Astroneer is a survival exploration adventure game set in outer space, where players navigate through the solar system whilst making new discoveries and inhabiting planets. Along the way, they must survive the dangerous environments that the space environment brings and can work with other players in multiplayer mode to build equipment such as vehicles and bases to aid them on their journey. Following its release on 16th December 2016, the game has received mixed reviews with a rating of 9/10 on steam and just 71% on Metacritic. Whilst players are enthusiastic about its visuals and multi-player gameplay, some have been critical of the game’s optimisation and buggy menu system. Astroneer was developed by System Era Softworks ad published by Gearbox publishing, also known for games such as Borderlands and Battleborn. The game is run on Unreal Engine and is available to play on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Microsoft Windows. Save Location. The Save Location for Astroneer varies based on the platform you're using to play the game: Steam or Microsoft Store. See help specific to your setup below. Steam. If you're playing Astroneer on Steam, you can find your save game files at this path: To access that path, just paste it into the address bar in File Explorer: Microsoft Store. To access your saves from the Microsoft store version of the game it's a little bit trickier than on Steam, but still relatively easy. You can find them at this path: %LocalAppData% > Packages > SystemEraSoftworks followed by random text > wgs > a folder that has a random name (random letters and numbers) > another folder with a random name. Go into the wgs folder, and then into a folder that has a long name of random letters and numbers. Narrative-dramatic agency in Disco Elysium (2019) and Astroneer (2019) https://doi.org/10.1515/fns-2020-0012 Abstract: Drawing on Janet Murray (1997), Katie Salen and Eric Zimmerman (2004), and other previous proposals, this article conceptualizes player agency as the possibility space for “meaningful” choice expressed via player action that translates into avatar action, afforded and constrained by a videogame’s design. It further distinguishes between four core dimensions of agency thus conceptu- alized: First, spatial-explorative agency is afforded by those elements of a video- game’s design that determine the player’s ability to navigate and traverse the game spaces via their avatar. Second, temporal-ergodic agency is afforded by those elements of a videogame’s design that determine the player’s options for interacting with the videogame as a temporal system. Third, configurative-con- structive agency is afforded by those elements of a videogame’s design that allow the player to configure their avatar and/or (re)construct the game spaces. Fourth, narrative-dramatic agency is afforded by those elements of a videogame’s design that determine the player’s “meaningful” impact on the unfolding story. The arti- cle then moves on to analyze two case studies of independently developed video- games: ZA/UM’s role-playing game Disco Elysium (2019), whose complex non- linear narrative structure primarily affords configurative and narrative agency, and System Era Softworks’s sandbox adventure game Astroneer (2019), whose procedurally generated game spaces and “open” game mechanics primarily af- ford explorative, constructive, and dramatic agency.
