As always, we are most grateful to our 81 vendors who have contributed an amazing array of material. We endeavour to provide lots for all budgets and to have a diverse cross section of material catering to as many collecting fields as possible including coins and banknotes. This auction is no different other than an increase in Western Australian material following our very successful March auction that had a 83% clearance rate with a total hammer price of nearly $300,000, and another strong section of China following Sale 27 in 2020. The start of the auction presents a perfect opportunity to invest in gold with a range of the Perth Mint 1986-1999 Nugget series of coins reserved conservatively at the current gold price followed by some sovereigns and banknote sets. The box lots are always popular and these should not be overlooked on this occasion as there are some worthwhile “Balance of Consignment” lots. Once again, the collections section contains over 570 collections including Australia, World volumes and thematics. The WA section on Sunday morning has been increased in size as per my earlier comments with the continuation of a specialised postmark collection that was assigned in January. The first half from “A” to “K” attracted huge interest and included a Balbarrup Post & Telegraph ORS cancel on a 1905 postcard selling for $4200 plus BP on a reserve of $100! We have been fortunate to have another lovely cross section of kangaroos and KGV, noting that these are continuing to obtain strong prices in auction and of late, are appearing on a regular basis on collectors wants lists. Many of you have indicated the desire to fill gaps in these areas of your collection, especially as there is no interest been paid on accumulated funds sitting in the bank! I have been energised of late to see so many returning to the hobby in these Covid times and certainly we have had far more interest from overseas collectors. In fact, recently we sold “archived” kangaroo and KGV lots to the value of $14,000 from collectors exploring past auctions online! I have tried to use the colour plates to illustrate the many highlights in this sale which extend into the pre-decimal and decimal areas of Australia as well as the Territories. Once again, I have separated early FDC’s & PNC’s following the increased interest in these at recent stamp shows here in WA. Our range of single world lots endeavours to cater to the collector who are seeking the “harder to obtain” high values especially in Great Britain with a gorgeous 1882 £5 orange superb used with central upright Belfast cds. (Lot 2061) The demand for China continues unabated and we have tried to meet this with a strong selection of lots, the highlight being the 1968 8f "The Whole Country is Red" cancelled to order with a neat part 1968 corner cds & full MUH gum (Lot 2208) Reserved at $25,000, this was purchased through John Bull in Hong Kong for nearly $50,000 in 2006. This is an excellent opportunity to secure this rarely seen issue. There is a choice of two 1980 Monkey singles plus a block of 4 with other high catalogued issues of that period also in blocks of 4 as well as a range of MUH Miniature Sheets in superb condition. Needless to say, there are too many lots to focus on individually here so please take your time to enjoy the catalogue and may I suggest you peruse this in combination with the website (www.acestampauctions.com) where there are an additional 1200+ images. I wanted to take this opportunity to update all our clients on my future plans with Ace Stamp Auctions. Our last “scheduled” auction will be held on 27th & 28th November which will be our 30th auction, a figure which when I started in 2008, I never thought we would achieve. By then, we will have offered over 50,000 lots with total pre- sale reserves of $8 million & almost $7 million in auction sales to 8000+ bidders on behalf of over 1500 vendors. As many of you know a brain bleed 18 months ago slowed me down & the subsequent 2 auctions have taken me considerably longer to prepare as I continue to recover my cognitive abilities. We have been very grateful for the ongoing support of so many of you during this time both as customers and vendors, not to mention the additional describing efforts of both John McPhee & Trevor Lacy. My thinking in moving forward is we WILL continue to have auctions but probably one a year and these will not be scheduled for a firm date but instead be announced when we have 2000-3000 lots ready to go for auction. I am more than happy to assist our strong vendor base with the sale of their lots but I can no longer guarantee a firm sale date or maintain the 3 actions per year. Both Christine and myself are truly grateful for all the support we have received especially from the local WA collecting community. We look forward to continuing organising the annual Perth Stamp & Coin Show and being actively involved in the local stamp “scene” and maybe even returning to 2-3 sales a year in the future but for now we are going to spend more time together enjoying our garden, playing golf and spoiling our 2 rescue dogs not to mention, even getting around to my own stamps! In closing, sincere thanks to you all and I look forward to seeing of many of you as possible at the auction. Ian Boulton CONDITIONS OF SALE BIDS The highest bidder shall be the purchaser. There were no survivors among the 329 passengers and crew members. There was unanimous official opinion among authorities that an inflight breakup caused by an explosion in the forward cargo compartment occurred. Based on the direct, tangible and circumstantial evidence of four similar accidents as described in six aircraft accident reports and using the benefit of hindsight, the conclusion of this investigator and author of this report is that the probable cause of the accident to Air India Flight 182 was faulty wiring shorting on the door unlatch motor causing the forward cargo door to inadvertently rupture open in flight probably at one or both of the midspan latches leading to an explosion of explosive decompression in the forward cargo compartment and subsequent aircraft breakup. • The RCMP and Air Canada Flight 621
CHAPTER 7 The RCMP and Air Canada Flight 621 s Sterling Moore and I headed out from our apartment on Green AValley Road in Toronto’s affluent Hogg’s Hollow for a day of fishing in the Muskokas, Gordon Lightfoot’s song 'In the Early Morning Rain’ was playing on the car radio. The sun hung as a red orb in an early-morning summer sky. It was foretelling a clear but hot day ahead. My work partner and I made a stop at the Airport Shell Station in Malton to gas up. We both worked shifts at the Old Malton Airport as part of a contingent of RCMP officers stationed there. Our duties were varied, but security of a federal property, dealing with immigration and customs issues, and traffic control topped the list. That morning dawned as a beautiful clear and sunny July day, the first of three days of well-deserved leave. After getting gas and talking to the people at the service centre, we exited the complex. We planned to head north by backtracking along the 401 East to the 400 exit, then north towards Barrie. It was approximately 8:00 a.m., July 5th, 1970. We had not travelled any more than a few hundred feet when we were stopped by our duty corporal, Corporal Marshall, who had seen us leaving the gas station. He had the lights of the police car flashing, the siren blaring. What was going on? That question was answered instantaneously when he came to the driver’s side window of our car and asked us to pull it off the road and come with him.
