Yet it is only by understanding the ingredients involved in our past year’s performance (see pages 54–55)— preceded by a dozen years of growth and innovation (see pages 52–53)— that one can understand why the Atlantic Council has so successfully negotiated the historic disruptions of 2020. The pages that follow, the Atlantic Council’s Annual Report for 2019, capture what may have been the most successful year in the Atlantic Council’s six-decade existence. SHAPING THE GLOBAL FUTURE TOGETHER First, the short version of our mission statement, “shaping the global future together,” is only five words long, but those words express a world of meaning. “Shaping” speaks to the results-ori- ented nature of how we operate. With approximately 70 percent of the world’s known oil reserves, Gulf countries, including Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Iran and Iraq, are the world’s leading petroleum exporters. Gulf oil exports (and, therefore, world oil prices) are largely governed by the political and economic dynamics of the Gulf region – suggesting that U.S. leaders have a substantial stake in understanding these dynamics generally and, specifically, how they impact U.S. energy security concerns. Oil plays a key role in U.S. energy security, providing approximately 40 percent of the total annual energy use of the United States (measured in trillion Btu). Indeed, the United States is the world’s number one consumer of oil, using 20 million barrels of oil per day, or one-fifth of the world total. Of these 20 million barrels, the United States imports 9 million, as its domestic production is insufficient to satisfy the country’s needs. This brief addresses four fundamental questions regarding the current and likely future energy needs of the United States. 1. Is the United States “dependent” on Arab/Gulf oil? At the time of its certification in June 2019, the new IOC Headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland, received the highest rating of any of the LEED v4-certified new construction project. This was only possible thanks to the PV system consisting of 614 mono-Si modules, amounting to 179 kWp and covering 999 m2 of the roof’s surface. The approximately 200 MWh solar power generated per year are used in-house for heat pumps, HVAC systems, lighting and general building operations. The reason the social web is sometimes called the “wild west” is that we’re still working out the kinks of how best to communicate with one another online. The rules of conduct may not be set in stone, but the social web isn’t a total free-for-all either. You should be aware of some key, often mystifying, communi- cations protocols before striking up conversations with the locals. Think of this chapter as finishing school for Internet communication. We will run through a variety of communications techniques here, but if you take one lesson from this chapter, take this: Listen first. Thankfully, nearly all new influencer communications occur in the Internet’s public forum, so you can adopt an anthropological approach. By emulating the influencers’ behavior and learning their dialect, you can be confident when you approach them.
