Introduction: Gendering Yao Ritual Tradition This research presents a number of Yao perspectives, especially those embodied in their ritual tradition, in their historical experiences of encountering the others; above all, a powerful Other, the successive Chinese imperial states. 1 Nowadays the Yao are one of the fifty-six nationalities officially recognized by the communist Chinese state since the 1950s. The majority of their population lives in the mountainous areas of South China.2 As are many ritual traditions of non-Han Chinese people in South China, Yao ritual tradition has been regarded as a hybrid tradition composed of many Daoist, Buddhist, even Confucian ritual and cultural elements, that have become intermingled with indigenous beliefs and practices.1 Since the 1980s, their highly Daoism-laden ordination ceremony and their ritual manuscripts written in Chinese have often been singled out to use to support scholarly discussions about Yao sinification.3 The imperial Chinese state expansion into South China that began in the Song (960-1279 AD) has been argued to have been the major facilitating force in the Yao’s conversion to Daoism and their subsequent sinification. 4 In this sense, the Daoist-imperial religious and ritual heritage can be considered to have been a ‘civilizing project’ whose aim was to bring the Yao closer to the centre of Chinese state civilization. 5 The goal of this research is to make the discourse of Yao 1 In this research, I use the capitalized Other to specifically refer to the Chinese imperial states. 2 Yao are also resident in some Southeast Asian countries and in American and European countries. By ‘civilizing project’, Harrell means ‘a kind of interaction between people, in which one group, the civilizing center, interacts with other groups (the peripheral peoples) in terms of a particular kind of inequality’, as ‘inequality’ refers 9 sinification initially more abstruse but eventually more unambiguous by adding a gender dimension to the understanding of Yao ritual tradition. Yao Daoist ordination is a ceremony whose performance bestows the qualification of a ritual specialist on a Yao man. There is no equivalent ordination ceremony specifically held for Yao women. Women can only participate in the ordination in which their husbands are the participant ordinands. By undergoing ordination, a Yao man is entitled not only to the privilege of assuming the role of a ritual specialist, he is also able to access both the repertoire of Yao ritual knowledge and Chinese literacy. In other words, Yao men are born with the right to gain access to the ritual world and are also encouraged to acquire Chinese literacy. However, the privileges accruing from ordination can be conferred on women only through marriage and they are not granted accessibility to either the ritual repertoire or Chinese literacy. This palpable gender difference in the Yao people’s experience of ‘being sinicised’ and its social consequences is an issue that has rarely been touched upon in previous discussions of Yao religion. The gendering of Yao ritual tradition elucidates the ways in which the specific gender ideologies are articulated and how male-female relationships are formed in the Yao religious domain. Moreover, it reveals why these are significant to the enrichment of our understanding of the historical experiences the Yao have undergone in their encounter with imperial Chinese state incorporation. Cogently, the research also highlights the positions of women in the Yao ritual tradition and their importance to the Yao’s reactions to their incorporation into the dominant imperial Chinese state and the subsequent Han-Chinese cultural intervention.

A critical ethnography was adopted to understand the interplay of lived experiences, identities, and policies (specifically related to retirement, aging, and immigration). Extended observations and in-depth semi-structured interviews with 18 older people, 6 adult children, and 13 community stakeholders identified the structural barriers that impinged on everyday experiences of aging within the Filipino Canadian diaspora living in Montreal. Several themes emerged including (1) the disjuncture between discourses on immigration and migration and the ways in which older racialized newcomers are welcomed into Canadian society, (2) the intersections between immigration and retirement policies and their impact on older Filipina women engaged in domestic work, and (3) the ways in which Filipino older adults provide and receive care in intergenerational and transnational settings in response to the paucity and scarcity of formal resources. The findings of this study offer new knowledge about the impact of immigration and labour policies on the lived experiences of aging and care practices among older members of racialized and immigrant communities in the Global North generally, and within Filipino communities in Canada specifically.

    The 14th National and International Conference "Global Goals, Local Actions: Looking Back and Moving Forward 2021" 18 August, 2021 When Tradition Meets Modernity — The Contemporary Changes of the "Sanyuesan" Festival of She Ethnic Group in Jingning, Zhejiang Province Yang Wang Abstract This study discusses the contemporary changes of the "Sanyuesan" festival of the She ethnic group in Jingning by collecting relevant literature and conducting field investigation. Qualitative analysis is mainly carried out with participatory observation and in-depth interview as research tools. This paper mainly summarizes the change track and characteristics of the She's "Sanyuesan" festival. This study mainly explores the changes of the times of the She People's "Sanyuesan" festival from the aspects of connotation and function, form and content, subject composition of participation and cultural space. The research results are helpful to explore the historical context and cultural space of the contemporary construction of She's "Sanyuesan" festival music. Keywords: She ethnic group, Sanyuesan, Festival celebration, Change Introduction The She ethnic group is an ancient minority in Southeast China, and it is also a typical group scattered across the region. In the long process of history, unafraid of hardships and dangers, She people have created a splendid history and culture with their own diligence and wisdom, leaving a rich cultural heritage. As the second batch of national intangible cultural heritage, their "Sanyuesan" (Category: folk custom; No.: Ⅹ - 73) is emitting a bright and unique brilliance with its distinctive ethnic temperament, rich cultural meaning and active form of expression. Jingning, located in East China, is the only She Autonomous County in China.

Once cooked, W rice was traditionally taken as food at least three times each day, first for jo chan, or early meal, either as congee or, if the weather was cool, cooked and served with a spoonful of liquid lard, soy sauce, and an egg. To eat rice is to sik fan, o and there is, in addition to those morning preparations, n’fan, or “afternoon rice,” and mon fan, or “evening rice.” There is even a custom called siu yeh, which translates K literally as “cooked midnight” and means rice eaten as a late evening snack.     THE DIARY OF A MANCHU SOLDIER IN SEVENTEENTH-CENTURY CHINA The Manchu conquest of China inaugurated one of the most successful and long-living dynasties in Chinese history: the Qing (1644–1911). The wars fought by the Manchus to invade China and consolidate the power of the Qing imperial house spanned over many decades through most of the seventeenth century. This book provides the first Western translation of the diary of Dzengmeo, a young Manchu officer, and recounts the events of the War of the Three Feudatories (1673–1682), fought mostly in southwestern China and widely regarded as the most serious internal military challenge faced by the Manchus before the Taiping rebellion (1851–1864). The author’s participation in the campaign provides the close-up, emotional perspective on what it meant to be in combat, while also providing a rare window into the overall organization of the Qing army, and new data in key areas of military history such as combat, armament, logistics, rank relations, and military culture. The diary represents a fine and rare example of Manchu personal writing, and shows how critical the development of Manchu studies can be for our knowledge of China’s early modern history.
