Antiquarianism: a Reinterpretation Antiquarianism, the Early Modern
Antiquarianism: A Reinterpretation Kelsey Jackson Williams Accepted for publication in Erudition and the Republic of Letters, published by Brill. Antiquarianism, the early modern study of the past, occupies a central role in modern studies of humanist and post-humanist scholarship. Its relationship to modern disciplines such as archaeology is widely acknowledged, and at least some antiquaries--such as John Aubrey, William Camden, and William Dugdale--are well-known to Anglophone historians. But what was antiquarianism and how can twenty-first century scholars begin to make sense of it? To answer these questions, the article begins with a survey of recent scholarship, outlining how our understanding of antiquarianism has developed since the ground-breaking work of Arnaldo Momigliano in the mid-twentieth century. It then explores the definition and scope of antiquarian practice through close attention to contemporaneous accounts and actors’ categories before turning to three case-studies of antiquaries in Denmark, Scotland, and England. By way of conclusion, it develops a series of propositions for reassessing our understanding of antiquarianism. It reaffirms antiquarianism’s central role in the learned culture of the early modern world; and offers suggestions for avenues which might be taken in future research on the discipline. Antiquarianism: The State of the Field The days when antiquarianism could be dismissed as ‘a pedantic love of detail, with an indifference to the result’ have long since passed; their death-knell was rung by Arnaldo Momigliano in his pioneering 1950 ‘Ancient History and the Antiquarian’.1 Momigliano 1 asked three simple questions: What were the origins of antiquarianism? What role did it play in the eighteenth-century ‘reform of historical method’? Why did the distinction between antiquarianism and history collapse in the nineteenth century? The answers he gave continue to underpin the study of the discipline today. -

Tech Notes, Fall 2006 Care and use of 19th-century American gilded picture frames Hugh Glover icture frames are a component of most art collections and are subject to wear and tear in their functional role surrounding paint- P ings. Damage to frames occurs during exhibition, storage, and travel, and is caused by handling, hanging processes, adverse environments, neglect, and irreversible restorations. Picture frames are maintained by a variety of preservation specialist and their preservation interests have only rarely been addressed. The following is Section 4 of a larger paper, “A Description of 19th- Century American Gilded Picture Frames and an Outline of their Modern Use and Conservation,” presented in June to the Wooden Artifact Group at the 2006 annual meeting of AIC in Providence, Rhode Island. This sec- tion addresses general preservation, handling and preparation of frames for exhibition. Environment Gilded wood objects are ultra sensitive to environmental conditions and are probably more sensitive than most paintings. Gilded wood in adverse climates experiences detachment and loss of gilding/or- nament, while the accumulation of grime leads to surface darkening and cleaning campaigns that may well cause damage. The protected bright gilding that survives on shadow boxed frames of the second half-century illustrates how more exposed gilding has now been altered by grime, abrasion, and staining from moisture and grease during handling. Handling All gilded objects should be handled with non-marring gloves to avoid abrasions and staining, and even paper towels or cotton cloth will suffice. In practice, however, gilded frames are still handled with bare hands as the frame is considered a safe means of handling the artwork. -

Direct Care of Collections Ethics, Guidelines and Recommendations March 2019 Update Direct Care of Collections: Ethics, Guidance and Recommendations March 2019 For 25 years the Code of Ethics for Museums and accounting standards have been out of alignment regarding the use of proceeds from the sale of deaccessioned collections. The Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) updated its standard to bring the two into alignment: allowing for direct care as well as acquisition. The ethical principles regarding responsible governance and collections stewardship have not changed. In light of the updated FASB standard noted below, however, a museum should revise its collections management policy, as needed, to disclose its use of proceeds and its definition of direct care (if allowed). These disclosures are additions to the recommendations for Creating an Institutional Policy on page 8. The decision-making tools (pages 9-11) remain relevant guidelines for a museum to define “direct care of collections” depending on its mission, discipline and specific circumstances. Accounting Standards Update The Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) updated Topic 958, Definition of Collections (previously addressed in FASB 116) in March 2019. The update was made to align it with AAM’s Code of Ethics for Museums regarding the use of proceeds from the sale of deaccessioned objects. The updated standard permits museums not to recognize as revenue, nor capitalize, “contributions of works of art, historical treasures, and similar assets” if the donated items meet all of the following criteria: “a. They are held for public exhibition, education, or research in furtherance of public service rather than financial gain. -

Introduction
Introduction Few Western thinkers have engaged with Indigenous people more closely or reaped greater rewards from that engagement than Franz Boas, the founder of modern anthropology. In the early twentieth century, as the world’s self- declared advanced nations competed to colonize the globe and exploit its natural resources, Boas drew upon what he had learned among Native peoples to present an alternative approach to modernity. Questioning the assumption that the West could claim the prerogative to rule “the rest” by right of natural endowment, Boas critiqued the idea of race, the master concept of colo- nialism. He shaped the modern notion of culture as an interactive process to which each of the world’s peoples has contributed its portion of knowledge. And he framed the idea of grammar as a universal characteristic of human cognition, the borderless ability to structure linguistic meaning. Abstract Title of Thesis: RACE ACROSS BORDERS: RACE AND TRANSNATIONALISM IN THE FIRST SYRIAN-AMERICAN COMMUNITY, 1890-1930 Zeinab Emad Abrahim, Master of Arts, 2013 Thesis Directed By: Professor, Madeline Zilfi Department of History This research explores the transnational nature of the citizenship campaign amongst the first Syrian Americans, by analyzing the communication between Syrians in the United States with Syrians in the Middle East, primarily Jurji Zaydan, a Middle-Eastern anthropologist and literary figure. The goal is to demonstrate that while Syrian Americans negotiated their racial identity in the United States in order to attain the right to naturalize, they did so within a transnational framework. Placing the Syrian citizenship struggle in a larger context brings to light many issues regarding national and racial identity in both the United States and the Middle East during the turn of the twentieth century.
