Li Abstract A catalogue of the family Sesiidae in China is provided based partially on the research of the previous literature and partially on the study of the specimens in our collection. Insect Egg Size and Shape Evolve with Ecology but Not Developmental Rate Samuel H

S. de Medeiros1 & Cassandra G. Extavour1,2* Over the course of evolution, organism size has diversified markedly. Changes in size are thought to have occurred because of developmental, morphological and/or ecological pressures. To perform phylogenetic tests of the potential effects of these pressures, here we generated a dataset of more than ten thousand descriptions of insect eggs, and combined these with genetic and life-history datasets. We show that, across eight orders of magnitude of variation in egg volume, the relationship between size and shape itself evolves, such that previously predicted global patterns of scaling do not adequately explain the diversity in egg shapes. We show that egg size is not correlated with developmental rate and that, for many insects, egg size is not correlated with adult body size. Instead, we find that the evolution of parasitoidism and aquatic oviposition help to explain the diversification in the size and shape of insect eggs. Our study suggests that where eggs are laid, rather than universal allometric constants, underlies the evolution of insect egg size and shape. Size is a fundamental factor in many biological processes. The size of an 526 families and every currently described extant hexapod order24 organism may affect interactions both with other organisms and with (Fig. 1a and Supplementary Fig. 1). We combined this dataset with the environment1,2, it scales with features of morphology and physi- backbone hexapod phylogenies25,26 that we enriched to include taxa ology3, and larger animals often have higher fitness4. -

Key words: Lepidoptera, Sesiidae, world literature. Einleitung: Die Literatur über die Schmetterlingsfamilie der Glasflügler (Sesiidae) ist weit verstreut und mittlerweile auch bereits recht umfangreich. In der vorliegenden Arbeit wurde der Versuch unternommen, die Weltliteratur der Sesiiden zusammenzutragen und aufzulisten. Grundlage dafür waren alle erschienenen Bände des Record of Zoological Literature, Vol. 1-6 (1864-1869), fortgesetzt als Zoological Record, Vol. 7-135 (1870-1998/99) sowie der Lepidopterorum Catalogus, Pars 31, Aegeriidae (DALLA TORRE & STRAND 1925). Darauf aufbauend wurden alle Querverweise in den Literaturverzeichnissen der zitierten Arbeiten geprüft. Aufgenommen wurden nicht nur Originalarbeiten über Sesiidae, sondern auch faunistische Arbeiten, die Angaben über Sesiidae enthalten, da gerade in solchen Arbeiten oft sehr wertvolle Freilandbeobachtungen und Hinweise zur Biologie der entsprechenden Arten zu finden sind. Auf diese Weise sind bisher 3750 Literaturzitate zusammengekommen. Von diesen konnten jedoch erst 1461 (39 %) überprüft werden. Das sind jene Arbeiten, die sich als Original oder Kopie in meiner Bibliothek befinden. -

Standard, chemical pesticide-based control options for flies are becoming increasingly difficult due to insecticide resistance and regulatory constraints. Biopesticides based on naturally occurring fungal pathogens could provide an alternative tool for integrated pest management (IPM) in poultry production. Here we addressed several issues related to field application, persistence and performance of fungal biopesticides against flies. We demonstrated that residual spray treatments of fungal biopesticides, Beauveria bassiana and Metarhizium anisopliae could sustainably suppress fly populations through lethal and sub-lethal impacts on reproductive output. The study developed a cost-effective field delivery system whereby teneral adult flies are targeted via the application of oil-formulated spores to the lower portions of basement walls where flies momentarily rest to harden themselves following emergence. -

OConnor Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, Museum of Zoology, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA e-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT: A new family, Bochkovocoptidae, is proposed for a new genus and species of psoroptidian mite (Astigmata), Boch- kovocoptes otomys sp. n., collected from the follicles of the facial vibrissae of Otomys denti (Rodentia: Muridae) from Uganda. The new taxon is characterized by retrorse processes and striated apical membranes on the subcapitular rutella, strong retrorse processes on the segments of the anterior legs, well developed pretarsi on legs I–III and a reduced pretarsus on leg IV. The new taxon is hypothesized to be related to the families Sarcoptidae and Rhyncoptidae. KEY WORDS: Follicle parasite, taxonomy, Africa. Zusammenfassung Die vorliegende Arbeit gibt einen umfassenden Überblick über die im Land Brandenburg vorkom- menden Glasflügler. Für alle der 22 bislang nachgewiesenen Arten werden die Verbreitung ein- schließlich einer Rasterkarte dargestellt, eine kurze Beschreibung der Habitatansprüche und der Biologie gegeben sowie Abbildungen von lebenden und präparierten Faltern gebracht. 1. Einleitung Mit diesem Katalog, der alle 22 in Brandenburg einschließlich Berlin vorkommenden Arten der Glasflügler behandelt, sollen die wichtigsten Fakten über die jeweilige Art in gestraffter Form dargestellt werden und der aktuelle Kenntnisstand der Verbrei- tung auf Messtischblatt-Basis dokumentiert werden. Gleichzeitig soll mit dieser Ar- beit angeregt werden, vorhandene Lücken in der Verbreitung durch gezielte Suche zu schließen, wobei die beigefügten Fotos der Glasflügler eine Bestimmung der jeweili- gen Art unterstützen werden. Der Großteil aller Sesien-Nachweise erfolgte in den Ländern Brandenburg und Berlin in den Jahren nach 1990, maßgeblich gefördert durch die Verfügbarkeit und den Ge- brauch synthetischer Pheromone. -

Introduction This manual gives advice on how to grow fruit in schools using organic methods. Crops covered include apples, pears, strawberries, cane fruits (raspberries, blackberries and hybrid berries) and bush fruits (gooseberries, blackcurrants, redcurrants and whitecurrants). Also included is a section suggesting ways in which the school and wider community can reconnect with the food they eat through growing fruit. We appreciate that teachers and learning support staff are already very busy, with little additional time to devote to high-maintenance crops. So, from a time and maintenance perspective, these are the easiest fruits to grow. Varietal recommendations are based mostly on the ability of the variety to fruit within the school summer or autumn term-time, although precise date of harvest will obviously vary between regions, according to local climatic factors. We have not included a chapter on stone fruits (plums, cherries, apricots etc) as they are a little trickier to grow and many varieties ripen during the school summer holidays. -
