On the one hand, it is indeed unfortunate that we must devote time and resources to dealing with violence-related problems; on the other, it is most encouraging to see the will ingness and dedication with which so many citizens and public officials have volunteered to assist in efforts directed at ultimately reducing violence and its harmful consequences. Justice Center faculty members have been overwhelmed by the encouragement, cooperation, assistance and support that public and private groups and individu als have provided since we initiated efforts to study violence in Alaska and plan this conference over a year ago. I am certain that during the next three days those of you who have assisted us will recognize the importance of your contributions. The information we received resulted in this conference being organized around the five central themes of (1) Violent People, (2) Victims of Violence, (3) Methods of Preventing and Controlling Violence, (4) Firearms and Violence, and (5) Research and Public Policy Concerning Violence. Your suggestions have also influenced the conference desi gn, speakers, time and location. Further, based on your suggestions, our staff has arranged for experts from throughout the United States and Canada to join those of you from Alaska in examining, challenging and discussing policy issues, research, programs and service deliv ery related to the themes. We are confident the interaction in the program will contribute to the development of more responsible and effective efforts toward reducing violence and eliminating the problems it creates in Alaska, All of us associated with the conference are proud of the program and the arrangements made for your benefit, We are particularly grateful to Knowlton Johnson and Sharon Rafferty and their Program Group who have worked in an excep tionally diligent and efficient fashion to guarantee the success of this endeavor, They join with the rest of the Justice Center staff, the University of Alaska, Anchorage administrators and me in wishing you a productive and valuable series of sessions.
