Ry The Harper Anthology of Academic Writing Issue IX 1997 William Rainey Harper College T h e Harper Anthology Human language has the potential to be insensitive, ugly, even brutish. And yet we want to think, too, Foreword that Aristotle was right, that words are indeed what set human beings apart from the balance of the ani mal kingdom. We want to trust that just around the corner from the vulgar phrase lurks a sentence that resonates with ravishing poetry. We hope, as we pass ungraspable utterances, that we will come upon the sounds of words that are clear, frank, and true. The HarperAnt hology Selection Committee is determined and optimistic about unearthing lan guage that possesses clarity, frankness, and truth; we believe that human beings will, in obedience to cer tain internal impulses, fashion words uniquely and express themselves transparently, sometimes beauti fully. Most of all, we believe that good writing poetic, lyrical, illustrative, substantive, altogether soulful writing-is perennial, like baseball.

Contemporary Issues in Technology Education P John Williams Kay Stables Editors Critique in Design and Technology Education Contemporary Issues in Technology Education Series Editors P John Williams Curtin University, Perth, Australia Alister Jones University of Waikato, Hamilton, New Zealand Cathy Buntting University of Waikato, Hamilton, New Zealand Contemporary Issues in Technology Education - About this series Technology education is a developing field, new issues keep arising and timely, relevant research is continually being conducted. The aim of this series is to draw on the latest research to focus on contemporary issues, create debate and push the boundaries in order to expand the field of technology education and explore new paradigms. Maybe more than any other subject, technology education has strong links with other learning areas, including the humanities and the sciences, and exploring these boundaries and the gaps between them will be a focus of this series. Much of the literature from other disciplines has applicability to technology education, and harnessing this diversity of research and ideas with a focus on technology will strengthen the field. HUNT Wesley House, 10 Milton Park, Redfield, Bristol, BS5 9HQ Email: [email protected] ABSTRACT With particular reference to Gattyʼs British Sea-Weeds and Eliotʼs ʻRecollections of Ilfracombeʼ, this article takes an ecocritical approach to popular writings about seaweed, thus illustrating the broader perception of the natural world in mid-Victorian literature. This is a discursive exploration of the way that the enthusiasm for seaweed reveals prevailing ideas about propriety, philanthropy and natural theology during the Victorian era, incorporating social history, gender issues and natural history in an interdisciplinary manner. Although unchaperoned wandering upon remote shorelines remained a questionable activity for women, ʻseaweedingʼ made for a direct aesthetic engagement with the specificity of place in a way that conforms to Barbara Gatesʼs notion of the ʻVictorian female sublimeʼ.

A/AC.105/705 A/CONF.184/BP/16 Office for Outer Space Affairs United Nations Office at Vienna Space Activities of the International Organizations A review of the activities and resources of the United Nations, its specialized agencies and other international bodies relating to the peaceful uses of outer space UNITED NATIONS New York, 1999 UNITED NATIONS PUBLICATION Sales No. E.99.1.24 ISBN 92-1-100821-2 Foreword Since the beginning of the space age, over 40 years ago, humanity has made significant progress in the development and use of space science and technology to address human needs. Many satellites have been placed in orbit and now provide daily data that are used for forecasting the Earth's weather and management of natural resources and disasters, as well as for environmental monitoring. Other satellites provide communication linkages that have greatly enhanced economic and social development while bringing countries closer together. Many challenges remain, however. Unsustainable patterns of production and consumption are putting increasing pressure on the Earth's environment. The physical interaction mechanisms among oceans, land, atmosphere and solar radiation are not fully understood. Natural disasters cause damage totalling billions of dollars and significantly set back development programmes. Large segments of the world population, in particular in rural areas of developing countries, are in need of education and health services. Improved space capabilities and international cooperation could assist in dealing with those and other important issues, thus promoting economic and social progress. Recognizing the need for constructing a practical, well-defined framework for future international cooperation in space activities, the United Nations decided to convene a Third Conference on the Exploration and Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (UNISPACE HI), to be held in Vienna from 19 to 30 July 1999.

  • The Philosophy of Wole Soyinka's Art Dele Layiwola
Spring 1996 19 The Philosophy of Wole Soyinka's Art Dele Layiwola The Philosophy of Wole Soyinka's Art Soyinka's theory of drama is constructed on reformulations of the terms of previous ritual approaches to drama and is most usefully discussed in relationship to the earlier theories which it modifies. The tradition of dramatic theory linking ritual and drama extends from the origin of western dramatic theory in Aristotle's Poetics to nearly all modern dramatic criticism in English, and has manifested a unique concern with discussing dramatic import in terms of audience affect. This concern with audience affect requires that the discussion of ritual theories of drama include analysis of the concepts of audience affect which have been developed by various theorists, as well as an examination of their concepts of ritual and drama. —Ann B. Davis1 Both D. S. Izevbaye and Annemarie Heywood have written about the essence of speech and silence in Soyinka's writings. The former says of one of Soyinka's most imaginative plays, The Road, that: The Road is itself a dramatization of the limits of language. So a stylistic analysis in which we examine the relationship of characters deployed down a linguistic ladder from Professor the talkative one to Murano the mute one would tell us only part of the story, not only in the usual theatrical sense in which visual items complement dramatic speech, but because in this play that which is heard is challenged by that which is seen.2 In a similar vein, Annemarie Heywood sees Soyinka's as a dramatizing imagination and that even his lyrics appear like voiced incantations or declaimed Dr.
