WHEREAS, Lt Deranian joined the Army National Guard, October 1969; and

WHEREAS, Lt Deranian graduated from the University of California, Santa Barbara California November 1969; and

WHEREAS, Lt Deranian attended Army Basic and Advanced Training, Fort Ord, California, completed training July 1970; and

WHEREAS, Lt Deranian joined the Police Department, February 22"d, 1972; and

WHEREAS, Lt Deranian was assigned to Van Nuys Patrol Division, July 1972; and

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that by the adoption of this resolution the , along with Mayor, City Attorney and the City Controller do hereby commend Lieutenant 1 Roger C. Deranian for his outstanding record, commitment to excellence and devotion to duty. We extend our congratulations and best wishes on his retirement from the Los Angeles Police Department.

WHEREAS, Ringo Starr, has received a star on the World Famous Hollywood Walk of Fame on Monday, February 8, 201 0; and

WHEREAS, Ringo Starr, born Richard Starkey in , England signed a recording contract with EMI's Parlophone Label in 1962. Since the beginning his career with in the 1960's Ringo has been one of the world's brightest musical luminaries, enjoying a successful and dynamic solo career as a singer, songwriter and drummer, an active musical collaborator and as an actor; and

WHEREAS, "Ultimately what's most impressive about Ringo Starr isn't what he's been, but rather who he is," wrote rock critic David Wild. "The man's great heart and soul, his wit and wisdom." Ironically, the story of Ringo's evolution from former Beatie to successful solo artist is still best told from the beginning; and

WHEREAS, "When I was 13 years, I only wanted to be a drummer", remembers Ringo, and four years later at age seventeen, joined the Eddie Clayton Skiffle Band. In 1959, Ringo hooked up with the Raving Texans, which later became and the Hurricanes. In 1962, while playing a summer gig with Rory, Ringo was asked to join the Beatles. Worried that he might cost his band mates the summer gig if he left, Ringo delayed his departure until after they found themselves a replacement, and on August 18, 1962, Ringo officially became a Beatie; and

WHEREAS, As everyone knows, the Beatles went on to become the world's most popular band, but it wasn't until that chapter of Ringo's life was ending that his transcendence to the beloved artist he is today- was just beginning; and

WHEREAS, In 1970, Ringo released his first solo record, entitled Sentimental Journey, which was exactly that- a sentimental record capturing the music he grew up with (he later said "I did it for my Mum"). The Following year Ringo released Beacoups of Blues, a country and western album that he recorded with Pete Drake in Nashville in just 2 days. That same year, the Beatles broke up; and

WHEREAS, In 1971 Ringo began his unprecedented run as the first solo Beatie to score 7 consecutive Top 10 singles starting with the release of It Don't Come Easy, with B side of Early 1970. His second hit single, Back Off Boogaloo!Biindman followed in 1972, and was written with and inspired by T Rex front man Marc Bolan; and

Whereas, In 1973, Ringo released his self titled smash hit Ringo, which yielded 3 Top 10 singles, including the number one hits, Photograph/Down and Out, and You're Sixteen/Devil Woman. Ringo also marked the first time since the breakup that all the Beatles participated in the same project, though not at the same time; and

WHEREAS, In 1981 Starr recorded Stop and Smell the Roses, his most critically Old Wave in 1983 where he teamed up with producer . Ringo's greatest hits collection; Starr Struck- Best Starr Vol. 2- was released in 1989; and

WHEREAS, The 90's saw Starr release some of the best records of his career, and he also found consistent. ~~~~::=== live act with his revolving All Starr Band. The concept for the All Starr Band was first presented in 1989. "I got a m a guy named David Fishof asking if I'd be interested in putting a band together. I had been thinking the same thing - so I went through my phone book rang up a few friends and asked them if they'd like to have fun in the summer" Those friends included: Eagle, Joe Walsh; E-Streeters, Clarence Clemmons and Mils Lofgren; former Band members Rick Danko and Levon Helm; Dr. John, Billy Preston and Jim Keltner; and

WHEREAS, The tour met with great success and yielded Ringo's first live album, released on in 1990 titled simply, Ringo and His All Starr Band. "I've said this over and over again, but I love being in a band", says Ringo; and

WHEREAS, In 1992 Ringo released Time Takes Time and the and the New York Times hailed it as "Starr's best: more consistently pleasing than Ringo, it shows him as an assured performer and songwriter.: Later that same year Ringo put together his second All Starr Band which featured Burton Cumming, Dave Edmunds, Nils Lofgren, Todd Rundgren, Timothy B. Schmidt, Zak Starkey, and Joe Walsh. This line up also featured Ringo's son Zak, who joined him on drums, and was the first time Ringo, had toured Europe since the Beatles. The 2"' All Starr Band also yielded the release; Ringo Starr and His All Starr Band - Live from Montreaux. Whereas, Beverly A. Jones, Executive Administrative Assistant in the Office of the Controller is retiring after 36 years of City Service; and

Whereas, Beverly A. Jones began her City career in the Department of Traffic in 1974 as a Clerk Typist, was promoted to a Senior Clerk Typist, Accounting Clerk, and Secretary · within the Department of Recreation & Parks before promoting to her current position in the Office of the Controller as an Executive Administrative Assistant in 1999; and

Whereas, Beverly A. Jones has had the privilege to serve under three different City Controllers including , Laura Chick who was the first female ever elected to city-wide office, and the current City Controller Wendy Greuel; and

Whereas, Beverly A. Jones received commendation from her department for her actions in support of the departments' response to the 1995 Northridge Earthquake; and

Whereas, Beverly A. Jones is an active member of the choir and serves on the Board of Trustee at her church Mt. Sinai Missionary Baptist Church, Los Angeles; and

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that by the adoption of this resolution, the Council of the City of Los Angeles joins with the Mayor, City Attorney and City Controller commend and congratulate Beverly A. Jones for her outstanding 36 years of service to the City of Los Angeles and wish her continued happiness and good health in her retirement.

Whereas, nearly 30,000 people in the City of Los Angeles have been diagnosed with AIDS since the beginning of the pandemic; and

Whereas, the HIV Disease, at the opening of this 2"d decade of the 21" century, remains a chronic, life-threatening and life-altering condition for which there is neither cure, nor vaccine, nor treatment without eventual major debilitating side effects, with no prognosis other than a unavoidable & persistent erosion ofwellness and acceleration of the aging . process; and

Whereas, Persons with AIDS, according to the 1983 Denver AIDS Principles, must be listened to as expert voices participating in all public health policy dialogues about our lives & deaths and our disease; and

Whereas, members of the "LA City grassroots Elder HIV I AIDS advocacy summit & new media training" have gathered together in these chambers and in the Tom Bradley Conference Center today to train themselves & prepare for more effective HIVIAIDS advocacy at the Los Angeles grassroots level, focusing on the need for prevention, research, data and medical understanding of the impact HIV I AIDS on the aging process; and

Whereas, the City of Los Angeles values the partnership, courage and contributions of people with HIV over 50 years old, not only as an at-risk population but also as a resource community--- as citizens, as heroes, as inspirations, as HIVI AIDS watchdogs, as C). .
