Covid-19 Information Page Developing the players of tomorrow, today

We’re fully aware that the impact from Covid-19 will continue to be felt for the months ahead. With At Whitley Bay Sporting Club, our focus is on player development. We want to provide the best possible constantly changing legislation and information, the club have appointed two dedicated Covid Officers experience for our players and their families. We’re extremely proud of our club, our reputation within - Ayesha Foster and Phil Welton - to ensure the club is up-to-date with all the relevant information. the community, and what we’ve achieved so far.

Please be assured that we are prepared for this and take this responsibility very seriously; and all the Having a clear club philosophy allows us: necessary risk assessments, PPE requirements and up-to-date information remain a priority. The club • to have clear principles to inform our practice & decisions have given all coaches and volunteers free club branded face coverings. • to ensure a consistent offering to all players • to build a recognized & renowned club identify Coaches and club officials are regularly briefed on any updates and all our information can be found on our website - www.whitleybaysportingclub.co.uk - under our Covid-19 section. Our aim is to develop the players of tomorrow, today by: • instilling a lifelong love of football in our children Please refer to this page if you have any queries regarding how the club are dealing with anything • help our children become better people Covid related. • help our children become better players

We achieve these 3 aims across our junior football provision by following three key principles:

Coaching the person Create learning environments based on core values of respect, effort, fun, and use the power of football to help our children become better people.

Development-focussed & Player-centered Prioritise the development of every individual player over the result of the game. Encourage and embrace mistakes as learning opportunities, promote the “power of practice”, and empower children to make their own decisions.

Games-based practices Use a games-based approach to practice design to help our children become better players.

We encourage all players (and supporters) to support good play and sportsmanship, irrespective of which team is playing; and we praise effort and performance more than results. Our coaches - all of whom hold valid Criminal Record Check (CRC) and safeguarding certificates - are encouraged to create the right learning environment for their players, reinforcing the core values of RESPECT, EFFORT and FUN.

• RESPECT for coaches, officials, opponents, spectators, and each other • EFFORT always try your best • FUN enjoy yourself through working hard playing the game we love

There are also opportunities for players to develop valuable skills and experience by qualifying as coaches and referees (at the appropriate ages). As well as supporting our coaches through their FA coaching qualifications, the club also runs in-house coaching mentor sessions, ensuring our coaches have access to a wide range of up-to-date coaching resources that uphold our club philosophy, and a process that helps them develop and improve their coaching practice. POLICIES & PROCEDURES

Having the appropriate policies and procedures in place is very important to us, and they all play an important role in the running of our club, helping to protect our club members and officers. Parental & Spectator Values Familiarising yourself with our policies, procedures and club philosophy will help you understand what we’re All of our club policy documents can be found via our website: trying to achieve as a club, and we’re confident this will be reflected through our supporters on match day. www.whitleybaysportingclub.co.uk/club-documents Of course, we understand that some parents and spectators may have played to a high level in the past, or previously have been involved as coaches themselves; and we know the excitement of the game can We encourage all club members to familiarise themselves with these at the earliest opportunity. catch out even the most reserved of us, but we do ask all parents and spectators to remind themselves of our club philosophy and policies before considering passing any instructions on to players. Our coaches may be trying new things to help a player develop that might not be obvious straight away, so we ask that your Code of Conduct energies when spectating games are focused on encouraging and supporting your son or daughter, and helping to create a positive match-day environment. The club has a documented code of conduct which covers the following: Win or lose, the most important thing is that your child enjoys their footballing experience and is playing in a • Coaches supportive environment, rather than a hostile, aggressive and pressuring matchday environment. • Players • Spectators We’re proud of our reputation and a lot of that is down to the positivity and encouragement shown from our parents and spectators, towards both teams playing.

Our code of conduct documents need to be acknowledged by parents of younger players, adult players and coaches upon sign up to club membership.

Your Membership Subscription

Please note: In order to represent the club, all players must have a unique Football Identification Number (FAN) from the FA. This is part of a new FA directive where every player affiliated to a club must have a FAN number. This is straightforward to do and can be done in a few minutes via this link: www.thefa.com/account/signup

The FAN number stays with the player for the full time that the player is involved in the game (playing, coaching, refereeing, regardless of club). It’s worth noting that, for young players, it’s preferential if a parent sets up a FAN and the child player is linked to this.

To setup your subscription, go to the membership section of our website at www.whitleybaysportingclub.co.uk and follow the on-screen instructions to set up your subscription for the season. If you have any issues, or are having difficulty accessing, please speak to your coach.

Our hugely popular and successful Whitley Bay Sporting Club Development Centre is our introduction to football and serves as a useful pathway and introduction to the club.

It runs each Saturday morning at Valley Gardens Middle School 3G between 9:00am and 10:00am and is open to boys and girls of any ability, aged 3 to 8.

Every child will experience a stimulating, fun and age-appropriate football learning experience with coaches who specialize in this vital first steps stage.

