CARDINAL CAJETAN RENAISSANCE MAN William Seaver, O.P. {)T WAS A PORTENT of things to come that St. Thomas J Aquinas' principal achievement-a brilliant synthesis of faith and reason-aroused feelings of irritation and confusion in most of his contemporaries. But whatever their personal sentiments, it was altogether too imposing, too massive, to be ignored. Those committed to established ways of thought were startled by the revolutionary character of his theological entente. William of la Mare, a representa tive of the Augustinian tradition, is typical of those who instinctively attacked St. Thomas because of the novel sound of his ideas without taking time out to understand him. And the Dominicans who rushed to the ramparts to vindicate a distinguished brother were, as often as not, too busy fighting to be able even to attempt a stone by stone ex amination of the citadel they were defending. Inevitably, it has taken many centuries and many great minds to measure off the height and depth of his theological and philosophical productions-but men were ill-disposed to wait. Older loyalities, even in Thomas' own Order, yielded but slowly, if at all, and in the midst of the confusion and hesitation new minds were fashioning the via moderna. Tempier and Kilwardby's official condemnation in 1277 of philosophy's real or supposed efforts to usurp theology's function made men diffident of proving too much by sheer reason. Scotism now tended to replace demonstrative proofs with dialectical ones, and with Ockham logic and a spirit of analysis de cisively supplant metaphysics and all attempts at an organic fusion between the two disciplines. -

SEZIONI MOSTRA L’esposizione è suddivisa in tre sezioni : Prima della Spina La Spina dei Borghi Cavare la “spina” a San Pietro PRIMA DELLA SPINA Tramite sculture, affreschi, disegni, dipinti e cartografie si racconterà come questo territorio passò dall’essere marginale e inospitale ad esercitare una forte attrazione urbanistica su Roma divenendone parte integrante. Escluso dal perimetro delle mura, povero e malsano a causa dei frequenti straripamenti del Tevere, questo territorio iniziò ad esercitare una forte attrazione urbanistica su Roma solo a partire dalla prima età imperiale. A seguito di interventi di bonifica furono realizzate le prime ville suburbane le più famose delle quali appartenevano ad Agrippina e Domizia. Giardini dal ricco arredo scultoreo si alternavano a costruzioni sfruttando scenograficamente la topografia dei luoghi, vicini al fiume e prossimi ai rilievi del colle Vaticano, del Monte Santo Spirito e del Gianicolo. Lungo le due strade principali che attraversavano la zona, la via Triumphalis e la via Cornelia, si addensarono diversi monumenti funerari (tra le memorie più evidenti, oggi, il mausoleo di Adriano, la necropoli vaticana – sotto la Basilica – e quella dell’Autoparco Vaticano e di S. Rosa). Se il termine “ Vaticano ” è oggi immediatamente riconducibile a San Pietro e al cristianesimo, in età imperiale ebbe una valenza fortemente pagana : quest’area ospitò infatti un luogo di culto dedicato alla dea frigia Cibele chiamato, per l’appunto, Vaticanum o Phrygianum Vaticanum frequentato ancora fin quasi alla fine del IV sec. d.C ., in compresenza e forse in contrapposizione alla nuova fede emergente, il cristianesimo. Nel corso dell’alto medioevo, intorno alla Basilica si sviluppò una vera e propria area sacra con monasteri, diaconie, chiese: burgs era il termine con cui i pellegrini germanici definivano l’agglomerato da cui “Borgo”. -

Jadranka neralić Il ruolo delle istituzioni illiriche di Roma nella formazione della nazione croata Situata nel cuore della città di Roma vicino al mausoleo dell’impera- tore Augusto, la monumentale chiesa sistina di San Girolamo è un simbo- lo importante della nazione croata, suo centro liturgico e pastorale, luogo privilegiato di cultura religiosa per i croati residenti a Roma, per quelli in patria e per quelli dispersi nei vari continenti.1 Attorno ad essa sono sorti i suoi istituti – la confraternita che amministrò l’ospizio-ospedale (fondata da Niccolò V con la bolla Piis fdelium votis il 21 aprile 1453), l’unico ca- pitolo nazionale estero a Roma (istituito da Sisto V con la bolla Sapientiam sanctorum del 1 agosto 1589) e il collegio per la formazione del clero dio- cesano istituito da Leone XIII con la bolla Slavorum gentem del 1901, oggi conosciuto come Pontifcio Collegio Croato di San Girolamo.2 La chiesa e le sue istituzioni erano un centro per i pellegrini e per la consistente comunità a Roma, ma la vera importanza consisteva anche nell’organizza- re moltissime iniziative religiose, sociali e culturali in favore della patria. Inoltre esse davano la possibilità a molti connazionali, prevalentemente ecclesiastici, di trovare impiego come consiglieri per le questioni della Chiesa orientale nei paesi slavi, interpreti o collaboratori delle varie Con- gregazioni della Santa Sede, in particolare di quella de Propaganda Fide. 1. The Hospital and Church of the Schiavoni / Illyrian Confraternity in Early Modern Rome Jasenka Gudelj* Summary: Slavic people from South-Eastern Europe immigrated to Italy throughout the Early Modern period and organized them- selves into confraternities based on common origin and language. This article analyses the role of the images and architecture of the “national” church and hospital of the Schiavoni or Illyrian com- munity in Rome in the fashioning and management of their con- fraternity, which played a pivotal role in the self-definition of the Schiavoni in Italy and also served as an expression of papal for- eign policy in the Balkans. Schiavoni / Illyrians in Early Modern Italy and their confraternities People from the area broadly coinciding with present-day Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia, Herzegovina, and coastal Montenegro, sharing a com- mon Slavonic language and the Catholic faith, migrated in a steady flux to Italy throughout the Early Modern period.1 The reasons behind the move varied, spanning from often-quoted Ottoman conquests in the Balkans or plague epidemics and famines to the formation of merchant and diplo- matic networks, as well as ecclesiastic or other professional career moves.2 Moreover, a common form of short-term travel to Italy on the part of so- called Schiavoni or Illyrians was the pilgrimage to Loreto or Rome, while the universities of Padua and Bologna, as well as monastery schools, at- tracted Schiavoni / Illyrian students of different social extractions. The first known organized groups described as Schiavoni are mentioned in Italy from the fifteenth century. Through the Early Modern period, Schiavoni / Illyrian confraternities existed in Rome, Venice, throughout the Marche region (Ancona, Ascoli, Recanati, Camerano, Loreto) and in Udine. -

I). The monumental palace stretches for eighty ,five metres along the Western flank of the piazza from the Southern corner coward the Northern end. The exceptionally long fapde is organised into a symmetrical sequence of bays with a projecting central section and is buttressed, at the North end, by a distinct fapde with a large serliana win, dow (an arch with crabeaced sides). The exterior boasts a profusion of ornament that enlivens the surface and punctuates the horizontality of the building. Through sheer scale and abundance of form, the Palazzo Pamphilj bespeaks grandeur and authority. Architecture serves the rhetorical functions of communication and persuasion. In the early modem period (ca. 1500-1800), palaces in particular became synonymous with the statm of their owners. Today, the Palazzo Pamphilj houses the Embassy of Brazil in Rome, but until the government ofBrazil purchased the palace in 1960, it had belonged to the Pamphilj family. -
