Brisbane-Based Alchemia Merge with Melbourne-Based Meditech
www.asiabiotech.com Industry Watch Australia Brisbane-based Alchemia Merge with Melbourne-based Meditech Brisbane-based biotech firm, Alchemia, and Melbourne-based Meditech Research are to merge via an off-market takeover bid by Alchemia for Meditech that values the latter company at A$16.9 million (US$12.4 million). The companies said that by joining forces, they would create a substantial drug development company with an extensive pipeline of products, a strong financial position and an experienced management team. The companies also said that the merger would bring together two companies with technology platforms based on carbohydrates. Alchemia's chemistry expertise would complement Meditech's biology expertise. Meditech's strong preclinical and clinical expertise would accelerate the development of Alchemia's drug discovery opportunities. Alchemia chief executive officer, Tracie Ramsdale, said that the combined group would have exceptional people, a high-quality product pipeline and innovative technology. "The Alchemia board believes Meditech will be an excellent addition to Alchemia's growing drug development and discovery portfolio," Ramsdale said. Alchemia will offer Meditech shareholders one Alchemia share for every nine Meditech shares, valuing Meditech at A$16.9 million (US$12.4 million) based on Alchemia's 30-day volume- weighted average price of A$1.207 (US$0.885). The merger proposal has the unanimous support of Meditech directors, who intend to recommend the offer to Meditech shareholders in the absence of a superior proposal. All directors who hold Meditech shares or options will accept Alchemia's offer in respect of their shareholdings and option holdings in the absence of a superior proposal. -

Safer school travel for Runcorn Students at Runcorn Heights State Primary School have received a school travel safety boost after Council completed works as part of the Safe School Travel program. The school has a high percentage of students who walk, cycle, carpool and catch public transport to school. Council recently installed pedestrian safety islands at the school crossing on Nemies Road to improve safety for students and their parents and guardians.The final design of the improvement was decided after consultation with both the school and residents in the area and was delivered with the Queensland Government’s Department of Transport and Main Roads. Council’s Safe School Travel program has operated since 1991 to improve safety across Brisbane’s road network, including children’s daily commute to and from school. Adrian Schrinner Lord Mayor MEDIA RELEASE Community consultation kicks off for new bridges Brisbane is one step closer to five new bridges taking cars off the road and giving people a new way to travel, with Brisbane City Council now seeking community feedback on the transformational $550 million plan. Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said he had a vision for a cleaner, greener and more active Brisbane and these new bridges would tackle traffic congestion by improving cross-river public and active transport connections. “These five bridges will transform Brisbane and make us an active, healthy and better connected city,” he said. “My very first act as Lord Mayor was to announce this plan and I am now handing the planning over the people of Brisbane as we want to hear the community’s thoughts on the proposed alignment of the bridges. “The community is crucial in the planning and delivery of these five bridges, as this infrastructure will transform the way residents and visitors get around Brisbane. “The business case for the first bridge, a pedestrian bridge connecting Kangaroo Point to the CBD, outlined that the bridge would result in 83,950 fewer car trips using river crossings each year. “With the preliminary business case for the Kangaroo Point Bridge now complete, it’s time to start planning for the other for cross-river connections. “Brisbane currently has more than 2.2 million residents and 1300 people move to our great city each month. “We know Brisbane is a great place to live, work and relax and these bridges are critical infrastructure to ensure as Brisbane grows, we remain a well-connected city.” Cr Schrinner said community consultation would run from November 11 to 6 December and would include a variety of ways for people to have their say, including 12 information sessions. -

When thinking of Brisbane , consider: *The city of Brisbane itself, which has 1.7 million inhabitants in the region. One interesting category of shop sells aboriginal arts from the state. As you walk around the city, you see statues and small parks, such as a monument to Queen Victoria . The city lies in a sub-tropical environment, with the October spring iparticularly colorful because purple jacaranda trees bloom lavishly. Queenslanders often build their houses on stilts for greater air flow, flood control, and termite or dry rot prevention. *The Gold Coast, the 19-mile beach playground starting 39 miles south of Brisbane . The so-called Gold Coast ranks as one of the great beach areas of the world. Extensive development of hotels, especially by the Japanese, occurs at Surfer’s Paradise , including one of the largest hotels in Australia , the Conrad International. Swimming and sunning at Gold Coast Beaches rivals the experience of Hawaii or the Caribbean . Surfers Paradise is well known as Australia ‘s longest topless swimming area. -

Even today cross-river ferries play a leading role in getting residents across a wide and fast flowing river. The first bridge over any part of the Brisbane River was a (primarily) wooden one opened in 1865 to carry pedestrians and carts between South and North Brisbane, approximately where the Victoria Bridge is today.1 Made of Stringy Bark it survived termite attacks for only two years, and then it was back to the ferries. -

The Draft Brisbane City Centre Master Plan 2013 has been developed to ensure we capitalise on this vast potential and seize today’s opportunities. Brisbane’s economy is predicted to double over the next 20 years, with demand for office, retail, residential and hotel space in the city centre expected to equate to around 50 new towers.
