FRIDAY 6 MARCH: NEWS, NOTICES AND FORTHCOMING EVENTS

Dear parents and guardians, #EachforEqual To mark International Women’s Day 2020, BBC Radio 3 has #IWD2020 commissioned seven very different composers to write a movement each of an a cappella choral work entitled Seven Ages of Woman, where each composer represents her decade. We are really proud of Helena Paish who was chosen to give her perspective as a woman in her teens. Read the full story on page 6.

Since girls were first welcomed to School in the late 1970s, we have cultivated an environment in which girls and boys develop mutual respect and empathy for one another, are exposed to different viewpoints and are encouraged to collaborate and achieve together. In a world in which men and women live and work alongside one another, our school environment awakens a spirit of equality and provides children with the strength and confidence to aim high and achieve together. It’s clear to me that our pupils are being taught to develop their own way of thinking in an environment that reflects real-world communities and workplaces.

Our fabulous cookery school is a microcosm of the equality and empowerment that we stand for. The Leiths Certificate in Food and Wine and our daily cookery clubs and activities are taken up by at least as many boys as girls, led by our inspirational team of male and female chefs. Keeping girls and boys separate risks perpetuating and reinforcing stereotypes rather than actually addressing them.

The campaign theme for this year’s International Women’s Day is #eachforequal and sees a number of missions to help forge a gender equal world.

Each one of us can help create a gender equal world and it is a privilege to lead a school where girls and boys alike have opportunities to grow in confidence and be at ease with themselves and each other in a gender equal environment.

Mr Gordon-Brown, Headmaster

Children of the Night 1991. As the old regimes crumble all across Eastern Europe and the door to the West is reopened, an unexpected opportunity arises for the mysterious Transylvanian businessman Radu. He travels to London with his lawyer friend Jonathan Harker, but when he meets Jonathan’s friends - a group of young professionals living on the edge, calling themselves the Children of the Night - the equilibrium is shattered and the scene is set for wildness and bloodshed.

Combining an epic fable from the Middle Ages and crazy events in a 1990s London bar, Children of the Night reimagines the Dracula myth as a tale of lost love and desperation in a time of turbulence.
