4. Electrical connections 4.1. General instructions • It is forbid den to plug or unplug termi nals with volta ge applied. • Attach input and output wires to termi nals only without volta ges applied. • Cords must be pro vided with sleeves. • Atten ti on must be paid that the power supply volta ge applied will agree with the vol tage noti ced at the name plate. • The instru ment has no power- on switch, so it will be in opera tion as soon as the po wer is con nec ted.

4.2. Hints against noisy environment All inputs and outputs are pro tected against noisy envi ron ment and high volta ge spikes. Ne vert he less the lo ca ti on should be se lec ted to en su re that no ca pa ci ti ve or in duc ti ve in ter fe rence can have an ef fect on the in stru ment or con nec tion li nes.

It is adv isable: • To use shiel ded cables. • The wiring of shields and groung (0V) should be star- sha ped. • The distan ce to inter fe rence sour ces should be as far as pos si ble. If ne cessa ry, pro tec ti ve scre en or me tal en clo su res must be pro vi ded. • Coils of relays must be supplied with filters. • Paral lel wiring of input signals and AC power li nes should be avoi- ded. • The par allel output lines must be as short as pos si ble. • It is necessa ry to use shielded twisted pair cable for the RS422-li nes as well as for the SSI si gnal lines.

ERMA-Electronic GmbH 6 5. Function

5. Function The functio nal struc ture of the conver ter is shown in figu re 2. There are two input chan nels pro vi ded. The in put fre quen cies come to a dou bling sta ge. At ten ti on must be paid, that the pulse width high to low is about 50% (180° or 1/2 cycle). If both input chan nels are used the se cond in put pulse must have 90° degrees out of phase.

When input frequen cies have pas sed the doubling stages the output frequen cies of the doubling stages are ad ded. By this way input frequen cies can be qua dru pled. The qua dru pled fre quen cy co mes to a fre quen cy di vi der. The fre quen cy di vi der is pro grammable. Program ming is done by an inter nal 8-po le DIP-switch. With the aid of the DIP- switch input frequen cy can be divi ded by values from 1 to 255. The output pulses of the frequen cy divi der gets to the fre quency to analog con verter. The fre quen cy to ana log con ver ter ge ne ra tes a vol ta ge which is pro por tio nal to the output frequen cy of the fre quency divi der. The output volta ge of the fre quency to ana- log con verter is con trolling a volta ge to current conver ter.

The frequen cy to analog con ver ter is con fi gu ra ted in this way that an input fre- 1 Channel A quency of 500 Hz is gene - F IN1 ra ting an output Voltage of 2 20 mA. If the input frequen - Channel B F IN2 cies at both input channels 3 are 25 kHz (=100 kHz at the GND input of the con verter) and the user wants an output volta ge of 20 mA, the fre- Frequency quency divi der must be pro- Divider grammed with the value 100. 7 + The output volta ge is iso la- Frequency ted from the input channels To 0...10 VDC as well as from the power Analog Converter 9 supp ly. - 4 + 18 ...36 VDC 5 Power Supply -

6. Jumper and DIP-switch configuration With the aid of the DIP-switch input frequen cy can be divi ded by 1 ... 255. The DIP-switch is lo ca ted inter nal. For the confi gu ra tion of the DIP- switch the device must be opened. To open the Housing of the FA9002 only a small screwdri ver is needed. With the screwd ri - ver the two little flat links betwe en the top and the base of the housing have to be pressed inwardly on both si- des. When the flat links were pressed, the top can be se para ted from the base. Now, the PCB can be pul led out toge ther with the top of the housing. Look for the pos si ble DIP switch settings in the il lustra tion on the bottom of this page. To put the housing toge ther again just push the top with the PCB insi de the base until the flat links snap in on both si des.

ERMA-Electronic GmbH 8 6. Jumper and DIP-switch configuration

6.1. Jumper settings for input voltage level and analog output The FA9002 can be adju sted to the input volta ge level. It is also possi ble to select the ran ge of the analog output. All possi ble jumper settings are shown in the pictu re be - low.

6.2. DIP-switch settings for dividing factor The in ter nal frequen cy to analog con verter is opti mi zed for an input frequen cy of 500 Hz. 500 Hz at the input of the inter nal con verter means 20 mA at the ex ternal output

DIP Switches 1-8 1

termi nals 7 and 9. The exter nal applied frequen cies at the termi nals 1, 3 respec tive ly 2, 3 are dupli ca - ted. If only one input channel is used the inter nal frequen cy is two times of the ex ter- nal applied frequen cy. If both chan nels are used, the inter nal frequen cy is four ti mes of the ex ternal applied freqen cy. For a distinct assignment betwe en the applied frequen cy and the desi red output vol- tage the frequen cy divi der must be adju sted in the correct manner. The DIP-swit ches ares bina ry coded as shown in table 1.

Formu la to calcula te the div iding factor (one input) D = 2 x Fin / 1 kHz Ex amp le 1 If one input channel is used and the applied frequen cy range is 0 to 15 kHz and the output volta ge at 15 kHz shall be 20 mA, the divi der “D” must be ad justed as shown:

9 ERMA-Electronic GmbH 6. Jumper and DIP-switch configuration

D = 2 x Fin / 1kHz = 2 x 15kHz / 1kHz = 30

Formu la to calcula te the div iding factor (two inputs) D = 4 x Fin / 1 kHz Ex amp le 2 If both input channels are used and the applied frequen cy range is 0 to 750 Hz and the output volta ge at 750 Hz shall be 20 mA, the divi der “D” must be ad justed as shown:

D = 4 x Fin / 1kHz = 4 x 750 Hz / 1kHz = 3

DIP switch settings for examp le 1 To adjust the calcula ted divi der value se veral switches must be com bined. The divi - der value of 30 can be reali zed by adding the values:

16 + 8 + 4 + 2 = 30

That means: in order to reali ze the divi der value of 30 the DIP-swit ches 5, 4, 3, and 2 must be switched on. DIP switch settings for examp le 2 The divi der value of 3 can be reali zed by adding the values:

2 + 1 = 3

In that case the DIP-swit ches 2 and 1 must be switched on. Table 1 DIP-switch number Value of the switch 1 1 2 2 3 4 4 8 5 16 6 32 7 64 8 128

8. Startup Procedure Atten ti on must be paid that power supply volta ge applied will agree with the volta ge noti ced at the name plate. When de li vered, the in tru ment is ad ju sted with a stan dard con fi gu ra ti on (de fault va- lue of the divi der = 1). By changing the adjust ment the custo mer can al ter the stan- dard con fi gu ra ti on ac cor ding to his mea su ring task.

At ten ti on ! When the instru ment is built in a machi ne and the custo mer wants to change the con figu ra tion, atten ti on must be paid, that no dama ge will occur to the ma chi ne!

9. Handling of misfunctions All devi ces of ERMA- E lectro nic GmbH are tested for perfect func tion during pro duc - tion as well as when deli vered. Nevert he less it is pos si ble that a device won’t work. That is not all ways a reason by the new device. There are many small reasons that will result in misfunc ti ons. If the FA 9002/S01 won’t work pro perly, please check the fol lo wing points.

• Look for pro per supply volta ge • Look for pro per wi ring of supply • Look for pro per con fi gu ra ti on of the di vi der va lue • Look if high volta ge spikes are exi sting and have an influ ence to the device. If all tests are all right, the device must be send back for contro ling.
