    The Yorkshire Journal Issue 3 Autumn 2011 In this issue: Agatha Christie’s Disappearance Yorkshire’s Seaside Piers Wharram Percy a Lost Medieval Village Winifred Holtby: A Reappraisal The Disappearance of a Roman Mosaic Withernsea Pier Entrance Towers Above: All that remain of the Withernsea Pier are the historic entrance towers which were modelled on Conwy Castle. The pier was built in 1877 at a cost £12,000 and was nearly 1,200 feet long. The pier was gradually reduced in length through consecutive impacts by local sea craft, starting with the Saffron in 1880 then the collision by an unnamed ship in 1888. Then following a collision with a Grimsby fishing boat and finally by the ship Henry Parr in 1893. This left the once-grand pier with a mere 50 feet of damaged wood and steel. Town planners decided to remove the final section during sea wall construction in 1903. The Pier Towers have recently been refurbished. In front of the entrance towers is a model of how the pier would have once looked. The recent resurfacing of the road and associated works in the village has made a great improvement to the appearance of the village. We have a number of ongoing road discussions that may have some impact on the village. This is more long term however. 2. Duelling Improvements to the A64. Biodiversity is the huge variety of life that surrounds us, its plants, animals and insects and the way they all work together. When you are outside, in the garden, field, park, woods, river bank, wherever you are …if you look around and listen, you begin to appreciate how the immense variety of plants and wildlife that surrounds us makes our lives special. It is like a living jigsaw, each piece carefully fitting into the next, if you lose a piece, the picture is incomplete. Why is biodiversity important? – Ecosystem Services All life has an intrinsic value that we have a duty to protect and, like a jigsaw, each piece has its own part to play. The loss of one piece will affect how the next one works. We are all part of the ecosystems that surround us and so any effect on them will ultimately affect us so by protecting and helping biodiversity we are improving life for ourselves. A rich natural environment delivers numerous unseen benefits which we tend to take for granted. These are what we now call ecosystem services – things like water storage and flood control, pollination of food crops by insects even the air we breathe and the water we drink are all part of this service. There are indirect benefits as well such as improved health and wellbeing and higher property values. All of this is down to our natural environment and the biodiversity in it. In accordance with traffic authority regulations for the City of York, North Yorkshire and East Riding of Yorkshire, an order has been made prohibiting and restricting the use of certain roads and road junctions by vehicles in order to facilitate the safe holding of the Yorkshire Marathon and 10 Mile. The events will require the closure of roads and road junctions as well as the suspension of a number of Traffic Regulation Orders between 10:00 on Saturday 8th October and 22:00 on Sunday 9th October. Parking suspensions and a tow order will be in place across the route. Affected roads and areas on route are detailed below along with approximate closure timings. Please see the route map overleaf. Owston, EdD Draft Version 6.2 5 February 2012 The Owston One‐Name Study is registered with the The author is a member of the ABSTRACT In 1990, three family researchers had the fortune of discovering each other nearly simultaneously and began sharing information that became the basis of this study. While nearly all discovered Owstons and Oustons could be traced to one of three families having their origins in the original East Riding of Yorkshire, there was no evidence proving that familial connections existed among the three groups. These families originated in Ganton, Sherburn, and Thornholme in the parish of Burton Agnes. By utilizing Y-DNA testing at 43 markers, this study sought to discover if the three families could be linked genealogically, although traditional records signifying such did not exist. If connected, it would likely to have been prior to the adoption of English parish registers in 1538. Although the study is ongoing, preliminary reports link members of all three families to a common ancestor in the past. Seven of the 10 original participants share common markers of the I1 haplogroup. Of the remaining three participants, two Thornholme subjects did not match anyone else. Since genealogical data has a confirmed paper trail to the earliest known ancestor of the Thornholme family, it has been determined that non-paternity events occurred in these two lines. In addition, one Sherburn family member did not match any other participant due to an adoption in his ancestral line.
