  • Arthur's Way Heritage Trail
HERITAGE TRAIL Arthur’s Way is a heritage trail across northeast County Kildare that follows in the footsteps of Arthur Guinness. In just 16 km, it links many of the historic sites associated with Ireland’s most famous brewers – the Guinness family. Visitors are invited to explore Celbridge - where Arthur spent his childhood, Leixlip - the site of his first brewery and Oughterard graveyard - Arthur’s final resting place near his ancestral home. The trail rises gently from the confluence of the Liffey and Rye rivers at Leixlip to the Palladian Castletown House estate and onto Celbridge. It then departs the Liffey Valley to join the Grand Canal at Hazelhatch. The grassy towpaths guide visitors past beautiful flora and fauna and the enchanting Lyons Estate. At Ardclough, the route finally turns for Oughterard which offers spectacular views over Kildare, Dublin and the Province of Leinster. R o yaal l C a MAAYNOOTHYNOOTH nnala l R . Its focus is on the ways in which services are to be developed and delivered, and it will be supplemented by detailed annual business plans, budgets and sets of performance indicators. As well as guiding the authorities, it will make local government more transparent, relevant and accountable by offering citizens an opportunity to assess the level of service given by local councils and encourage active citizenship. The delivery of local authority services takes place in a complex and ever changing environment. Local authorities are political organisations with legally defined structures. They are funded from multiple sources, they operate within a legislative framework and are subject to guidelines and policies that are determined at European, national, regional and local level.

FOR SALE BY TENDER STRAFFAN LODGE STRAFFAN, CO. KILDARE STRAFFAN LODGE STRAFFAN, CO. KILDARE A unique property with charming Georgian residence on c. 33.48 acres (13.54 ha) of mature timbered setting with total privacy, situated in the quaint village of Straffan. Straffan is strategically located between the M7 and M4 about 30km from Dublin City, 37km Airport, 15km Naas, 5km Celbridge on the River Liffey. The property is opposite the famous K Club Hotel and Country Club and 30 mins drive to Dublin City Centre and Dublin Airport. DESCRIPTION: Straffan Lodge which comprises c. 5,000 sq.ft. of bright spacious living accommodation, plus guest annexe 1,340 sq ft. is in a wonderful mature timbered setting on the edge of the Village. Originally dating from the 1700’s, it is believed that the front section dates from the 1820s. A family called Whitelaw lived there until 1909 when it was bought by Francis Bacon’s father. Bacon spent much of his childhood there until he moved out after a row with his father in 1926 and went on to become one of the Internationally most sought after 20th Century painters, during his own lifetime. The Bacon Family sold it in 1932 to a well known surgeon Dr. Cahill. Straffan Lodge was then sold to Robert Guinness in 1968 and the vendors bought it in 1989. Straffan Lodge is likely to have been part of Straffan House Demesne (K Club) owned by the Barton Family of Barton & Guestier wine fame. Approached through recessed electric gates the avenue meanders through the post and railed paddocks, sheltered by mature timber, ensuring complete privacy, peace and tranquillity.

  • Press Statement New Barrow Water Supply for Kildare
Press Statement New Barrow Water Supply for Kildare Kildare County Council is pleased to announce that the new Barrow water supply will come into production with effect from mid-July 2013. This project has been at planning and construction for many years, the Water Abstraction Order having been formally made back in 2005. The final out-turn costs of the abstraction plant as well as the two associated pipeline contracts are likely to be in the region of €45m. Certainly, this is a major economic boost for the south of the county particularly in terms of economic activity and associated job creation. When fully operational, and allowing for future growth in demand, it is expected that production at the plant will be 31 million litres per day (i.e. 31 megalitres), 7 of which are earmarked for Athy to be distributed through the new Ardscull reservoir, while the remainder will be pumped to the Old Kilcullen Reservoir in order to provide a new water supply to the central parts of County Kildare. The new Barrow supply is indeed very timely in light of serious constraints which are now emerging in the Greater Dublin Area. Currently demand and supply is very finely balanced resulting in the risk of shortages during prolonged dry spells or in the case of production difficulties as recently experienced with the Vartry Scheme. Imminent upgrades in relation to both the Ballymore Eustace and Leixlip plants will boost regional production and this will relieve some of the pressure in the short-term. However, in light of increased demand, mainly arising from population growth, these pressures are likely to continue until a new major regional source comes on stream in 2021/22.
