Jugoslavija, sve se oko tebe ispravlja i savija” (“All Yugoslavia is dancing rock and roll, everything around you is straightening and bending”)1 The point of the departure for this study is Eric Hobsbawm’s dictum that nationhood and nationalism, although constructed from above, cannot be understood unless also analysed from below – i.e. “in terms of the assumptions, hopes, needs, longings and interests of ordinary people, which are not necessarily national and still less nationalist.”2 Drawing on this dictum, the present thesis examines the sense of community in Yugoslav society through the analysis of Yugoslav rock music culture. My focus is on the Yugoslav-ness of this culture – a culture commonly referred to as Yu-Rock or Yugo-rock – in the specific socio-politico-economic situation of 1980s Yugoslavia. My argument is that the Yugoslavness of Yu-Rock was inextricably connected to a larger, over-arching, web of knowledge and ideas to which it related, most importantly those concerning different conceptions of Yugoslavism as an “imagined community.” The point here is that the sense of Yugoslavness should not be reduced to any particular form of Yugoslavism, because Yugoslavism meant different things for different people. Thus, the concept of “Yugoslavness” that I operate with in the thesis is influenced by the work of anthropologist Stef Jansen, who argues that Yugoslavness was not always openly “Yugoslavist,” but rather more about open interethnic boundaries and thereby most often assuming a pronouncedly tolerant, antinationalist and cosmopolitan character.3 In this regard, I want to underline that the existing research on rock music in the former Yugoslav lands has recognised the antinationalist character of Yu-Rock and has stressed its role as 1 Elektični orgazam, ”Igra rokenrol cela Jugoslavija” Letim, sanjam, dišem (Belgrade: PGP RTB, 1988). This is a direct translation from Serbo-Croatian, which corresponds to the English phrase “twist and turn.” 2 Eric J. Hobsbawm, Nations and Nationalism since 1780 (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1990), p. 10. 3 Stef Jansen, “Cosmopolitan openings and closures in the post-Yugoslav antinationalism” in Cosmopolitanism in Practice, eds by Magdalena Nowicka, Maria Rovisco (Farnham, England / Burlington, VT : Ashgate Pub, 2009), p. 80. 4 an alternative to nationalism of the 1980s. Nevertheless, the existing research has dealt with the issues concerning Yugoslavness of the 1980s Yu-Rock only in passing, either peripherally or from the perspective of the dissolution of the common Yu-Rock scene in the 1990s. Thus, very few of the central questions concerning its agency, origin and causality in the 1980s have been asked. This study is an inquiry into this issue – the issue concerning questions of agency, origin and causality of Yugoslavness in 1980s Yu-Rock. This is not an easy task. Yugoslav history is a complicated subject – not least because, as Metthew McCullock puts it, Yugoslav identity is contradictory, located at the crossroads of “nowhere” and “everywhere.”4 This means that locating Yugoslavness can easily ends up by being arbitrary, defined either too rigidly or too loosely that “nothing” or “everything” can meet the

Razpad Jugoslavije in vpliv rock 'n' rolla v protivojnih akcijah v Srbiji v devetdesetih letih prejšnjega stoletja Diplomsko delo obravnava tematiko razpada Jugoslavije in vpliv rocka v protivojnih akcijah v Srbiji. Rock ni preprečil tragičnega konca SFRJ, to niti ni bil namen, brez dvoma pa izpeljani glasbeni projekti predstavljajo velik uspeh in iskro upanja vsem narodom nekdanje skupne države.

  • The Memory of the Avant- Garde and the New Wave in the Contemporary
The Memory of the Avant- Garde and the New Wave in the Contemporary Serbian Novel Marko Avramović Institute for Literature and Arts, 2 Kralja Milana St, 11000 Belgrade, Serbia https://orcid.org/0000-0001-5878-5777 [email protected] This article is dealing with the topic of two past twentieth-century epochs in a few representative Serbian novels at the turn from the twentieth to the twenty-first century. These are the 1980s and the New Wave era in Yugoslavia, an epoch close to the past that can still be written about from the perspective of an immediate witness, and the avant-garde era, that is, the period between the two world wars marked in art by different movements of the historical avant-garde. The novels Milenijum u Beogradu (Millennium in Belgrade, 2000) by Vladimir Pištalo, Vrt u Veneciji (The Garden in Venice, 2002) by Mileta Prodanović, and Kiša i hartija (Rain and Paper, 2004) by Vladimir Tasić are being interpreted. In these novels, it is particularly noteworthy that the two aforementioned epochs are most commonly linked as part of the same creative and intellectual currents in the twentieth century. Keywords: Serbian literature / contemporary Serbian novel / literary avant-garde / New Wave / Zenitism / rock and roll / Pištalo, Vladimir / Prodanović, Mileta / Tasić, Vladimir In Vladimir Tasić’s Farewell Gift (2001), one of the key contemporary Serbian novels, the narrator at some points expresses a high apprecia- tion of the two epochs. One is personally experienced, while the other has long been placed in historical niches

Its legacy will never disappear, and it will always be a great influence for new artists but is important to find out the reasons why it has become what it is in now, and what is the expected future for the genre. This project is going to be focused on the analysis of some im- portant business aspects related with rock music and its de- cline, if exists. The collapse of Gibson guitars will be analyzed, because if rock music is in decline, then the collapse of Gibson is a good evidence of this. Also, the performance of independ- ent and major record labels through history will be analyzed to understand better the health state of the genre. The same with music festivals that today seem to be increasing their popularity at the expense of smaller types of live-music events. THE CLASH AND MASS MEDIA MESSAGES FROM THE ONLY BAND THAT MATTERS Sean Xavier Ahern A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS August 2012 Committee: Jeremy Wallach, Advisor Kristen Rudisill © 2012 Sean Xavier Ahern All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Jeremy Wallach, Advisor This thesis analyzes the music of the British punk rock band The Clash through the use of media imagery in popular music in an effort to inform listeners of contemporary news items. I propose to look at the punk rock band The Clash not solely as a first wave English punk rock band but rather as a “news-giving” group as presented during their interview on the Tom Snyder show in 1981. I argue that the band’s use of communication metaphors and imagery in their songs and album art helped to communicate with their audience in a way that their contemporaries were unable to. Broken down into four chapters, I look at each of the major releases by the band in chronological order as they progressed from a London punk band to a globally known popular rock act. Viewing The Clash as a “news giving” punk rock band that inundated their lyrics, music videos and live performances with communication images, The Clash used their position as a popular act to inform their audience, asking them to question their surroundings and “know your rights.” iv For Pat and Zach Ahern Go Easy, Step Lightly, Stay Free. v ACKNOWLEDGMENTS This thesis would not have been possible without the help of many, many people.
