Gold, Andrea Lee, M.S., August 1997 Wildlife Biology Habitat use of black bears in the northeast Cascades of Washington Director: Dr. Christopher W. Servheen I examined habitat use of black bears in the northeast Cascade Mountains of Washington during 1995 and 1996. I obtained 1916 aerial radiolocations for 26 black bears and analyzed habitat selection within annual home ranges. I used a vegetation map created for the North Cascades Grizzly Bear Ecosystem to define habitat variables and compared 3 habitat use analysis techniques. I compared the results of the univariate chi-square method and the multivariate compositional analysis method using point relocations. Habitat use studies which use the chi-square method violate the unit sum constraint presented by proportional use versus availability data. The chi square method also violates assumptions of independence with use of relocation summaries as the sample size, rather than individual bears, whereas compositional analysis satisfies these requirements. I then compared compositional analysis at two scales, point (telemetry relocation) and area (buflfered relocation). I examined use within the area surrounding the telemetry relocation with a radius equivalent to the median aerial telemetry error for this study (230 meters). I found the original form of the vegetation map had too many habitat classes for practical statistical analyses, and the pixel size too large for accurate mapping of important small habitat components. However, vegetation classes could be combined to produce a bear habitat map. All habitat use methods indicated black bears exhibited habitat selection. Chi-square results suggested black bears selected for douglas-fir, riparian forests, and deciduous forests, and selected against hemlock, other conifers, fire and bare ground. Compositional analysis with point relocations (CAP) suggested riparian forest, douglas-fir and meadows were the 3 most important habitat classes. Results of compositional analysis with buffered relocations (CAA) were similar to CAP, but CAA displayed greater resolution and suggested deciduous forest and ponderosa pine were also important to bears. Riparian and mesic sites, and mosmcs of open and forested areas are important to black bears in the northeast Cascades. Habitat classes selected for or important to bears tended to display slightly greater but statistically not significant bear food plant species diversity. Compositional analysis of habitat selection with area data provided a more sound scientific analysis of habitat use and improved reliability of results. 11 Reproduced with permission of the copyright owner.     Rare Plant Inventory and Community Vegetation Survey Squilchuck State Park Cypripedium montanum,mountain lady’s-slipper, on the state Watch list, present at Squilchuck State Park Conducted for The Washington State Pakrs and Recreation Commission PO Box 42650, Olympia, Washington 98504 Conducted by Dana Visalli, Methow Biodiversity Project PO Box 175, Winthrop, WA 98862 In Cooperation with the Pacific Biodiversity Institute December 31, 2004 Rare Plant Inventory and Community Vegetation Survey Squilchuck State Park In the summer of 2004, at the request of and under contract to the Washington State Parks Commission, a rare plant inventory and community vegetation survey was conducted at Squilchuck State Park by Dana Visalli and assisting botanists and GIS technicians. Squilchuck State Park is a 263 acre park on the east slope of the Cascade Mountains in Central Washington, located largely in the transition zone between shrub-steppe and montane forest. Plant community polygons were delineated prior to the initiation of field surveys using or- thophotos and satellite imagery. These polygons were then ground checked during the vegetation surveys, which were conducted simultaneously with the rare plant inventories. All plant associa- tions were determined using theField Guide for Forested Plant Associations of the Wenatchee National Forest(Lilybridge et al, 1995) The Douglas-fir dominated forest above the lodge, on the eastern slopes of the park. The forest on this east slope is in places heavily overstocked and the trees supressed. Vegetation surveys and plant inventories were conducted by two field personnel (one bota- nist, one GIS technician) on June 11th, and again by 4 field workers on August 13 (two botanists and two GIS technicians).

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Baseline wildlife and habitat surveys were initiated in 2007 to support a future impact assessment for the redevelopment of two existing, but currently inactive, open pit mines southwest of Kamloops. Detailed Project plans were not available at that time, so the general areas of activity were buffered to define a study area. The two general Project areas at the time were New Afton, an open pit just south of Highway 1, and Ajax, east of Jacko Lake.

Abstract Co-supervisors: Dr. Geraldine Allen, Dr. Joe Antos The dynamics of peripheral populations provide insight into range limits and rarity. I studied sympatric populations of two species of mariposa lilies with contrasting distributions: Calochortus lyallii, a regional endemic of central Washington and southern British Columbia, and C. macrocarpus, a more widespread taxon. Marked plants were monitored for five years in the Okanagan highlands, at the northern range limit for C. Zyallii and near the elevational limit for C. macrocarpus. Life table data were used to generate stage-classified matrix population models for three populations of each species and, for C. lyallii, different microsites and plant densities. My objectives were to evaluate the demographic variation of C. lyallii among populations, microsite types and density classes, and to identify demographic differences between C. lyallii and C. macrocarpus that might contribute to their differing occurrence patterns. Annual population growth rates (lambdas) for C. lyallii ranged from 0.89 to 1.07 among populations, 0.87 to 1.29 among microsite types, and 0.86 to 1.07 among density classes. Life table response experiment analyses showed that inter-population and inter-microsite variances in lambda resulted mostly from variance in large adult fecundity, whereas the variance in lambda among density classes was mostly due to variance in vegetative stasis.

This information represents what was known at the end of the 1994 field season. These maps may not represent the most recent information on distribution and range for these taxa but it does illustrate geographic distribution across the assessment area. For many of these species, this is the first time information has been compiled on this scale. For the continued viability of many of these taxa, it is imperative that we begin to manage for them across their range and across administrative boundaries. Of the 173 taxa analyzed, there are maps for 153 taxa. For those taxa that were not tracked by heritage programs, we were not able to generate range maps.
