I additio to aalsig Elto Johs usial stle, the appoah take ill itself be assessed to ascertain whether it can be beneficial for future research into popular music. The introductory chapter defines the key concepts and considers who or what Elton John is. With a career spanning over 45 years and in excess of 300 million albums sold, Elton John is a major popular music artist. However, the Elton John brand is not confined to popular music records. Elton John has been involved with films and stage shows, and he is a celebrity as well as a popular music star. Issues relating to gender have been relevant to Elton John throughout his career and provide appropriate contextualisation for an analysis of his musical style. These extramusical aspects are discussed in the to haptes folloig the itodutio, ad thei ipat upo Elto Johs ole as a popula usi atist is osideed. Fou peiods of Elto Johs usi aee hae ee idetified, ad a ase stud from each period follows the chapters concerning gender and related issues and stardom and celebrity. Each case study draws upon established methods of music analysis, and evaluates elements of the music such as instrumentation, melody, and harmony, as well as instrumentation and how the listener interacts with the music. Both the recording and a sheet music score are used as the musical text. Their use is dependent upon which is most suitable for the specific analysis task. A range of computer software is used to produce quantitatie data aout Elto Johs usial stle, and this complements the analysis undertaken using more traditional methods. The interdisciplinary approach taken enables an Elton John formula for writing pop songs to be devised. The thesis concludes by exaiig ho Elto Johs usial stle a e itepeted i light of the ultual issues highlighted, the effectiveness of an interdisciplinary approach, and how this research is situated within the wider popular music field. 3 Dedication This thesis is dedicated to the memory of five people who have made a tremendous impact upon my life.     ove for thought Pre - K & K Integrated Physical Activities in the Early Learning Environment M ove for Thought Pre-K & K The Move for Thought Pre-K & K (M4T pre-K & K) was developed mainly for children (3-6 years old) in the preschool environment. However, all activities are developmentally appropriate for children in kindergarten classroom. Iowa Team Nutrition and the Iowa Department of Education would like to thank you for using the M4T pre-K & K program. The M4T pre-K & K program can be used to assist in: meeting physical activity needs, improving physical literacy and fundamental gross motor skills, developing the “whole child”, by practicing physical, cognitive, social, and emotional skills. The kit was developed by Spyridoula Vazou, PhD, Department of Kinesiology, Iowa State University. The activities and supporting files were developed by Dr. Vazou and Jacqueline Krogh, M.S., Department of Human Development & Family Studies, Iowa State University.     YOUNG AMERICANS TO EMOTIONAL RESCUE: SELECTING MEETINGS BETWEEN DISCO AND ROCK, 1975-1980 Daniel Kavka A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF MUSIC August 2010 Committee: Jeremy Wallach, Advisor Katherine Meizel © 2010 Daniel Kavka All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Jeremy Wallach, Advisor Disco-rock, composed of disco-influenced recordings by rock artists, was a sub-genre of both disco and rock in the 1970s. Seminal recordings included: David Bowie’s Young Americans; The Rolling Stones’ “Hot Stuff,” “Miss You,” “Dance Pt.1,” and “Emotional Rescue”; KISS’s “Strutter ’78,” and “I Was Made For Lovin’ You”; Rod Stewart’s “Do Ya Think I’m Sexy“; and Elton John’s Thom Bell Sessions and Victim of Love. Though disco-rock was a great commercial success during the disco era, it has received limited acknowledgement in post-disco scholarship. This thesis addresses the lack of existing scholarship pertaining to disco-rock. It examines both disco and disco-rock as products of cultural shifts during the 1970s. Disco was linked to the emergence of underground dance clubs in New York City, while disco-rock resulted from the increased mainstream visibility of disco culture during the mid seventies, as well as rock musicians’ exposure to disco music. My thesis argues for the study of a genre (disco-rock) that has been dismissed as inauthentic and commercial, a trend common to popular music discourse, and one that is linked to previous debates regarding the social value of pop music.

Affirms Elton John Win In 'Nikita' Copyright Row By David McAfee Law360, New York (July 17, 2013, 4:21 PM ET) -- The Seventh Circuit on Wednesday shot down a bid by a South African lyricist to revive a copyright suit accusing Elton John of stealing the words to the song "Nikita," holding that the two songs aren't substantially similar as a matter of law. The decision comes after photojournalist and aspiring songwriter Guy Hobbs told the Seventh Circuit in March that an Illinois judge's dismissal relied on a Seventh Circuit decision that contradicted U.S. Supreme Court precedent and effectively eliminated copyright protection. Hobbs argued that Peters v. West, the 2011 Seventh Circuit ruling cited by U.S. District Judge Amy J. St. Eve in her October dismissal, defies Supreme Court precedent establishing copyright protection when an author creates an original work by arranging unprotected elements. But the three-judge appellate panel on Wednesday affirmed Judge St. Eve's decision in favor of John, his writing partner Bernie Taupin and publisher Big Pig Music, saying that Hobbs' song "Natasha" and Elton John's "Nikita" aren’t similar enough to support the copyright infringement claim. "We agree with the district court that 'Natasha' and 'Nikita' simply tell different stories, and are separated by much more than small cosmetic differences," Circuit Judge Daniel A. Manion wrote in the opinion. "We conclude that as a matter of law 'Natasha' and 'Nikita' are not substantially similar because they do not share enough unique features to give rise to a breach of the duty not to copy another's work." Hobbs, a resident of Cape Town, South Africa, brought suit in April 2012, saying he based the lyrics for the unpublished 1982 song "Natasha" on a love affair he had with a Russian waitress while working as a photographer aboard the Russian cruise ship MS Taras Shevchenko.

    Jan 12 #1 Scuttlebutt from the Spermaceti Press Sherlockians (and Holmesians) gathered in New York to celebrate the Great Detective's 158th birthday during the long weekend from Jan. 11 to Jan. 15. The festivities began with the traditional ASH Wednesday dinner sponsored by The Adventuresses of Sherlock Holmes at O'Casey's and continued with the Christopher Morley Walk led by Jim Cox and Dore Nash on Thursday morning, followed by the usual lunch at McSorley's). The Baker Street Irregulars' Distinguished Speaker at the Midtown Executive Club on Thursday evening was Dr. Lisa Sanders, author of a "Diagnosis" col- umn for the N.Y. Times and the technical advisor for the television series "House, M.D."; the title of her talk was "Is Holmes Crazy As a Fox, or Just Plain Crazy?", and you will be able to read her paper in the next issue of The Baker Street Journal. The William Gillette Luncheon at Moran's was well attended, as always, and featured Donny Zaldin and Hartley Nathan in a Sherlockian "Carnac the Mag- nificent" skit and the Friends of Bogie's at Baker Street (Paul Singleton, Sarah Montague, and Andrew Joffe) in a Sherlockian tribute to the centenary of the sinking of the Titanic. The luncheon also was the occasion for Al Gregory's presentation of the annual Jan Whimsey award (named in memory of his wife Jan Stauber) for the most whimsical piece in The Serpentine Muse last year; the winner (Karen Murdock, author of "Do You Write Like Arthur Conan Doyle?") received a certificate and a check for the Canonical sum of $221.17.
