Tracy and Pearl Cleage, black In the plays of Georgia Douglas Johnson, Alice Childress, protectors of identity, and women are often portrayed as defenders of the physical self, playwrights examined the guardians of the future. This study will examine how these playwright will be looked at specifically issue of protection in their plays. Slavery was not yet abolished when the African Grove Theatre was established. Its creation ran contrary to slavery's most powerful and damaging precept, which stated blacks were inferior and uncultured. The lack of entertainment options for free blacks, due to segregation, was the major motivator in William Henry Brown's creation of the theater in 1821. Based in New York City, in the back of Brown's house, the company began as a tea garden called The African Grove. In this setting free blacks could partake of food, drink, music, and the reading of poetry and drama. Another free black, James Hewlett, furthered Brown's mission by insisting that the entertainment haven become a the place of drama as well. On the heels of Reconstruction, a generation of black artists and intellectuals—often the first in their families born after the thirteenth amendment—spearheaded the movement. Using art as a means by which to comprehend and to reclaim aspects of their identity which had been stolen during the Middle Passage, these artists were also living in a time marked by the resurgence of the Ku Klux Klan and segregation. It stands to reason, then, that the work that has survived from this period is often rife with political and personal motivations. Male figureheads of the movement are often remembered for their divisive debate as to whether or not black art should be politically charged. The public debates between men like W. E. B. Du Bois and Alain Locke often overshadow the actual artistic outputs, many of which are relegated to relative obscurity. Black female artists in particular are overshadowed by their male peers despite their significant interventions. Two pioneers of this period, Georgia Douglas Johnson (1880-1966) and Eulalie Spence (1894-1981), will be the subject of my thesis.

I argue that with this focus, the plays wage their own war for African American citizenship rights, using language and performance to gain access to the “imagined” community of the nation. Yet plays from different time periods focus on diverse aspects of the Great War; these differences provide insight into how World War I was thought of and employed, and for what purposes, in African American communities during the interwar years. The project fills an important gap in African American drama, theatre, and war literature scholarship; no book-length analysis exists, yet scholarly conversations surrounding African Americans in the Great War are energetic. Despite scholars’ arguments that the war “gave birth” to the New Negro, the plays that dramatize the subject have drifted into obscurity. Thus, this project is overdue; the plays complete the historical picture of African American drama and provide a better understanding of the ways contemporary life in the United States is still haunted by World War I.

On June 14 and 15, 1982, the Landmarks Preservation Commission held a public hearing on the proposed designation as a Landmark of the Cort Theater and the proposed designation of the related Landmark Site (Item No. 24). The hearing was continued to October 19, 1982. Both hearings had been duly advertised in accordance with the provisions of law. Eighty witnesses spoke or had statements read into the record in favor of designation. One witness spoke in opposition to designation. The owner, with his representatives, appeared at the hearing, and indicated that he had not formulated an opinion regarding designation. The Commission has received many letters and other expressions of support in favor of this designation. DESCRIPTION AND ANALYSIS The Cort Theater survives today as one of the historic theaters that symbolize American theater for both New York and the nation. Built in 1912- 13, the Cort is among the oldest surviving theaters in New York. It was designed by arc hi teet Thomas Lamb to house the productions of John Cort , one of the country's major producers and theater owners. The Cort Theater represents a special aspect of the nation's theatrical history. Beyond its historical importance, it is an exceptionally handsome theater, with a facade mode l e d on the Petit Trianon in Versailles.