Our Development Centre is run by Gareth Whittaker and his team of coaches, all of whom are FA qualified and CRC checked.

Our Development Centre has a very informal atmosphere, where kids are encouraged to play football with a smile on their face; and the purpose is to develop the following aspects of a child’s ability:

• Ball Introduction • A child’s first step to gain confidence and experience of playing in a small group. • Ball Confidence • Skills Building • Ball Mastery • Social skills development

More information about our Development Centre can be found on our website www.whitleybaysportingclub.co.uk/saturday-morning-development-centre

Mini soccer is a great introduction to football for young players. At Under 7 and Under 8, matches generally take place at a central venue on artifical grass, where referees are provided by the league, with smaller teams (5v5), ball, pitch sizes and goals. At Under 9 and Under 10, the game increases to 7v7, and games begin to take place more on grass, with referees arranged by team coaches. There is no offside. Our 20 mini soccer teams play their home games on a Sunday at the venues below. The first team - managed by Gary Corney - were promoted last season and now play in the First Division of the Northern Alliance League; whilst our reserve team - which is the natural pathway for a lot of our U17 and U18 players - is managed by Andy Snell and play in the Development Division of the Northern Alliance League.

We encourage all our club members to get along to Churchill Playing Fields on a Saturday to cheer the lads on - both teams have really progressed over the past season and we’re very excited about the season ahead.

Training Defibrillators Although we don’t have a central club house or our own facility (yet), we do have a great working relationship with local schools in the area, which allows all of our teams to train for a minimum of 90 minutes Through a number of recent fundraising events, the club has also managed to source, fund and install each week. defibrillators at the majority of our training and playing venues - something we’re very proud of. Chris Whinham, our Facilities Coordinator, liaises with each of the schools to ensure that there is constant communication between the club and the schools.

At present, all club training is primarily centred around three venues - Valley Gardens Middle School, Whitley Bay High School and Rockliff Rugby Club.

A training timetable is scheduled for the period between October and March, for all our teams, details of which are on the next page. If teams do not require their allocation on a particular day, they should notify the other coaches on our communication network and offer this space to another team as the club still pays the schools for the training slot.

Goalkeeper Training

The club offers free goalkeeper training each week – run by Dale Walker from Actua1ize Goalkeeping, and is an additional session goalkeepers can take to that received with their team during the week. Sessions run on Saturdays for boys (9:00 - 12:00 at Valley Gardens MIddle School) and Sunday for girls (9:00 – 11:00 at Whitley Bay High School). The app ‘Spond’ is used to book places.

Futsal Training

On Tuesday and Wednesday nights at Whitley Bay High School, our younger players can take additional futsal training. These training sessions are an introduction to the game of futsal. Futsal is a faster variant of the game using a weighted ball and sees players have much more ball time than in a standard game, thus helping Improve players’ decision making skills, touches on the ball, developing confidence and creativity, as well as faster reaction times. Before the start of each season, managers can request kit and equipment for the season ahead. The club sets out a minimum standard of kit and equipment that each team is provided with by the club.

What each team gets

Each team is provided with the following:

• Personalized club & training kit • A match ball at the correct size for the age group • Training balls at a ratio of balls to registered players of 1:1 (it is expected that some balls will be re-useable from year to year) • Training cones • A ball net/bag • First aid kit • Two sets of coloured bibs • Coaching tactics white board

All equipment remains the property of the club, but it is each coach’s responsibility to look after the equipment. In the event of any equipment being damaged or lost, this must be reported to the club secretary for record keeping purposes and for any replacements necessary.

Shirts

All teams play in the same Nike kit, with each expected to have a minimum recyclable life of 2 years. This means you should only expect occasional replacement shirts between these ages for new players or sudden growth spurts (in which case the outgrown shirt should be rotated to a smaller player wherever possible).

Playing kit belongs to the club, not the player. If a player leaves the club, the kit must be returned; in the case of a transfer, this will need to have taken place prior to the transfer being sanctioned in accordance with league rules.

All kit which is no longer used by our players is passed to local schools or sent to Africa for children less fortunate than our own. In the last twelve months, we have sent a substantial amount of kit to Kenya, Zambia and, more recently, the Congo.

COLLABORATION

North East meets North West Bay Foodbank

This year, we are pleased to announce a new collaboration with Every year, we encourage our members to support The Bay Foodbank, and generally try to fill Stockport based Poynton FC. a goal with donations of food and sundries which are then donated to those less fortunate over Christmas time. Keep an eye out on our social media pages, where we advertise for support. Poynton FC are one of the fastest growing grassroots clubs in the North West and, as a minimum, the collaboration will see teams from each club play reciprocal friendlies in 2021 with an option to compete in selected tournaments that may be arranged.

The clubs also hope the new connection will enable young players and coaches to stay connected to football with either club should they move to the Newcastle or Manchester areas for further education or career.

A big WBSC welcome to Poynton FC!
