Liewe vriende

Ons is so pas deur ‘n ordentlike hoëveldse donderstorm, en alles is mooi skoon gewas… Ons het terselfdertyd ook so bietjie afgekoel.

Ek hoop julle het almal lekker gerus en is vol moed om alle UFO’s en PHD’s weg te werk hierdie jaar. Ek het darem al sover gekom om die naaldwerkkamer reg te pak, en op ‘n hele paar totaal vergete projekte afgekom. Ek daag julle uit om teen die Oktober vergadering te kom spog met julle voltooide UFO’s... Wie weet daar is dalk ‘n prys vir die een wat die meeste klaargemaak het!

Ons het ‘n baie besige jaar wat voorlê met ons feesverantwoordelikhede en ons eie opwindende agenda vol interessante praatjies, klasse en demo’s. Ons tema vir die jaar is ‘How do I…’, met die fokus op die ontwerp (waar begin mens om jou eie kwilt te ontwerp), maak (verskeie demo’s en ‘tips’ by hierdie een, moet dit nie misloop nie!) en afwerking van ‘n kwilt sodat dit skougehalte kan wees. Ons gaan ook lekker stikdae hê, die datums is in hierdie uitgawe. Hou ook ons FB blad dop vir verdere inligting.

Ons gaan hierdie jaar baie op ons lede se ondersteuning staatmaak om ons aangewese feesportefeuljes suksesvol te bedryf, so wees asseblief gereed om bietjie terug te ploeg en dit ‘n hoogtepunt op die kalender te maak. Ek sien uit daarna om vir oulaas hierdie jaar ‘n begeesterde komitee en gewillige lede aan my sy te hê. Kom ons maak hom so lekker dat verlede jaar jaloers en volgende jaar bang is. 

National Quilt Festival 2019

National Quilt Festival 2019 The JQG will be responsible for the Exhibition and the Competition Portfolios at the National Quilt Festival 2019. Your voluntary help will be very much appreciated. Please contact Claire Wallace [email protected] if you are able to help with the following Exhibition Portfolio tasks: Preparation  Planning provisional and final layout of quilts (Provisional layout in May 2019, Final in July 2019). Any members/family members who are architects, engineers or quantity surveyors can really help here.  Printing of labels (info to be supplied by Competition portfolio team)  Cutting of Laths for hanging (to correct length per entry quilt, labelled and stored per category. Hanging exhibition  Hanging team (at least 12 people) – 10 x husbands/students/people willing to climb ladders, 2 x co-ordinators (2-3 day’s work). During Exhibition Time  White Glove Duty: 4-6 people per shift. 2-3 hour shifts for the duration of the exhibition.  Door Duty: 1-2 people per shift. 2-3 hour shifts for the duration of the exhibition. Returning quilts  Take Down team – 8 people willing to climb ladders. Arrange for correct packaging materials to be placed by each quilt and drop quilts down onto sheets below each hanging space. Assist Hand back team to collect required quilts.  Hand back team – 6-8 people to hand back quilts to authorised people along with packaging materials and critique sheets.

Goody bag gifts The goody bags at Quilt Festival 2019 will contain Vendor Vouchers to encourage quilters to visit all the vendors. Traditional “goody bag gifts” will be handed out during the classes. Sets of 20 “goody bag gifts” will be much appreciated and can be handed in at the Friendship Meeting’s Information Table. This is always a fun home group project to make. You are also welcome to make small single items, or just a few of a kind, for spot prizes that will be handed out during classes. Please make arrangements with Erla for delivery if completed after the Friendship meeting.

6. Inspiration: How do I… start my quilt design The Silicon Valley Modern Quilt Guild (MQG) made a collaborative quilt for QuiltCon 2018. They wanted to design a quilt that transitions from traditional to modern. The inspiration to their design was the traditional Orchard block. They decided that the overall design would include making the blocks start off in its traditional layout in the upper left, gradually transition to modern prints and, finally, break down into solid free-form blocks in the lower right. They were happy to see the transition in fabric, tone and movement within the overall quilt and think it speaks to the prompt of Modern Traditionalism. 7. 2019 Workshops and Demonstrations - Laetitia Cilliers -

In an attempt to reach as wide as possible quilting community, our guild will again offer various workshops and demos this year. Join us. Challenge yourself to try something new; to make new quilty friends and learn new skills. This is a safe community in which to venture out of your comfort zone.

9 Feb. Demo - Sew crumb blocks that can springboard you into a new quilt design Susara van Wyk is very accomplished at sewing crumb blocks. She collects all her scraps in a bag, and when she wants to do a bit of mindless sewing, she makes crumb blocks. These are collected over time and made into beautiful quilts. She will demonstrate her technique at the upcoming meeting. Example of Crumb blocks:

9 Feb. Class fee is R140 per member and R280 for non-members. The class members will get an opportunity to work with the Handi Quilter Sweet Sixteen sit-down quilting machine.

