The Rotary Club of Kidman Park Inc From President Jenny Harris Cynthia Wynne spoke at our last Tuesday’s meeting. She told us of the Barwell Boys Scheme that happened in Australia from 1922- 1924. This was a South Australian Farm Apprentice Scheme which was devised by the then Premier of South Australia, Henry Barwell. It was introduced to replace in some way the 6000 SA men who died in World War 1. There were more than 1440 boys aged 15-18 years of age that came from the UK and were given assisted pas- sage in ships and sent to farms across the state. The boys were giv- en a variety of experiences depending on where they were sent. Cynthia Wynne The wages they earnt were sent to a trust account and their clothes etc. were paid from this. The promise of “the land of milk and honey” turned out to be more like “bloody hard work and no honey” for many of the boys. Some of the boys ended up liv- ing in poor conditions and worked long hours. Some boys finished their apprenticeship and made a good life here in Australia. Cynthia’s father was one of the Barwell boys. He went to Millicent and paid off his passage. It must have been a very difficult time for many of these boys, being such a long way from home and I am sure many would have been very home sick. Thank you to Warren for providing an excellent and overwhelming submission to continue the Rotary Bookmart within the City of Charles Sturt. I know we are in good hands with Warren at the helm and Stuart’s guidance on the sidelines. Family Time John Jackson had us talking about our holiday nightmares. He gave an example of when he was in Rome. He was busting to go to the toilet but he was not allowed to go to the toilet on board while the train was in the station. He made a quick break for it trying to find the toilets at the sta- tion. Having finally found one he had the unfortunate situation of some fellow taking an interest in him while he was at the urinal. John “froze.” Finally the fellow left and John was able to get the job done and then he made his back to the train with just 30 secs to go!! Thank You to Margaret, Alison, Tina, Ed, Kel and Tom for helping the Red Cross out with their Teddy Bear Picnic BBQ on Sunday. Remember if you want to take your grandchildren out to this function it goes from 10 -2pm at the Brocas located at 111 Woodville Road, St Clair.
