THE ROSARY IS A CROWN OF ROSES. IN THE MIDDLE AGES, SOME MONKS COULD NOT READ. INSTEAD OF RECITING THE 150 PSALMS, AS THE OTHER MONKS DID, THEY SAID 150 OUR FATHERS. IN THE 11TH CENTURY, THIS CHANGED TO 150 HAIL MARYS AND WAS KNOWN AS OUR LADY’S PSALTER. ST. DOMINIC RECEIVED THE ROSARY IN ITS PRESENT FORM DIRECTLY FROM THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY IN THE YEAR 1214. THEN, IN 1569 POPE ST. PIUS V SET THE FIFTEEN MYSTERIES. THE NAME “ROSARY” WAS FIRST USED LATER THAT SAME CENTURY. THE FIFTEEN MYSTERIES OF THE ROSARY ARE DIVIDED INTO THREE SETS: THE JOYFUL, GLORIOUS AND SORROWFUL MYSTERIES. EACH OF THOSE CAN BE CONSIDERED A ROSARY BY ITSELF ALTHOUGH A “FULL ROSARY” USUALLY REFERS TO ALL FIFTEEN DECADES. WHEN REVIEWING THE INDULGENCES WHICH THE CHURCH HAS APPLIED TO THE ROSARY, IT IS INTERESTING TO NOTE THAT THEY EACH APPLY TO “A THIRD PART”. THE MOST IMPORTANT IS A PLENARY INDULGENCE FOR SAYING THE ROSARY IN CHURCH.