9 Feb. Workshop after the meeting – Jenny Hearn Fibre work artist, Jenny Hearn, will be teaching a 3hour workshop on design principles. It will be a combination of discussions and practical design exercises with fabrics which can then be stitched at home. Jenny will also be sharing valuable guidelines by which she judges art quilts. Book with [email protected] as soon as possible. Class fee is R140 per member and R280 for non-members.

16 March National Quilters Day - “Be a Quilting Buddy” As a guild we are creating an opportunity on National Quilters’ day to help ensure a rich continued history of quilting. We invite you to be a Quilting Buddy: If you have a friend who can sew and has shown the slightest interest in quilting, bring her, your equipment and some basic supplies along to Lynwood Trinity Church on 16 March 9:00 – 16:00. A team of passionate teachers including Erla Cilliers and Tracy Jackson will cover the absolute basics to introduce new comers to the art of quilting.

They will discuss understanding fabric, show students how to master the skill of cutting fabric and teach the very basics of piecing by machine and hand. The students will finish a small project of nine patch blocks and hexagons. This will be a generous sharing day celebrating our craft and the quilting community.

For some this introduction might be daunting or overwhelming and the buddy can lend the necessary emotional (and unpicking support) with an emphatic smile. The buddy has to bring some hand sewing to keep her occupied. We trust the quilting bug to do its work! There are no class fees,

but you need to register and bring a lunch to share. A donation towards our National Festival 2019 fund will be highly appreciated.

1 June Workshop - Introduction to Improvisational Quilting We are putting together an improvisational workshop for Saturday 1 June. Corrianne van Velze, Laetitia Cilliers and Shanida Arnoldi will challenge you to put on your creative hat, put away your rulers, templates, quilt rule book, calculators, inner critic and have fun. As soon as we have finalised the various techniques to be covered and made our sampler, we will send a newsflash. Save the date! Venue: Lynnwood Trinity Church from 8:30 – 16:00. Dis al meer as tien jaar dat die Silver Lake Dollas bestaan! Hierdie huisgroep is in Oktober 2008 gestig en ons is dus nou eers in ons groep se tienerjare, al is baie van ons se hare al silwer! En soos tieners is ons vol energie, idees, leerlus, steeds ywerig aan die kwilt, geniet ons dit om nuwe kwiltprojekte aan te pak en om ‘n ondersteunende vriendskapsgroep te wees. Ons is ‘n aktiewe groep wat met toewyding deelneem aan Jakaranda Kwiltgilde aktiwiteite en uitstallings. Die Silver Lake Dollas kom elke 2de en 4de Donderdag van die maand, tussen 9:00 en 12:00 bymekaar, met mooi lap en baie kreatiewe kwilt idees. Elke keer vergader die Dollas by iemand anders se huis, waarin die 3 ure propvol gevul word met die wys van pragtige voltooide projekte, gesels oor vordering aan of uitdagings van onvoltooide kwilte, doen beplanning van opwindende tegnieke en kwilte wat aangepak gaan word. Die byeenkomste is ook groot pret, heerlike kuiersessies waarin die lief en leed gedeel word en geleenthede waar vriendskappe gesluit en verstewig word. 9.1. Display Calendar 2019 Home groups that are affiliated to our Guild take turns to display their quilts at our Friendship meetings. Each group gets an opportunity approximately every second year to participate. It is expected that members of the groups that are scheduled to display bring plus/minus ten quilts per group to the venue on the previous day and assist with labelling and hanging of the quilts, with the assistance of the labour on site. Please note that only Jacaranda members have the privilege to have their quilts on display and be eligible for Viewers Choice. Non members are welcome to participate in Show and Tell during the Friendship meeting. 10. JQG Member Contributions 10.1. African Fabric Tour - Erla Cilliers - On 12 January 2019 myself and Tracy Jackson had the privilege to join the ‘Fabric Route’ walking tour in the centre of Johannesburg. Quite paranoid about our safety we left all jewellery at home, and even spent time deciding what handbag would be the safest, yet also with space to put purchases in. So we took the Gautrain from Centurion to Park station, and then set out on foot to the tour starting point, 1.2 km away (will take an Uber next time!). We asked directions on several occasions, and eventually arrived at the right place. I was immediately intrigued by the tour guide, Ishvara Dhyan’s wealth of knowledge regarding African culture and fabric and history of the city. After an introductory talk we started exploring the various shops and he explained all along the way. We experienced the African people – Congolese, Ghanaian, Kenyan, Ethiopian and many others as very friendly and accommodating. NEVER at any stage did we feel unsafe during the tour – unbelievable but 100% true. If you ever have the opportunity to take this tour book immediately! I have researched examples of some of the African fabrics, which we were told about along the way, to share with you. There is lots more information on the Internet.

