Laney School of Graduate Studies of Emory University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in English 2010 Abstract Word of Myth: Critical Stories in Minority American Literature By Sarah Eden Schiff Since the 1960s, African American, Native American, Asian American, and Chicano/a literatures have captivated the national imagination. “Word of Myth” contends that minority authors’ pervasive use of myth has been foundational to this boom in literary production. Because it imposes order on the unknown and makes what is historically specific seem natural and timeless, myth has proven invaluable for minority authors to challenge master narratives while simultaneously reconstructing marginalized ones. Though myth is conventionally understood as a politically conservative narrative form, I argue that it can both conserve and liberate, sanction and qualify. In myth, minority writers found the means to transmit cultural values, intellectual traditions, and silenced histories while retaining an oppositional political stance. To map the ways crosscultural US literatures deploy myth, I draw on a broad spectrum of myth theory, from mid-century structuralists Carl Jung and Mircea Eliade to more recent scholars of religion and philosophy such as Paul Ricoeur and Wendy Doniger. Considering texts by contemporaneous authors across cultural divides, each chapter of my dissertation identifies formal dynamics by which US literatures of race and ethnicity forge symbolic space for alternate mythologies in order to confront the leviathan of American exceptionalism. Because myth appears in all cultures but demands cultural context to be understood, it proves to be an especially useful theoretical lens for comparative American literary studies. By making myth a central critical category, “Word of Myth” identifies literary strategies used in common by authors of disparate racial backgrounds, explains the significance of these connections in the context of national politics, and thereby revises the prevailing narrative of American literary history. Rather than a series of unconnected movements or an assortment of multicultural tokens, post-1960s US minority literature, through its emplotment of alternate origin stories, has fundamentally changed the imagination of Americans – both how we imagine and who we imagine Americans to be. This is a dissertation about people’s dreams as they have been conveyed through myth, so I hope you will indulge me. Somewhat recently, I had a dream that I was afloat in a sea of books. This may sound like a good dream, but it was actually quite foreboding. The books were thick and heavy, and all of a sudden I was no longer floating. When we’ve talked about our backgrounds in myth and storytelling, it sounds like we grew up in very similar ways” (Hoy interview 54).1 Kingston feels “an affinity” with Morrison and Silko because they all “seem to write alike” and “are living life in a more dangerous place” filled with “ceremony and memory” instead of merely postmodern textuality. Unlike those writers who are “only playing with words” (Rabinowitz interview 74), she, Morrison, and Silko evince a functional “aliveness” in their writing because they are connected to a specific “community and a tribe” (74). According to Kingston, the way that literary works spanning cultural divides can achieve political relevance is by being immersed not only in a specific place of cultural origins but also in the “dangerous place” of myth. Myth – a reputedly conservative narrative form – does more than provide a culturally specific means to make one’s writing directly impact the realm of experience. For Kingston, seeing the shared, even universal, mythic themes across cultural divides convinced her of “the connection of all people – that our myths break across all kinds of barriers” (Hornung “Discussions” 318). For this reason, she compares herself not only to the Chinese mythic heroine Fa Mu Lan in interviews (as she also does in The Woman Warrior) but also to the Pueblo mythic deity Spiderwoman (Perry interview 175, 188). Kingston’s recognition of myth as a means to ground her creative writing in a culturally 1 Silko, in turn, has come to similar conclusions; she says that Kingston and Morrison are “thinking and writing about the same sorts of things” as she is (Boos interview 143). 2 specific context to make literature politically efficacious while recognizing it as a category for crosscultural comparison inspires the questions that drive this dissertation: What role does myth play in minority American literatures, and how does myth provide a coherent and ethically responsible means to engage in comparative US literary studies? Kingston’s identification of myth as a productive tool for making her writing politically functional, for making it alive, connected and attentive to the “cultural memory” (Rabinowitz interview 74) of a specific group of people, and for simultaneously drawing cross-cultural comparisons is not unique. Whether as embedded narrative or structuring device, the persistent use of myth, especially in post-Civil Rights minority American literature, indicates myth’s invaluable role in responding

However, it was not until after the mid-nineteenth century that the Chinese became numerically significant and their society, activities, and role in this country attracted much attention. For in Germany no one laughs at vice, nor calls mutual corruption “the spirit of the age.” (Tacitus, Germania, 19) It may be tempting to use quotes such as the one above to make inferences about what life must have been like for the German women Tacitus wrote about. However, ethnographies such as the Germania are more useful in garnering information about Tacitus’ Rome than they are accurate accounts of Roman Germany. When constructing the cultural geography of the world they lived in, the Romans often defined themselves, like the Greeks before them, in contrast to a cultural “Other” or “barbarian.” This dichotomy between Roman and non-Roman, West and East, civilized and uncivilized, is a regular theme throughout Classical literature and art.

