UWS Sorrento 2013 Visit Leaflet.Pub Upper Wharfedale School Humanities Department Bay of Naples Trip 2013 Including Pompeii, Vesuvius, Capri, Amalfi and Sorrento History - Geography - Art - Religious Studies - Travel and Tourism Science - Performing Arts - MFL - Music Bay of Naples Itinerary © eurom © eurom Cathedral Bell Tower in Sorrento View of Vesuvius from Sorrento Introduction In October 2013 students from Upper Wharfedale School will have another opportunity to visit the beautiful Bay of Naples in Italy as part of an educational visit organised by the Humanities Department. The visit is cross curricular and is aimed at students in years 9 -11 who are studying in the following areas: geography, travel and tourism, history and art. However, students who would like the opportunity to learn about Italy’s history, geography, art and culture are more than welcome to apply for a place. The visit will provide students with a rich “hands on” learning experience of history, geography, art and architecture which could never be replicated in the classroom. Our students will be able experience life in an ancient Roman town, see the islands of mythical legends, enjoy the regional culture and traditions, travel through diverse and beautiful landscapes including the island of Capri. Day One From Naples airport to a local trattoria for lunch before visiting Vesuvius where, under supervision of a specialist guide, students will walk up to a viewing area at the crater’s edge. This vantage point will also provide panoramic views across the Bay of Naples towards Capri and Sorrento. In the evening there will be a guided tour of Sorrento’s historic centre. © eurom Mount Vesuvius Villa Jovis in Capri Day Two After breakfast the coach drives to Pompeii for a guided tour of this world famous archaeological site to see how people lived in 79 AD at the time Mount Vesuvius erupted and engulfed Pompeii. This is followed by visits to Amalfi and Ravello on the Amalfi coast with superb views, including Il Galli rocks where the mythological Sirens lived according to legendary story of Odysseus. Students will be able to experience local 'culture' by ordering and eating in a typical Italian trattoria. In the evening the students will visit a traditional Gelateria in Sorrento for an ice-cream making class. Day Three A ferry across the Bay of Naples takes the students to the island of Capri where a day of exploration will include guided visits to Villa Jovis, built by emperor Tiberius and completed in AD 27, and the Axel Munthe Museum. The towns of Capri and Anacapri will also be visited and lunch provided at a local trattoria. In the evening there will be free time in Sorrento for souvenir shopping and an option to attend the Sorrento Musical with its traditional Neapolitan songs, dances and folklore. Day Fou r After breakfast the students are taken by coach to Naples airport. Accommodation and general information The Tourist Hotel in Sorrento Hotel’s restaurant The three star Tourist Hotel is located about 500 metres from the heart of Sorrento and offers a very comfortable environment including a typical Sorrento citrus garden. Sorrento in the region of Campania Sorrento and main places of interest Sorrento is located in the southern region of Campania 54 km south of Naples and central to many historical locations as well as national parks and reserves including Vesuvius, Amalfi Coast and Marina di Punta Campanella. © 2013 Eurom Limited .

    Sorrento, Capri, the Amalfi Coast and Naples 24 - 31 March 2019 from £1795.00 A tempting Spring break to Italy, relaxing in the mild climate of the Amalfi coast and the Bay of Naples. We will be based in Sorrento on the Amalfi coast for the first three nights, where we will visit the Villa Rufolo and Villa Cimbrone. These are the classic Amalfi gardens laid out in terraces where umbrella pines and cypresses shade classical geometric beds edged with box and filled with modern flowers. The site of Villa Cimbrone on a cliff top promontory overlooking the sea is beyond compare. We will also take the ferry to the enchanting island of Capri and explore some of its captivating sights. We travel round the Bay of Naples, breaking our journey with visits to the unique archaeological wonders of Pompeii and Herculaneum, to the pulsating port of Naples itself. We travel out to the north of the city to spend a day at the impressive palace and gardens of La Caserta. This huge palace, with equally grand and impressive gardens, was constructed for the Bourbon Kings of Naples and on completion in the 18th century it was the largest royal residence in the world. Finally a day of art and archaeological treasures as we tour the hot-blooded city of Naples, rich with the aroma of Neapolitan cuisine. Itinerary Day 1 We depart by coach from York for Manchester Airport in time for our scheduled flight to Naples (provisional times 08.00/12.00). Upon arrival we will transfer to our hotel in Sorrento, where we will stay for the next three nights.

The gardens of the cloister of Santa Chiara are of not only horticultural but also great historical and cultural interest. The cloisters are located behind the Gothic Church built in 1320. You have very little information about the origins of the cloister gardens as the Monastery allowed its nuns very little contact with the outside world. In the 1700's, life in the Monastery changed significantly and the Mother Superior engaged the Architect Domenico Antonio Vaccaro to decorate the cloister which was in that time used also for parties and concerts. Vaccaro built the gardens as we see them today including the 72 tile covered pillars of the pergola, the tile covered benches and fountains, tiles being a traditional form of art in Campania. The plantings in the raised flower beds are representative of the antique monastic tradition with vegetables and citrus fruits as well as ornamental plants. Then your guide will lead you on a short walk through the street of “Spaccanapoli” and you will reach Piazza San Domenico where you will taste the Naples’ typical pastry “ Sfogliatella” with a legendary Espresso .

    ANACAPRI Il nome deriva dal greco ànà, (sopra) e Capri, Anacapri, ovvero Capri di sopra, così come l'avevano soprannominata i greci. Questo splendido borgo, che oggi costituisce un comune a sé stante, è parte integrante dell'isola. Abitata fin da epoca romana, come testimoniano numerosi resti, Anacapri ebbe il suo periodo di massimo splendore fra Ottocento e Novecento, quando divenne un ambito "buen retiro" per artisti di tutta Europa, che qui venivano a trascorrere delle felici vacanze e a trovare ispirazione. Da vedere Proprio nel comune di Anacapri si trova la celebrata Grotta Azzurra, la cui notorietà mondiale data già dal XIX secolo. L'antro ha una apertura parzialmente sommersa dal mare ed a seconda del ciclo delle mareel'accesso può essere più o meno complicato.
