Jane Barcott Administrative Assistant Phyl Booth Administrative Secretary Darline Creen Clerk Specialist III Dear Guests:

I cordially welcome you to this Alaskan conference for the study of violence, al though it is not without mixed emotions. On the one hand, it is indeed unfortunate that we must devote time and resources to dealing with violence-related problems; on the other, it is most encouraging to see the will ingness and dedication with which so many citizens and public officials have volunteered to assist in efforts directed at ultimately reducing violence and its harmful consequences.

Justice Center faculty members have been overwhelmed by the encouragement, cooperation, assistance and support that public and private groups and individu als have provided since we initiated efforts to study violence in Alaska and plan this conference over a year ago. I am certain that during the next three days those of you who have assisted us will recognize the importance of your contributions.

The information we received resulted in this conference being organized around the five central themes of (1) Violent People, (2) Victims of Violence, (3) Methods of Preventing and Controlling Violence, (4) Firearms and Violence, and (5) Research and Public Policy Concerning Violence. Your suggestions have also influenced the conference desi gn, speakers, time and location. Further, based on your suggestions, our staff has arranged for experts from throughout the United States and Canada to join those of you from Alaska in examining, challenging and discussing policy issues, research, programs and service deliv ery related to the themes. We are confident the interaction in the program will contribute to the development of more responsible and effective efforts toward reducing violence and eliminating the problems it creates in Alaska,

All of us associated with the conference are proud of the program and the arrangements made for your benefit, We are particularly grateful to Knowlton Johnson and Sharon Rafferty and their Program Group who have worked in an excep tionally diligent and efficient fashion to guarantee the success of this endeavor, They join with the rest of the Justice Center staff, the University of Alaska, Anchorage administrators and me in wishing you a productive and valuable series of sessions.

PROGRAM INFORMATION

PURPOSE In organizing the Conference, it was assumed that violence is a critical, multi-faceted problem, and that up-to-date information is needed in con trolling and preventing the many types of violent acts. These underlying assumptions lead to this event which has a twofold purpose: to disseminate recent information about a wide range of violence-related problems and to pro vide a forum for people to meet others who deal with these problems in Alaska.

CONFERENCE STRUCTURE This Conference has been designed to address numerous topics on violence. General Sessions have been developed to disseminate information about each of the five themes of the Conference which was mentioned in the Justice Center Director's opening letter. Concurrent panels have also been organized to pro vide registrants with a choice of topics.

Various session-specific formats are being used to facilitate information dissemination. Some sessions center on panel speakers who have been asked to prepare a short presentation that focuses on topics concerning violence. Special attention is given in these presentations to information about violence related research and programs operating in Alaska and elsewhere. other sessions are designed around principal speakers who will make a presentation, with com mentators reacting to the speaker's remarks. Another format being used is to have panelists respond to questions asked by moderators. Notably in all sessions, the audience will have an opportunity to ask questions.

EVALUATION Your assessment of the 1982 Conference on Violence is especially important to the Justice Center. With this in mind, you are encouraged to complete the evaluation form which is included in the Conference packet. There will be baskets located outside of the Conference rooms in which to leave your completed form. SCHEDULE AT A GLANCE
