ISSUE 964 February 20, 2020 Torrance News Torch Lighting the Way to Torrance High School Since 1922 LOVE IS IN THE AIR AT THS SCHOOLING EXTRAVAGANZA! BY ASHLEY MERCURIO Club Writer The Torrance High School Academic Decathlon team par- ticipated in a two day competition at El Rancho High School on January 25 and February 1. The first day of competition included prepared and impromptu speeches and essays while the second day included testing in seven subjects and the super quiz (a Jeopardy style event where the teams have to answer questions from all seven testing subjects). The teams for Academic Decathlon are divided by a per- son’s unweighted GPA and are placed within either Honors, Scho- lastic, or Varsity with three spaces in each sub-team. The sub-teams compete against each other in testing and super quiz to win medals. On February 6, a banquet was held for the LACOE Aca- Torrance High School demic Decathlon teams at Montebello, CA to announce medalists Academic Decathalon in each subject and school ranking. The THS Acadec team won 13 medals and placed 19 out of 39 in overall school ranking. This is an Team 0f 2019-2020 amazing achievement for our AcaDec participants! THE PHILOSOPHY OF STEVEN SODERBERGH The Philosophy of Popular Culture Th e books published in the Philosophy of Popular Culture series will illuminate and explore philosophical themes and ideas that occur in popular culture. Th e goal of this series is to demonstrate how philosophical inquiry has been reinvigorated by increased scholarly interest in the intersection of popular culture and philosophy, as well as to explore through philosophical analysis beloved modes of entertainment, such as movies, TV shows, and music. Philosophical concepts will be made accessible to the general reader through examples in popular culture. Th is series seeks to publish both established and emerging scholars who will engage a major area of popular culture for philosophical interpretation and examine the philosophical underpinnings of its themes. DATE: August 12, 2010 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE ABOUT THE COMPANY Sophocles' Elektra Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, September 9—October 2, 2010 Carey Perloff (Director) Carey Perloff is celebrating her nineteenth season as artistic director of Tony Award-winning American Conservatory Theater (A.C.T.) in San Francisco, where she is known for directing innovative productions of classics, championing new writing for the theater, and creating international collaborations with such artists as Robert Wilson and Tom Stoppard. Before joining A.C.T., Perloff was artistic director of Classic Stage Company (CSC) in New York. She is a recipient of France’s Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres and the National Corporate Theatre Fund’s 2007 Artistic Achievement Award. Perloff received a B.A. Phi Beta Kappa in classics and comparative literature from Stanford University and was a Fulbright fellow at the University of Oxford. She has taught at the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University and in the Master of Fine Arts Program in Acting at A.C.T., in addition to authoring numerous plays. This is Perloff’s second encounter with Sophocles’ Elektra, having directed the world premiere of Ezra Pound’s version of the play at CSC in 1988. Timberlake Wertenbaker (Translator/Adaptor) Timberlake Wertenbaker is an acclaimed playwright who grew up in the Basque Country in southwest France. Práce analyzuje Malickovy filmy s ohledem na režisérův vlastní vztah k přírodě, čímž se zásadně odlišuje od jiných prací s podobným zaměřením. Práce je rozdělena do dvou vzájemně provázaných částí. První, biografická část se detailně zaobírá Malickovým životem se zvláštním akcentem na události a díla, které se výrazněji dotýkají tématu práce. Druhá část pak pojednává o vztahu Malickových postav k přírodě a zároveň podává ucelený obraz toho, jakým způsobem Malick ve svých filmech přírodu pojímá. Abstract: The following bachelor's thesis discusses nature in the films of the renowned American director, screenwriter and producer Terrence Malick. -
