Generations have enjoyed relaxing, fishing, hunting, and a wide range of other “Udelights over the last hundred and forty years. Gangsters just joined the millions of others who came north. Sometimes they, too, simply sought rest and relaxation at a cabin, a gangster-friendly retreat, or a resort hotel. Other times, they saw opportunities for furthering their own in- terests in gambling, bootlegging, and even kidnapping, bank robbery, and murder. -

It begins with the murder of "Diamond Jim" Colo- simo at the dawn of prohibition, and it continues on up through the years, death by death, until the killers of Gangland finally gradu- ated from murder to massacre on St. Valentine's day, 1929, and more recently hit one below the belt by assassinating Alfred "Jake" Lingle, a newspaper reporter. ^ With the country-wide publication of the massacre photograph, public indifference to Gangland's crimes came to an abrupt end. The work of destroying organized crime in Chicago began determinedly, coldly, sternly. To use a phrase borrowed from Gangland, the exponents of the "gat" and the machine gun are today being "pushed around" by fcency and Integrity, and they must surely fall into the abyss of oblivion. ^ What has brought about M uprising? More than any other single factor has been the wide and unceasing publicity given to Gangland's activities, t It was this fact that gave the authors the idea for this book. Newspaper reporters of long Chicago police experience, they realized that any book showing the criminals of Booze- !dom MS they really are would necessarily be one of brutality and blood and horror. Only in such a Book could it be done. -
Mafia and Funerals. Representations, Stereotypes and Identity
DIEGO GAVINI Mafia and Funerals. Representations, Stereotypes and Identity. The U.S. Case* Each community tends to invest its own cultural resources in the cel- ebration of its dead. In particular, this happens when those who have died assume a significant role in the collective imagination, due either to the role they played during their life, or to the circumstances that determined their death. Through public commemoration, a community is able to con- struct symbolic models to represent its own constituent elements, trace a line of continuity with past generations, or transmit particular values.1 The collective elaboration of mourning gives a meaning to loss, especially when it is least acceptable (as in the case of violent or premature death), by raising it into an integral part of its own system of myths and symbols.2 The role it plays may be internal within the community that expresses it, and/or external, in relation to outsiders to whom to address particular mes- sages. The cult of the dead not only expresses the link with the memory of the deceased, but may come to play a wider role: a means of legitimizing social groups or single individuals and of expressing the rivalry between those who aspire to assume a leading role in the community. * Translated by Peter Spring. 1. Of particular importance among the studies that have been devoted to this question: G. Mosse, Fallen Soldiers: Reshaping the Memory of the World Wars, New York 1990 and G. Schwarz, Tu mi devi seppellir. -
The Return of the 1920S: an Examination of the Twenty First Century Revival
The Return of the 1920s: An Examination of the Twenty First Century Revival Dirk Andrew Gibb A thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Cultural Studies October 2019 This research was supported by an Australian Government Research Training Program (RTP) Scholarship Statement of Originality I hereby certify that the work embodied in the thesis is my own work, conducted under normal supervision. The thesis contains no material which has been accepted, or is being examined, for the award of any other degree or diploma in any university or other tertiary institution and, to the best of my knowledge and belief, contains no material previously published or written by another person, except where due reference has been made. I give consent to the final version of my thesis being made available worldwide when deposited in the University’s Digital Repository, subject to the provisions of the Copyright Act 1968 and any approved embargo. Dirk Gibb ii Abstract This thesis presents, frames, and analyses a corpus of films and television programs set in the 1920s, all of which have been produced in the last decade. It posits these texts as the latest in a long line of ‘returns’ to prominence of this storied decade within popular culture. It questions why such a twenty-first century resurgence of interest in the 1920s has come about, arguing that we have much to learn from these representations in seeking to grasp key origins of our ever-later modernity’s founding mass media and consumer age. In so doing, it apprehends the 1920s as a ‘protean’ decade, and this for its future-oriented energy, unfinished nature, uncontrollable generativity, diverse potential, and ongoing relevance.
