Map 24 Asturica-Conimbriga Compiled by E.W Map 24 Asturica-Conimbriga Compiled by E.W. Haley, 1996 Introduction Material for compiling a map of north-west Iberia varies in terms of accessibility, completeness and reliability. In addition to Schulten (1974) and Tovar (1976; 1989), there are now TIR Conimbriga (1991) and Caesaraugusta (1993); for Portugal (omitted from TIR Conimbriga), Alarcão (1988) is indispensable. Tovar’s volume on Tarraconensis (1989) was incomplete at his death and reflects his primarily philological and etymological interests. TIR omits certain toponyms attested by epigraphy alone, and the quality of its maps is uneven. The physical environment has changed appreciably since antiquity with virtually all of the major rivers dammed, particularly from the 1940s to the 1970s. I have attempted to reconstruct their ancient courses as accurately as possible. No substantial shoreline changes since antiquity have been identified. The varied Celtic and Celtiberian legacy of the Iron Age survives most visibly in thousands of castros, castella or citânias of the north-west Iberian peninsula (Tranoy 1981). Even TIR omits most of these native, generally hilltop, settlements known occasionally through excavation but mostly from survey; I have aimed to mark only the best-known or most representative of them. In fact many, if not the majority, of the named Roman towns shown represent little more than pre-Roman castros endowed with varying degrees of Roman material, construction and political institutions. An attempt has been made to record all ancient place names attested in the literary and documentary sources, and to mark as many of them as possible. A desire to include the archaeologically most significant sites has dictated the choice of rural habitations and mines, but it is important to note that even Domergue’s repertorium of mines (1987) is incomplete. There is no equivalent for the north-west of Sillières’ compendium of roads for southern Iberia (1990). The main highways indicated by the itineraries are shown, together with those secondary routes whose course is confirmed in places by milestones. Many scores of villas in north-west Iberia have come to light through complete or partial excavation and survey, even since Gorges (1979) published his study. Those marked here are a representative selection: they are ones that display, through excavation, outstanding architectural features, ground-plans or stratigraphic sequences. Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been indicated in the thesis. 2 Abstract This thesis examines the changes which occurred in the cultural landscapes of northwest Iberia, between the end of the Iron Age and the consolidation of the region by both the native elite and imperial authorities during the early Roman empire. As a means to analyse the impact of Roman power on the native peoples of northwest Iberia five study areas in northern Portugal were chosen, which stretch from the mountainous region of Trás-os-Montes near the modern-day Spanish border, moving west to the Tâmega Valley and the Atlantic coastal area. The divergent physical environments, different social practices and political affinities which these diverse regions offer, coupled with differing levels of contact with the Roman world, form the basis for a comparative examination of the area. In seeking to analyse the transformations which took place between the Late pre-Roman Iron Age and the early Roman period historical, archaeological and anthropological approaches from within Iberian academia and beyond were analysed. These names prove the presence of speakers of a Celtic language in this area, but there are also names of other origins. (Marc Bloch, Apologie pour l'histoire [Paris 1952] 73) While the range of occupations attested for residents of the city of Rome has been the subject of several studies,1 considerably less attention has been focused upon jobs in the provinces. This disparity may be due partly to an understandably greater interest in the imperial capital than in peripheral regions, but also and perhaps chiefly to the fact that the columbaria of Rome provide convenient, "closed" samples of inscriptions from a single city within limited chronological bounds, whereas the epigraphic evidence (which is by far the largest segment of testimony)2 for provincial jobs, being scattered over vast geographical tracts and extensive periods of time, is far less diagnostic. An analysis of the epitaphs from a single provincial city would in most cases yield only a handful of jobs, while an attempted study of a chronologically restricted sample would be considerably impeded by our inability to date closely the majority of the inscriptions. For better or worse, then, all the inscriptions of a province or region should be studied as a whole, preferably in constant comparison with avail- able literary and iconographie evidence, and the provincial historian may thereby hope to reap a large selection of job titles from his chosen bailiwick.3 32 33 The present paper examines the types of jobs attested for the residents of Spain from the advent of the Romans in the late third century B.C.

Este ano também marcou uma intervenção dos serviços oficiais e o início das escava- ções arqueológicas sistemáticas que levaram à progressiva valorização das ruínas. O principal objetivo deste trabalho é apresentar os resultados da pesquisa arquivística efetuada no Arquivo da Universidade de Coimbra (AUC). A investigação realizada permitiu reconstruir a ligação histórica da Faculdade de Letras da Universidade de Coimbra (FLUC) à cidade romana de Conimbriga.
