Logical reasoning is the surest way to overcome the unknown. The best aid to reasoning effectively is having the knowledge and an understanding of the things that have previ- ously been determined or discovered by others. Having an understanding of the reasons things are the way they are and how they got that way can help an individual to utilize his or her resources more effectively. I want my students to realize that changes that have taken place on the earth in the past have had an effect on them. Why are some towns in Indiana subject to flooding, whereas others are not? Why are cemeteries built on old beach fronts in Northwest Indiana? Why would it be easier to dig a basement in Valparaiso than in Bloomington? These things are a direct result of the glaciers that advanced southward over Indiana during the last Ice Age. The history of the land upon which we live is fascinating. Why are there large granite boulders nested in some of the fields of northern Indiana since Indiana has no granite bedrock? They are known as glacial erratics, or dropstones, and were formed in Canada or the upper Midwest hundreds of millions of years ago. -

These premises have been erected by the undersigned at an enormous expense, having been fitted up with all modern improvements, as well as for the receiving and delivering of goods of all descriptions, teams being able to pass through the building and discharge their loads or be loaded in the building by the aid of machinery. ... access from Sussex, St. Paul (now Besserer), & Rideau Streets. It was decided to increase the force now at work on the road so as to have twenty-two miles graded before the 1st of January 1873m from the Province line westward to Alexandria. Our citizens may now look to the early completion of the road, now that the directors are pushing forward its construction with such commendable energy. -

INTRODUCTION 76 2.6 Settlement Along the Ottawa River In spite of the 360‐metre drop of the Ottawa Figure 2.27 “The Great Kettle”, between its headwaters and its mouth, the river has Chaudiere Falls been a highway for human habitation for thousands of years. First Nations Peoples have lived and traded along the Ottawa for over 8000 years. In the 1600s, the fur trade sowed the seeds for European settlement along the river with its trading posts stationed between Montreal and Lake Temiskaming. Initially, French and British government policies discouraged settlement in the river valley and focused instead on the lucrative fur trade. As a result, settlement did not occur in earnest until the th th late 18 and 19 centuries. The arrival of Philemon Source: Archives Ontario of Wright to the Chaudiere Falls and the new British trend of importing settlers from the British Isles marked the beginning of the settlement era. Farming, forestry and canal building complemented each other and drew thousands of immigrants with the promise of a living wage. During this period, Irish, French Canadians and Scots arrived in the greatest numbers and had the most significant impact on the identity of the Ottawa Valley, reflected in local dialects and folk music and dancing. Settlement of the river valley has always been more intensive in its lower stretches, with little or no settlement upstream of Lake Temiskaming. As the fur trade gave way to farming, settlers cleared land and encroached on First Nations territory. To supplement meagre agricultural earnings, farmers turned to the lumber industry that fuelled the regional economy and attracted new waves of settlers. -

A hydrologic budget approach was used to assess precipitation, streamflow, baseflow, and potential and actual evapotranspiration in seven major basins in the study area on a monthly, annual and long-term basis. The report is intended to provide basic information that can be used for the wise management of the groundwater resources in the study area. Toronto, July 2002. North Bay-Mattawa Source Protection Area –Assessment Report as approved Feb 10, 2015 8.0 South River 8.1 Introduction and Summary of Findings This section includes analyses of vulnerability with respect to both water quantity and water quality for the surface water intake for the Village of South River. General methodology for water quality vulnerability assessments for surface water systems is provided in Section 3.1 of this report. Technical work supporting this section was completed during two studies, which are available online at www.nbmca.on.ca under the Drinking Water Source Protection tab or www.actforcleanwater.ca or directly from the North Bay-Mattawa Conservation Authority: WESA, 2009: Drinking Water Source Protection Studies for the Village of South River: Surface Water Vulnerability Study, Threats Inventory and Issues Evaluation, Water Quality Risk Assessment. A technical advisory committee oversaw the technical aspects of the report and local knowledge was solicited from the community at large at two public meetings. Study findings were presented to the public and comments received. Peer review was conducted during the first study by WESA, and it was determined that additional flow data was required to verify the designation of the intake type. -

NOBLE (Accepted April 12th, 1968) "Vision Pits", Cairns and Petroglyphs at Rock Lake, Algonquin Provincial Park, Ontario INTRODUCTION This report represents an account of a series of pits, cairns and petroglyphs excavated, mapped and documented at Rock Lake, Algonquin Park, during August 15 to September 6, 1962. The work, directed by the author with the capable assistance of Mr. John M. Young, was carried out for Dr. J. Norman Emerson of the Department of Anthropology, University of Toronto, on a research grant supplied by the Canada Council. The site has been known ever since the late summer of 1939 when Dr. Emerson received his introductory experiences in Ontario archaeology at Rock Lake under Mr. Kenneth E. Kidd (1948). At that time Mr. Kidd's three- man party excavated over 600 square feet of the late prehistoric campsite on the sandy beach at the extreme north end of Rock Lake (Fig. 1 ) . During the 1939 excavation, Dr. Emerson had occasion to cross the north end of the lake to examine the west shore near the entrance of the Madawaska River draining from Whitefish Lake to the north. At a short distance south of this entrance he located a series of stonelined pits heavily camouflaged by underbrush and tree cover. Those pits readily visible, he subsequently mapped with a transit and a system of marker flags. The 1939 party emerged from Rock Lake to find World War II underway, and no further work was done in this area until 1962. In July, 1962, Dr.