Baoule: In Côte d'Ivoire, the fabric is affectionately called "pagne Baoulé". The textile clearly finds its name and roots from the Baoulé, Akan people of Côte d’Ivoire, but is more so originating from the 16th century Ashanti Kingdom, which empire stretched from present-day countries of Ghana and Côte d'Ivoire. For centuries, the fabric has mostly been adorned during community gatherings, special events, traditional proceedings and festivities. For many local communities, the fabric is the main source of revenue. And the techniques are transmitted from generations to the next.

Capulana: Being an emblem of cultural heritage, the loin cloth or African fabric is also a cultural identity. Capulana is the traditional loin cloth in Mozambique. Originally it had only three colours, white, black and red. But, today, there are many colours and patterns.

Aso-Oke: Yoruba, Nigeria’s a hand loomed cloth woven by the Yoruba people of western Nigeria. Aso oke means top cloth in the English language. Usually woven by men, the fabric is used to make men's gowns, called Agbada, women's wrappers, called iro, and men's hats, called fila.

Adire: As a distinctive textile type, Adire first emerged in the city of Abeokuta, a centre for cotton production, weaving, and indigo- dyeing in the nineteenth century in Nigeria. The prototype was tie-dyed kijipa, a hand-woven cloth dyed with indigo for use as wrappers and covering cloths.

Bogolan / Mudcloth: Bogolan means ‘made from mud’ in Bambara, the main language of Mali. The dyeing and printing of cotton is entirely organic and safe to the environment. It contains no harmful chemicals and it uses dried leaves and tree bark as dye material.

Kente / Kinta: This cloth, known as "nwentom" in Akan, is a type of silk and cotton fabric made of interwoven cloth strips and is native to the Akan ethnic group of South Ghana. The Akan people choose Kente cloths as much for their names as their colours and patterns. Although the cloths are identified primarily by the patterns found in the lengthwise (warp) threads, there is often little correlation between appearance and name. Names are derived from several sources, including proverbs, historical events, important chiefs, queen mothers, and plants.

Dashiki: The dashiki is a colourful garment for women and men worn mostly in West Africa. It covers the top half of the body. It has formal and informal versions and varies from simple draped clothing to fully tailored suits. A common form is a loose-fitting pullover garment, with an ornate V- shaped collar, and tailored and embroidered neck and sleeve lines. It is frequently worn with a brimless Kufi cap, which is worn in Islamic communities in Africa and the African diaspora, and a pair of pants. The name dashiki is Yoruba adapted word from Hausa for “danshiki” or "dan ciki" means “inner garment” in Hausa, as compared to "Babban riga" that is worn over "dan ciki" as the outer garment.

Kitenge: Kitenge or chitenge is an East African, West African and Central African fabric similar to sarong, often worn by women and wrapped around the chest or waist, over the head as a headscarf, or as a baby sling. Kitenges are colourful pieces of fabric. In the Coastal area of Kenya, and in Tanzania, Kitenges often have Swahili sayings written on them. Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Sudan, Nigeria, Ghana, Senegal, Liberia, Rwanda, and Democratic Republic of the Congo are some of the African countries where kitenge is worn. In Malawi, Namibia and Zambia, kitenge is known as Chitenge. They are sometimes worn by men around the waist in hot weather. In some countries like Malawi, Chitenges never used to be worn by men until recently when the president encouraged civil servants to buy Malawian products by wearing Chitenje on Fridays. The printing on the cloth is done by a traditional batik technique. These are known as wax prints and the design is equally as bright and detailed on the obverse side of the fabric. These days Wax prints are commercially made and are almost completely roller printed. Fancy prints are roller printed with the designs being less colourful or detailed on the obverse side. Many of the designs have a meaning. A large variety of religious and political designs are found as well as traditional tribal patterns. The cloth is used as material for dresses, blouses and pants as well.

11. SAQG 30th Birthday Collection

Please read the flyer below and bring your completed blocks to the June Friendship Meeting where three blocks will be chosen via Viewer’s Choice to be entered into the SAQG’s 30th Birthday Collection. The Collection will be displayed at the National Quilt Festival and also become part of the SAQG Travelling Exhibition.

To celebrate the South African Quilters’ Guild’s 30th anniversary we would like to invite all SAQG members to participate in a small quilt challenge to be exhibited at the SAQG Stall at the National Quilt Festival in Johannesburg in August 2019.

Theme: Time to Celebrate

Size: 30cm x 30cm

Criteria: ONLY and ALL of the 6 colours of the SAQG logo must be used. Any technique or combination of techniques may be used to create the quilt.

Entry deadline: for the completed quilts is 19 July 2019

We encourage each Regional Guild and Country Group to participate by running the challenge amongst their members. We ask them to choose and send three of the entries, to be included for display at Festival. There will be up to 30 quilts which will be selected to be on exhibition.

Individual members are invited to participate as well.

At Festival visitors to SAQG Stall can see the Time to Celebrate exhibition can vote for the Viewers’ Choice and the winner will announced at the Farewell Function at the end of the Festival.

This collection of celebratory quilts will also be included in the SAQG Travelling Exhibition to travel around South Africa for the next two years.
