Celebrating the Part of our Algonquin Past, Present and Future

Saturday, May 10, 2014 Centennial Park, 18 Park Drive, Petawawa, ON 7 a.m. – 5 p.m.

On Saturday, May 10, 2014, join the Algonquins of Ontario (AOO) and the organizers of Hell or High Water 6 in our celebration of the Petawawa River. This mighty river runs through the heart of Algonquin Traditional Territory and is a major tributary of the Kichisippi (). Since time immemorial, its thundering rapids have been a source of spiritual strength and inspiration to the Algonquin people and it is home to many Algonquin cultural and heritage resources.

The largest whitewater event in and among the largest in the world, Hell or High Water 6 offers something to see and do for the entire family. The wide-range of activities include a film festival, voyageur rides, whitewater races, dragonboat races, stand up paddle races and a dinner, awards and social on Saturday evening.

As part of the Hell or High Water 6 festivities, the Algonquins of Ontario will be hosting a series of events highlighting the critical importance of the Petawawa River to both the Algonquin people and our neighbours. This walk will be a leisurely 2 kilometre guided trip along the Millennium Trail, a flat, paved walkway following the Petawawa River. There will be many stops along the Trail to allow participants to explore the local landscape and learn about its natural history, with a focus on the Algonquin cultural relationship to the Petawawa River and traditional Aboriginal life-ways. The highlight of the walk is to stand in awe, suspended over the largest set of rapids on the Lower Petawawa River.
