Job Title Children and Families’ Worker Location Benefice of Rural Based at Tower Room Office, St. Nicholas East York Church, Dunnington, York Context Dunnington, Stockton on the Forest, Warthill and Holtby make up the Benefice of Rural East York on the eastern side of York. With four churches and three schools it is a lively area in which to minister. Dunnington is also in a local partnership with the village Methodist Chapel. Whilst we have a lot of contact with families through parent and toddler groups, school visits and family services, there is much more we would like to do. We see a significant opportunity to grow the Church by appointing a Children and Families Worker to work with the parish priest and other members of the church community. Hours Part time – 18 hours per week. Flexible working to include some weekends and evenings. This post is funded for 3 years. Remuneration £11,520 (£24,000 reduced pro rata) 18 hours full time equivalent plus pension 5% employer contributions Reports to Revd. Nick Bird, Rector Job Purpose To strengthen and develop our work with families and children through the churches, local schools, and the local community, with opportunities for outreach, partnership, mission and ecumenical work. To build positive relationships with families and the 0-11 age group, while also being part of developing strategy for the churches’ response to the older ‘youth’ 12-18 age group. To support, encourage and equip volunteers to deliver work with children and families. Key Responsibilities To develop and co-ordinate projects focussed on children and families to serve the church and community. To develop a sustainable strategy for working with children and families. To be involved in the planning and leadership of age group specific worship for children and families. To encourage discipleship among children and families. In conjunction with the clergy and others, to be involved in the preparation and follow-up of families who come for baptism of children. To develop supportive relationships with our three local primary schools, through assemblies, school services and other activities as agreed with the Rector and Headteacher. To sustain, recruit and develop a team of volunteers to support and deliver the work. To develop links with other youth organisations in the Benefice – e.g. uniformed groups. To work in conjunction with the Parish Safeguarding Representative to ensure the safety and wellbeing of children. To participate in staff meetings and prayer meetings as agreed. To provide regular written reports for PCC meetings. To participate in relevant training and development opportunities. Members of staff are expected to maintain the highest professional standards of performance, tact, politeness and confidentiality. To undertake appropriate administration duties necessary for the job. The Person Essential: A committed Christian Passionate about seeing people develop and grow in their faith Evidence of the capability for theological reflection in working with children and families A 'people-person', good at making contacts, networking and enthusing volunteers Efficient, organised and reliable Professional experience in working with families and children To have extensive experience and a relevant qualification. Very good pastoral understanding and sensitivity, able to relate warmly to parents and children A positive team member who can work collaboratively Willing to be hands-on with the practicalities of running activities Effective communicator with both children and parents Ability to work within an agreed budget Able to work alone as well as being able to work as part of a team Can initiate new and innovative ideas and see them through from concept to reality with good problem solving skills and a ‘can do’ attitude Confident in hosting and presenting in both large and small settings Holder of a full UK driving licence, with access to own vehicle What support we will Line management from the Rector provide Support from a reference group Ongoing professional development opportunities Access to office space and provision of a laptop and mobile phone The Benefice of Rural East York is committed to the Church of England’s Safer Recruitment practices.
