OOS~Ho 10U-00/11 Section number _7__ Page _1__ CRIPTION Located on northeast corner Charlotte, the b 500 North Tryon on the _ northwest is by Eighth Street on lot approximately SO by 157 feet is on northeast; parking lot, approlimately 40 feet by 100 feet is behind the rear elevation (see attached survey map). Tryon which runs and southwest, along with the intersecting Street, are streets of central Charlotte. Historically and in present, they almost all the major non-manufacturing commercial buildings of the city. From Eighth Street northward, which includes the block containing the building at 500 North Tryon Street, almost all of the buildings on Tryon Street are one, two and three stories tall, and are mostly smal1 commercial businesses. Southward on Tryon Street from the intersection of Eighth Street, the buHdings vary in size from small commercial buildings to multi-story skyscrapers for about eight blocks. Other notable features in the immediate area include: across Eighth Street southward from SOD North Tryon is the multi-story Hall House, which is now housing for the elderly (formerly the Barringer Hotel); and directly across Tryon Street is the First United Methodist Church. The enframed window wall building at sao North Tryon Street is two stories tall with full basement and has load-bearing brick walls laid in one­ to-sil com mon bond. Rectangular in plan, it measures approximately 46 feet in width and 146 feet in depth. The facade features ochre decorative brick,

    Mayor’s Committee on Race Relationships In 1960, Mayor James Saxon Smith formed a Mayor’s Friendly Relationship Committee in response to sit-ins at various lunch counters in uptown Charlotte’s department, variety and drugstores on February 12, 1960. He appointed Dr. John R. Cunningham to chair the committee. Cunningham served as President of Davidson College and later served as the Director of the Presbyterian Foundation of Charlotte. Originally, the MFRC was designed as a temporary committee to resolve the integration of the lunch counters which was successful by the summer of 1960. However, at the urging of Dr. Cunningham and other civic and religious leaders the work of the committee continued and expanded to explore issues of housing, education equal opportunities for work as well as crime and the impact that segregation had in these areas. At this same time, the Civil Rights Movement began spreading throughout the country and especially in the south. In 1961, when Mayor Stan Brookshire became Mayor, the name of the committee became the Mayor’s Community Relations Committee. Twenty-seven people, both black and white, served on the committee which was comprised of newspaper editors, local politicians, ministers, physicians, four women, teachers and local businessmen. This collection contains letters to and from Dr. John R. Cunningham, who chaired the committee, memorandums, committee minutes and pamphlets on the subject of race relationship that were used by the committee in developing their awareness of the issue. This collection contains important information regarding the city’s changing attitudes towards integration and the impact these changes had on the community.

(Under the direction of DR. CHERYL HICKS) Sustained gay activism in Charlotte, North Carolina, only emerged in response to the HIV AIDS epidemic. Community building among Charlotte’s closeted gays and lesbians began in the 1970s with the emergence of safe spaces, particularly gay bars. However, before the mid 1980s, activism was intermittent, largely inward facing, and suffered from over-reliance on a few leaders. As the reality of AIDS gripped the community after 1985, two imperatives created by the epidemic gave rise to sustained gay and lesbian activism. First, the critical need to provide care for people suffering from AIDS galvanized the gay community into action and led to the creation of the Metrolina AIDS Project (MAP). MAP became the first outward looking and visible gay organization in Charlotte, and, critically, it enjoyed a degree of civic legitimacy. However, this civic legitimacy did not extend to the second imperative, the more contentious terrain of AIDS education. In this arena Charlotte’s gay activists came into conflict with the Religious Right and the county government, which forced activists to become more politically organized.

Charlotte Historic District Commission - two vacancies Charlotte/Mecklenburg Historic Properties Commission - two vacancies INTRODUCTION REMARKS. Mayor Harris introduced the individual Councilmembers and the Executive Staff to the audience, and expressed appreciation for the opportunity to ~~ct in District Five.
