Tackling methane leakage is vital for natural gas to respond to the threat of climate change, and Maarten Wetselaar (Shell’s Integrated Gas and New Energies Director) used his position on the leadership panel to announce that Shell will keep methane emissions below 0.2% of total natural gas extracted and transported from projects it operates by 2025.

The Opening Ceremony’s panel was moderated by CNBC’s Steve Sedgwick featuring leaders from the six Gastech 2018 host consortium companies: CEPSA, Enagás, Naturgy, Reganosa, Repsol, Técnicas Reunidas, which he called ‘an extraordinary panel of eminent experts and leaders in natural gas and trading.’
The consortium discussed the importance of Spain as a regional gas hub for South West Europe, while also acknowledging that the biggest challenge facing the natural gas industry is delivering security of supply while cutting its carbon footprint and integrating with renewables, so that it is an end-game fuel not simply a transitional fuel.

Representatives from China, India, Japan, Korea, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, Philippines, Bangladesh and Pakistan along with suppliers from Australia, US and Canada convened to generate meaningful dialogue on developing new demand centres and new infrastructure in Asia to drive market liquidity and the commoditisation of LNG. Gastech’s special invitation-only session focusing on the dynamics of LNG trade and procurement welcomed a wealth of senior professionals to the room. Held under the Chatham House rule of non-attribution, the lively and keenly-attended forum welcomed many influential speakers and attendees. The opening session raised a hugely-challenging issue: how to achieve a degree of certainty for the LNG supplier, whilst creating maximum flexibility for the buyer. Can a ‘win-win’ scenario ever be achieved? Major names in both supply and demand, including Repsol, Petronas, RWE and GAIL sparked constructively off each other and drove some excellent debate throughout. Another major obstacle the industry faces is creating standardisation across contracts, and this was examined in detail by experts representing the Energy Charter Secretariat and specialist lawyers in this field. Two further senior panel debates also examined the increasingly-disruptive role of technology in trading, as well as the new and diversifying market opportunities out there for both suppliers and portfolio players. Excellent contributions across both panels from companies that included NextDecade, Cheniere, Jordan Cove LNG, Nakilat and Cepsa meant the sessions delivered strong content packed into a single afternoon. 89%

This year, Gastech’s Women in Energy programme took on a new title – Diversity in Energy. The sessions set out to provide a platform for discussion between speakers from companies including Enagás, ExxonMobil, SNC-Lavalin, Naturgy, National Grid on how diversity and inclusion within the sector can be achieved across the board. Panels discussed the importance of industry leaders supporting and creating diverse workforces. This was compared to the development of employee-led networks to strive for greater diversity in the workplace, with Uniper’s Shiva Meyer and Larissa Leienbach highlighting how their company approaches the subject in both ways. The sessions were rounded off with leading figures from the industry sharing their experience of reaching top level management. Marta Margarit of Sedigas, Astrid Alvarez, Grupo Energia Bogota and Laura Rejon-Perez, Repsol S.A. shared inspiring stories, noting the challenges they faced along their journeys, provoking conversations around eliminating obstacles that lie in the way in of diverse workforces. Discussions and networking continued at ExxonMobil’s Power Play drinks reception, part of a series of international events that celebrate the impact of diversity.