(2015) Directed by Dr. Christian Moraru. 352 pp. As a theory and political movement of the late 20th century, multiculturalism has emphasized recognition, tolerance, and the peaceful coexistence of cultures, while providing the groundwork for social justice and the expansion of the American literary canon. However, its sometimes uncomplicated celebrations of diversity and its focus on static, discrete ethnic identities have been seen by many as restrictive. As my project argues, contemporary ethnic American novelists are pushing against these restrictions by promoting what I call transethnicity, the process by which one formulates a dynamic conception of ethnicity that cuts across different categories of identity. Through the use of self-conscious or metafictional narratives, authors such as Louise Erdrich, Junot Díaz, and Percival Everett mobilize metafiction to expand definitions of ethnicity and to acknowledge those who have been left out of the multicultural picture. I further argue that, while metafiction is often considered the realm of white male novelists, ethnic American authors have galvanized self-conscious fiction—particularly stories depicting characters in the act of writing—to defy multiculturalism’s embrace of coherent, reducible ethnic groups who are best represented by their most exceptional members and by writing that is itself correct and “authentic.” Instead, under the transethnic model, ethnicity is self-conflicted, forged through ongoing revision and contestation and in ever- fluid responses to political, economic, and social changes. “NECESSARY FICTIONS”: AUTHORSHIP AND TRANSETHNIC IDENTITY IN CONTEMPORARY AMERICAN NARRATIVES by Leah A. She argues that his contribution to dialectical materialism is still important for a clarification of topical issues, and makes some comments on the vicissitudes of diamat in the USSR. It is denied that a dialectical process going on in reality could justifiably be made to fit in the chain of historical necessity. Besides Marx's more philosophical writings all his major works, especially Capital, come up for discussion.     Gerónimo Sarmiento Cruz Chapter I, 5/15 Draft — do not circulate Dear workshoppers, Thank you for taking the time to read and discuss my work. What follows is still a rough draft of the first chapter of my dissertation, provisionally titled Anational Poetics. In brief, ​ ​ by anational I mean an approach to an order of ideas, images, and concepts whose construction and inner logics are independent of the socio-historical ubiquity of the nation. Mainly relying on two concepts, Deleuze and Guattari’s minor literature and James C. Scott’s hidden transcripts, I am elaborating the anational as a hermeneutics allowing us to read against the backdrop of the nation in order to trace and constellate alternative accounts of collectivities as formulated by minority poetries and poetics. The chapter I am workshopping analyzes the work of Gloria Anzaldúa through the lens of the nation form. In relation to the anational, a lot of the work I do in this chapter is still preparatory—I begin to sketch the concept only towards the end of the chapter. I apologize for the length of the document, yet it is important for me that I workshop the entire thing so that I can assess whether the chapter-format is actually working well and conveying what I intend.     COMMON PERSPECTIVES IN POST-COLONIAL INDIAN AND AFRICAN FICTION IN ENGLISH ABSTRACT THESIS SUBMITTED FOR THE AWARD OF THE DEGREE OF Bottor of IN ENGLISH LITERATURE BY AMINA KISHORE DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH ALIGARH MUSLIIVI UNIVERSITY ALIGARH 1995 Abstract The introduction of the special paper on Commonwealth Literature at the Post Graduate level and the paper called 'Novel other than British and American' at the Under Graduate level at AMU were the two major eventualities which led to this study. In the paper offered to the M A students, the grouping together of Literatures from atleast four of the Commonwealth nations into one paper was basically a makeshift arrangement. The objectives behind the formulation of such separate area as courses for special study remained vaguely described and therefore unjustified. The teacher and students, were both uncertain as to why and how to hold the disparate units together. The study emerges out of such immediate dilemma and it hopes to clarify certain problematic concerns related to the student of the Commonwealth Literature. Most Commonwealth criticism follows either (a) a justificatory approach; or (b) a confrontationist approach; In approach (a) usually a defensive stand is taken by local critics and a supportive non-critical, indulgent stand is adopted by the Western critic. In both cases, the issue of language use, nomenclature and the event cycle of colonial history are the routes by which the argument is moved. Approach (b) invariably adopts the Post-Colonial Discourse as its norm of presenting the argument. According to this approach, the commonness of Commonwealth Literatures emerges from the fact that all these Literatures have walked ••• through the fires of enslavement and therefore are anguished, embattled units of creative expression.
