ABSTRACT STRUCTURAL CONTROLS ON EXTENSIONAL-BASIN DEVELOPMENT TRIASSIC ISCHIGUALASTO FORMATION, NW ARGENTINA By Kristin Guthrie This thesis reports the results of a structural and stratigraphic field study of the Ischigualasto Formation in the Ischigualasto Basin, NW Argentina. Previous stratigraphic investigations have documented an along-strike increase in Ischigualasto Formation thickness of ~275 m over a distance of 7 km. While this thickness change has been attributed to syndepositional faulting, the exact location and characteristics of controlling faults have never been documented. In order to determine the influence of fault-related accommodation development on thickness variations in the Ischigualasto Formation a detailed structural mapping project was conducted in the eastern part of the basin. Field mapping identified two groups of intrabasinal normal faults with near perpendicular strike azimuths. These fault orientations, and their calculated extension directions, are best explained by the development of basin-margin perpendicular release faults coupled with normal-sense reactivation of preexisting basement structures. Calculation of cumulative observed displacements along intrabasinal normal faults in the study area, however, revealed a negligible contribution to accommodation. The presence of interpreted release faults in the study area, however, suggests that observed changes in Ischigualasto Formation thickness were controlled by a northwest increase in basin- bounding fault displacement during the time of deposition. MANCUSO1, Oscar F. GALLEGO2 and Rafael G. MARTINS-NETO3 Abstract. In the Bermejo Basin, the Los Rastros Formation bears an abundant insect fauna, mainly with terrestrial adult winged organisms related to the Blattoptera and the Coleoptera orders. The insect re- mains are found in the black shales of the offshore lacustrine facies and the insect taphonomic features suggest that the specimens were allochthonous to the lake. The individuals appear to arrived alive to the lake and suffered a rapid fall through the water column thus, preserving them intact, and some of them suffered fragmentation in air transportation and by biological attack during long periods of flotation. Resumen. LA FAUNA DE INSECTOS TRIÁSICOS DE LA FORMACIÓN LOS RASTROS (CUENCA BERMEJO), PROVINCIA DE LA RIOJA (ARGENTINA): SU CONTEXTO, TAFONOMÍA Y PALEOBIOLOGÍA. En la Cuenca Bermejo, la Formación Los Rastros es portadora de una abundante fauna de insectos, principalmente organismos adultos terrestres y alados pertenecientes a los órdenes Blattoptera y Coleoptera. Los restos de insectos son encontrados en las pelitas negras de la facies de lago abierto. Las características tafonómicas de los insectos sugieren que los especímenes son alóctonos al lago. Los individuos pudieron llegar vivos al lago y sufrir una rápida caída a través de la columna de agua, preservándose intactos, o sufrieron fragmentación en el transporte aéreo y por ataques biológicos durante largos períodos de flotación. -

I tend to focus a bit more on sedimentary processes then they do mostly because we live in an area that is dominated by sedimentation and I figure that you should be as familiar as possible with the subject. As it turns out, the web notes are also more comprehensive than what you'll find in your text book A) Depositional/sedimentary environments Last time we met, we discussed how sediment moved from one place to another. Remember that sediment is produced in a lot of different locations, but it seldom stays where it is produced. The action of water, wind and ice transport it from the sediment source to the sediment sink. The variety of sediment sinks that exist on the planet is truly amazing. There are river basins, lakes, deserts, lagoons, swamps, deltas, beaches, barrier islands, reefs, continental shelves, the abyssal plains (very deep!), trenches (even deeper!) etc. As we discussed last time, these places are called depositional environments (also known as sedimentary environments). Each depositional environment may also have several subdivisions. For example, there are open beaches, sheltered beaches, shingle beaches, sand beaches, strandline beaches, even mud beaches. -

Soronnadi2 1Department of Geology, University of Port Harcourt, Port Harcourt, Nigeria 2Department of Geology, Niger Delta University, Wilberforce Island, Yenagoa, Bayelsa Nigeria ______________________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT The continental to deltaic Asu River Group in the Afikpo basin, south-eastern Nigeria, is mainly composed of arkosic sandstones with minor proportion of volcanic rock fragments and calcareous subarkosic sandstones. The arkosic sandstones are cemented mainly by calcite with minor quartz cement; while the calcareous sandstones have calcite as major cements. Petrographically, the sandstones and calcareous sandstones can be divided into four facies: the basal conglomerate to coarse grained sandstones, medium-fine grained sandstones deposited in a fluvial non-marine environment; calcareous siltstones and calcareous subarkosic sandstones. The calcareous sandstones are bioclastic grainstones and packstones respectively deposited in a estuarine to shallow shelf marine environment. Petrographic investigations indicate that diagenetic processes which have modified the Awi and Awe Formations respectively include micritization, cementation, dissolution, neomorphism and compaction. The calcareous sandstones have undergone diagenetic alteration under low temperatures and pressures. Alteration started with pore-space reduction by compaction and was followed by pore-filling cement. Dissolution at the surface, however, has caused secondary porosity. The sandstones have a lower porosity due to a higher degree of cementation. The higher porosity in the calcareous sandstones is due to dissolution of feldspars; and are better sorted and more loosely packed. -

Texas 78711 ii ABSTRACT Regional differences in the porosity and permeability of the Edwards aquifer are related to three major depositional areas, the Maverick basin, the Devils River trend, and the San Marcos platform, that existed during Early Cretaceous time. The rocks of the Maverick basin are predominantly deep basinal deposits of dense, homogeneous mudstones of low primary porosity. Permeability is principally associated with cavernous voids in the upper part of the Salmon Peak Formation in the Maverick basin. The rocks of the Devils River trend are a complex of marine and supratidal deposits in the lower part and reefal or inter-reefal deposits in the upper part. Permeable zones, which occur in the upper part ofthe trend, are associated with collapse breccias and rudist reefs. -

Box 330440, 28334 Bremen, Germany Received 1 December 2003; accepted 1 August 2005 Abstract Middle–Late Miocene marine incursions are known from several foreland basin systems adjacent to the Andes, likely a result of combined foreland basin loading and sea-level rising. The equivalent formation in the southern Bolivian Chaco foreland Basin is the Middle–Late Miocene (14–7 Ma) Yecua Formation. New lithological and paleontological data permit a reconstruction of the facies and depositional environment. These data suggest a coastal setting with humid to semiarid floodplains, shorelines, and tidal and restricted shallow marine environments. The marine facies diminishes to the south and west, suggesting a connection to the Amazon Basin. However, a connection to the Paranense Sea via the Paraguayan Chaco Basin is also possible. q 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved. A string of extensive Tertiary foreland basins east of the Marine incursions during the Miocene also are known from Andes is interpreted to record Andean shortening, uplift, and several intracontinental basins in South America (Hoorn, lithospheric loading (Flemings and Jordan, 1989).
