Located right within the Aurora oval, leading research into the phenomenon happens here. There are also varied winter activities on offer in Vesterålen. At the same time, Vesterålen is also experiencing a growth in tourism during the summer season. Nature-based activ- ities are much sought after with whale safaris being most popular. The Arctic Race of Norway came to Vesterålen in 2013 and was a great success. Cycle tourism in the region is growing exponentially, and Vesterålen has become an attractive cycle destination. Early May to late August in Vesterålen is paradise for birdwatchers. Eagles can be seen all over the region throughout the year. Vesterålen consists of many islands that are ideal for boat- ing, kayaking and diving. Vesterålen is also famous for spectacular hikes, including Dronningruta (The Queen’s Route) between Stø and Nyksund and the trip to Møysalen, the highest mountain in the region. SAS/Widerøe offer several flights daily from Bodø and Tromsø to the local airports at Andenes and Stokmarknes with connecting routes from cities including Oslo. The airport at Evenes is situated a couple of hours away and the Airport Express Bus makes it easy to travel in to the region. Norwe- gian and SAS offer cheap fares year-round. All the airports have several companies offering car hire.     REGULERINGSPLAN FOR RV 82 MILJØGATE ANDENES Merknadsbehandling/Dokumenter til sluttbehandling Statens Vegvesen Region Nord, Midtre Hålogaland distrikt Harstad 16.11.2009 SAMMENDRAG Statens Vegvesen har med hjemmel i Plan og bygningslovens § 9-4 utarbeidet forslag til reguleringsplan for Rv 82, Miljøgate Andenes. Strekningen er deler av Storgata fra flyplasskrysset og til krysset ved Nordlandsbanken. Planarbeidet er gjort etter avtale med og i samråd med Andøy kommune. Hensikten med planarbeidet er å legge til rette for oppstramming av trafikale forhold langs Storgata på denne strekningen, samt bedring av forholdene for de myke trafikkantene med utvidelse og oppgradering av fortau og sikring av fotgjengeroverganger. Lokalisering av busstopp og parkeringslommer inngår også. Total lengde er ca 1 km. Prosjektet inngår som en del av trafikksikkerhetsarbeidet i Andenes sentrum. Arbeidet forutsettes gjort samtidig som kommunen foretar utskifting av sitt vann og avløpsnett som ligger i Storgata. Byggestart er avhengig av fylkeskommunale bevilgninger. Det er tidligere utarbeidet et planhefte som tar for seg saksbehandlingen fram til planen er utlagt til offentlig ettersyn, jf innholdsfortegnelsen 1-2. Etter at planen har vært utlagt til offentlig ettersyn i tiden 26.06 – 15.08.09 er det totalt innkommet 7 merknader til planforslaget med bestemmelser. Statens vegvesen har gjennomgått og kommentert disse. Etter avtale med kommunen ble det arrangert et informasjonsmøte om planen den 1.oktober 2009. Det foreligger i alt 7 innspill etter dette møtet. I tillegg har det vært drøftet med kommunen ulike detaljløsninger i planen. Planen er revidert 01.11.09 og gjennomgått med kommunen i møte 10.11.09. Det er ikke fremmet innsigelse til planen og dette medfører etter Statens vegvesen sitt syn at planen kan egengodkjennes av kommunestyret.

    NHC 64th Meeting NHC Virtual 20 + 21 April 2021 National Report NORWAY NATIONAL REPORT NORWAY Executive Summery This report gives the summary of the activities and events that have taken place within the Norwegian Hydrographic Service (NHS) since the last report given at the NHC63 Conference in Helsinki, April 2019. Some highlights: New organizational structure Pilot project for Marine Base Maps in Norway Digital Nautical Publications New Hydrographic Infrastructure Continued high activity in the Mareano project in both coastal and open sea arctic areas COVID-19 1. Hydrographic Office 2020 has been yet another eventful and challenging year for the Norwegian Hydrographic Service (NHS), and indeed for the entire Norwegian Mapping Authority, of which we are a part. 2020 started as normal, but in March, Covid affected us in Norway as it did the rest of the world. As of March 13, we went in to a national lock down in Norway. At the NHS we were all sent home, our survey vessel M/S Hydrograf was ordered to port, and the crew sent home. The next few weeks were quite chaotic. Not all of our employees were able to work from home. Some of our production systems were not adapted to working online, and some of the data we handle are subject to restrictions making it illegal to work on them via the internet. Our IT department and some of our software suppliers worked around the clock, and within a matter of weeks our production line was operational again albeit at a slightly reduced rate. A gradual return to the office was planned for August, but due to a flare up in Covid cases after the summer holidays, the return was postponed, and as of October, most of our employees have again been working from home.

To what extent this relationship reflects a causal effect of education is, however, largely unknown. We rely on the staggered introduction of a major Norwegian education reform to get exogenous variation in respondents’ level of education. The reform lifted the bottom of the education distribution by increasing the compulsory years of education by two years. We find no significant differences in immigration attitudes between those who were educated in the old and the new education system. The municipalities are represented by 5 inter- municipal counsils; Vest-Finnmark Rådet (7 municipalities in Troms and Finnmark County), Vesterålen regionråd (6 municipalities in Nordland County), Salten Regionråd (10 municipalities in Nordland County), Indre Helgeland Regionråd (5 municipalities in Nordland County) and Helgelandsrådet (12 municipalities in Nordland County); 1. In your view, what have been the EU’s main achievements and failures under each of the three priorities in the 2016 Joint Communication? Vest-Finnmark Rådet, Vesterålen regionråd, Salten Regionråd, Indre Helgeland Regionråd and Helgelandsrådet embraces the EU’s engagement in promoting sustainable development in the Arctic. This priority marks a positive shift in how the Arctic is perceived as a strategically important territory, with green growth potential for the region and Europe. The EU’s top priority should be to assist the region in overcoming the Arctic paradox. That is, changing a demographic trend that is inversely correlated with economic growth. A stable demographic development is a necessary precondition for development and security in the Arctic regions. The most important means of meeting regional challenges in the Nordic/European part of the Arctic is by making use of the large natural resources in the region to stimulate economic growth and create new attractive jobs including utilizing the research institutions in the Arctic. The EU’s Arctic engagement shows great achievement, as exemplified by the processes leading to the report on Arctic investment needs in 2017, and the EU Arctic Forum in 2019.

BY SOPHIE CAMPBELL. PHOTOGRAPHS BY YADID LEVY The fishing village of Reine, on Moskenesøya in the Lofoten Islands 90 f you are a cod, these are the killing fields. Bunches of drying fish twist in the wind on birch frames the size of Dutch barns, and chunky working boats bristle with radar, net winches and fish-finding gear. If you are an artist, this is a land of light, clear and simple, which is why so many have made their way here in the past century and a half. If you are a visitor, this is where mountains shoot Iout of the sea like fins, their reflections diving to unfathomable depths in the fjords, and sweet little wooden houses cluster in shades of lemon and dove and brick and sky. But you mustn’t look too hard in case you fly off roads raised to let meltwater flow away and edged only with flimsy red poles. The Lofoten Islands barely qualify as an archipelago. They are more like a vestigial tail off the coast of Norway, 100km above the Arctic Circle and 230km south of Tromsø, connected to the mainland by a bridge about a kilometre long. More bridges swoop between the seven main islands, and around them skitter innumerable rocks and skerries. Fish is everywhere. It glints through the history and swims through the art.
