Director's Notes When David Rabe returned to the U.S. in 1970, he was scarred from his years as a hospital assistant in Viet Nam. It was his "un-Welcome Home," however, that tortured the young writer and led to the creation of Sticks and Bones. Appalled by the cold, shallow, apathetic attitude of the society that sent his generation to Viet Nam but which could not cope with the results of the War , his rage and pain poured out into three plays: Sticks and Bones, then The Basic Training of Pavlo Hummel and . To me the value of Sticks and Bones lies not merely in the presentation of one man's experiences or even in the chronicling of a painful piece of Amer CITY NATIONAL BANK ican history. It is a play that forces us to examine our most hallowed OF AUSTIN institutions-the family, the Church , and the government. Rabe offers no 9th and Congress solutions in this play. He only demands that we briefly share his unique A FIRST CITY BANCORPORAT!ON MEMBER vision of the American Dream. Some may find his caustic indictment of MEMBER FDIC© 1981FCBOT society shocking. Others may find his insights profound . Some may laugh and some cringe. It is a play about people not com'municating that I hope will communicate! S.L.
