverances of lines and scenes after the film is over. The suspense is top-notch, because of how well the movie is played out and how creepy and fun the material is, that I was both eyes on the screen every second. Naomi Watts is radiant and brilliant; the scenes where she slowly puts the pieces of the puzzle together, or uncovers something dark and haunting are haunting themself because of how marvelous she makes this material. Do not get me wrong, the material itself is great, but it would have been nothing were it not for the cast. The characters are all interesting, and the main story is quite saddening and effective when it is slowly revealed through many different aspects. While it seems as though the main threat, a "killer videotape", would be a ridiculous and stupid threat, hard to make convincing, it undoubtedly works to the fullest here and is entirely convincing, the videotape's images and the events themselves all being very interesting and entertaining. While the movie is not a masterpiece, it is not too short from it, having a great replay value and being one of the top 20 most effective horrors of the 00s, in my opinion. I am glad it receives a lot of positive reception, for it deserves every bit of it. Did You Know? Quotes Katie : I hate television. The professional monitoring is such a reasonable price for anyone. Much better than my other provider and what I love about ring is the endless possibilities for smart home integration and the extremely customizable alarm. I have spent months researching different alarms and cameras no one even comes close to ring, the spotlight cams are one of a kind with so many features and amazing video quality ring gives a whole new meaning to home security. The customer support is superb with the shortest hold times and helpful representatives. I installed the alarm and four stick up cams solar in less than an hour. That brings me to another great thing about the ring cams is the many options for power supply, solar, battery, mount, wired it gives you the ability to mount your camera anywhere and still have power and the additional battery option is great. In January , Paramount released a prank video where an actress dressed as Samara jumped out of a television to scare unwitting patrons at an electronics store. The site's critical consensus reads, " Rings may offer ardent fans of the franchise a few threadbare thrills, but for everyone else, it may feel like an endless loop of muddled mythology and rehashed plot points. Alex Gilyadov of IGN gave the film a score 4. Dowd of The A. Club commented that the film was a pale imitation of the American remake in terms of visuals and plot structure. He also dismissed the film's characters as "bland nothings", citing their lack of development in the story. Other international critics applauded the film. Mike McCahill of The Guardian commented that the film "smoothly reinvents the wheel", pointing out that "the admirably loopy finale, involving blind Vincent d'Onofrio's swarming army of cicadas, is worthy of one of the better Exorcist sequels". The final numbers in the global box office pushed Paramount to consider making another film in The Ring Franchise. Speaking at CinemaCon, Paramount Vice Chairman Rob Moore said that should the film prove successful, more sequels could recur annually, taking the place of Paramount's Paranormal Activity series.

Making Markets for Japanese Cinema: A Study of Distribution Practices for Japanese Films on DVD in the UK from 2008 to 2010 Jonathan Wroot PhD Thesis Submitted to the University of East Anglia For the qualification of PhD in Film Studies 2013 1 Making Markets for Japanese Cinema: A Study of Distribution Practices for Japanese Films on DVD in the UK from 2008 to 2010 2 Acknowledgements Thanks needed to be expressed to a number of people over the last three years – and I apologise if I forget anyone here. First of all, thank you to Rayna Denison and Keith Johnston for agreeing to oversee this research – which required reining in my enthusiasm as much as attempting to tease it out of me and turn it into coherent writing. Thanks to Mark Jancovich, who helped me get started with the PhD at UEA. A big thank you also to Andrew Kirkham and Adam Torel for doing what they do at 4Digital Asia, Third Window, and their other ventures – if they did not do it, this thesis would not exist. Also, a big thank you to my numerous other friends and family – whose support was invaluable, despite the distance between most of them and Norwich. And finally, the biggest thank you of all goes to Christina, for constantly being there with her support and encouragement. 3 Abstract The thesis will examine how DVD distribution can affect Japanese film dissemination in the UK. The media discourse concerning 4Digital Asia and Third Window proposes that this is the principal factor influencing their films’ presence in the UK from 2008 to 2010.

  • The Monster-Child in Japanese Horror Film of the Lost Decade, Jessica
The Asian Conference on Film and Documentary 2013 Official Conference Proceedings Osaka, Japan “Our Fear Has Taken on a Life of its Own”: The Monster-Child in Japanese Horror Film of The Lost Decade, Jessica Balanzategui University of Melbourne, Australia 0168 The Asian Conference on Film and Documentary 2013 Official Conference Proceedings 2013 Abstract The monstrous child of Japanese horror film has become perhaps the most transnationally recognisable and influential horror trope of the past decade following the release of “Ring” (Hideo Nakata, 1999), Japan’s most commercially successful horror film. Through an analysis of “Ring”, “The Grudge” (Takashi Shimizu, 2002), “Dark Water” (Nakata, 2002), and “One Missed Call” (Takashi Miike, 2003), I argue that the monstrous children central to J-horror film of the millenial transition function as anomalies within the symbolic framework of Japan’s national identity. These films were released in the aftermath of the collapse of Japan’s bubble economy in the early 1990s — a period known in Japan as ‘The Lost Decade’— and also at the liminal juncture represented by the turn of the millennium. At this cultural moment when the unity of national meaning seems to waver, the monstrous child embodies the threat of symbolic collapse. In alignment with Noël Carroll’s definition of the monster, these children are categorically interstitial and formless: Sadako, Toshio, Mitsuko and Mimiko invoke the wholesale destruction of the boundaries which separate victim/villain, past/present and corporeal/spectral. Through their disturbance to ontological categories, these children function as monstrous incarnations of the Lacanian gaze. As opposed to allowing the viewer a sense of illusory mastery, the J- horror monster-child figures a disruption to the spectator’s sense of power over the films’ diegetic worlds.

  • Reviews of the Ring Series the Ring Series, Also Known As “Ringu
Reviews of The Ring Series The Ring series, also known as “Ringu” or just “Ring”, is considered the founding factor in the west’s interest in Japanese horror and helped bridge the gap between international films. Based on a series of novels written by Koji Suzuki, the films revolve around a cursed videotape that kills anyone who watches it after seven days. Though the first book is a horrormystery, its two sequels Spiral and Loop are a medical mystery and a science fiction mystery respectively, all having intriguing storylines and plot twists that explore the sinister virus that originates from the videotape rather than a haunting curse. The Ring series has spawned a TV movie, two TV series, a fantastic Japanese film series, a crumby Korean film, and a respectible American movies too. And we’re gonna review all of them in this megareview. The franchise reflects a lot of modern fears in society – a fear of technology, urban legends, deadly illnesses (the AIDS scare in the 1980s and 1990s), unexpected pregnancy (as seen in Spiral), and the more traditional scares of evil and monsters. The main antagonist, Sadako Yamamura, takes a lot of inspiration from Japanese mythology and traditions. She is an “onryō”, or a vengeful female spirit, sporting the traditional long stringy hair and wears a white dress. Her origin is based on several folktales, most notably about a woman who is chucked down a well, where she dies and rises as a ghost. Obviously, there will be spoilers for the books and films throughout these minireviews, so be weary.
