Edition 20 2019/2020 WEEKLY UPDATE: EDITION 20 2019/2020 PAGE ONE: THOUGHTS FROM THE HEAD Dear Parents, Despite the rain, we have many moments of metaphorical sunshine this week, and even one whole day with the real thing. As you will see in these pages, staff and students really took advantage of a break in the rain to prepare the Orchard and green house for later spring planting. I look forward to seeing the fruits of their labour when we head into the summer months. This week we have also enjoyed reflecting on last summer’s examination successes, as we have looked in detail at the Department for Education results. More detail will be on the school website at the beginning of next week, but the percentage of pupils achieving GCSES at Grade 5 or above in Maths and English was an excellent 67% against a national average of 40% and a Cornwall average of 39%. The best performing state-funded school in Cornwall achieved 40%, and St Joseph’s was ahead of many South West Independent schools – including a number with selective intake– by a wide margin. The school’s Attainment 8 score was also in the top two in the county – an outstanding achievement for a non- selective school. Attainment 8 measures a student's average grade across eight subjects and is designed to encourage schools to offer a broad, well-balanced curriculum. With St Joseph’s scoring 57.2 against a national average of 44.7 and a Cornwall average of 45.4, it is clear that this balance is being very successfully struck. Click here for full comparisons. These successes do not come overnight, nor by accident. They come through the hard work of many, and the school environment being one that provides the foundation for the children to build their futures. Moving forward, we have a number of events that I just wanted to bring to your attention: PTA Coffee morning: do pop into the dining room on the morning of the 3rd March for a tea or coffee and a chance to chat with other parents. This will run from drop off until 9am, and then there will be a PTA meeting for anyone who wishes to take part. The PTA would love as many parents as possible to join them. Family Fun Quiz: I am delighted we have seen a big enough uptake to ensure that the quiz on the 6th of March will be going ahead. There is still time to book a table—just sign up in the foyer, or email either [email protected] or [email protected] to book your places. I am delighted that we even have one team made up of last year’s Year 11s who have entered. Mary Poppins: tickets are available for our performances at the end of term. Do book and bring your friends and families, the evening promises to be a fantastic opportunity to showcase the children’s skills. Open Day 13th March – please do spread the word to friends and families to come along – parental recommendation is such a positive force, so thank you all for this. Have a wonderful weekend, do stay safe whatever the weather brings. With best wishes, Mr Scott St Joseph’s School Weekly Newsletter Page 1 EVENTS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS Year 10 Photo Shoot Just before half term the Year 10 photography students set up their own photo shoot in the Textiles room! These are English and maths, up to three subjects from the English Baccalaureate (EBacc) list, and students’ three highest scores from a range of other qualifications, including GCSEs. English and maths are given double weighting to reflect their importance. The EBacc subjects are: English, maths, history or geography, combined sci- ence (which counts as two passes) and a language. In addition, students must take both English language and literature. Scores from the Department of Education are below. • Truro School Public Benefit and Charitable Activity Report 2015-16
TRURO SCHOOL PUBLIC BENEFIT AND CHARITABLE ACTIVITY REPORT 2015-16 Objective 5 of Truro School’s Strategic Plan is: “To be celebrated as a socially and environmentally responsible member of the Cornish community.” This report outlines the range of activities undertaken by the school and its staff to support the local and wider community. Financial Support to families of Pupils at Truro School Truro School is committed to keeping its doors open to as many students as possible from the local community who will benefit from a Truro School education, regardless of the financial means of their parents. Scholarships (academic, sport, music, art, fencing, drama and chorister) are merit based but are small in value, usually 10%. However, bursaries are available which may provide financial support up to a maximum of 100%, dependent on the outcome of means-testing. Special emergency discretionary bursaries can also be awarded, usually for a limited time, when unforeseen financial difficulties arise for those parents whose children are currently in the School. These special bursaries are generally awarded for a key period of education such as completion of GCSEs or A Levels. When available, places are found in the boarding accommodation to overcome a domestic or family crisis. Funding for these bursaries comes from Truro School, the Truro School Foundation, Methodist Independent Schools Trust and some external Educational and Charitable Trusts. Benefits to Local Community The pupils' Community Service Scheme involves Truro School pupils helping with the elderly, young children at nurseries and in charity shops. The School Chaplain leads services throughout the county (including the Royal Cornwall Hospital) as a Minister of the Methodist Church and other staff are lay preachers in the community.

This year our edition of the Truronian and that it gives you a flavour alumni events have continued to grow, largely thanks of what has been happening in your school community to the tireless work of Jayne Grigg, Nicky Berridge over the past year. and Jo Wood in the Development Office and the I wish you all a happy summer and hope to see you at commitment of my colleagues on the committee, to one of our events soon. whom I am very grateful. Rachel Vaughan A great highlight of the year for me was this year’s Teacher of English and Drama London Reunion, which took place in October and Lead Mentor to the Choristers of Truro Cathedral coincided with the Girl Choristers singing evensong at St Paul’s Cathedral. In my other role, as a mentor to the Choristers, I hear these amazing musicians perform on an almost daily basis, but there was something utterly magical about hearing them in this spectacular setting. Following evensong, we had a short walk across the square to Juxon House for our drinks reception where we were able to mingle on a balcony overlooking St Paul’s itself. It was great to see both the rekindling of old friendships and the establishment of new connections between former pupils of a wide range of vintages.

  • Friday Bulletin
truroschool.com | [email protected] Friday Bulletin FRIDAY 6 MARCH: NEWS, NOTICES AND FORTHCOMING EVENTS Dear parents and guardians, #EachforEqual To mark International Women’s Day 2020, BBC Radio 3 has #IWD2020 commissioned seven very different composers to write a movement each of an a cappella choral work entitled Seven Ages of Woman, where each composer represents her decade. We are really proud of Helena Paish who was chosen to give her perspective as a woman in her teens. Read the full story on page 6. Since girls were first welcomed to Truro School in the late 1970s, we have cultivated an environment in which girls and boys develop mutual respect and empathy for one another, are exposed to different viewpoints and are encouraged to collaborate and achieve together. In a world in which men and women live and work alongside one another, our school environment awakens a spirit of equality and provides children with the strength and confidence to aim high and achieve together. It’s clear to me that our pupils are being taught to develop their own way of thinking in an environment that reflects real-world communities and workplaces. Our fabulous cookery school is a microcosm of the equality and empowerment that we stand for. The Leiths Certificate in Food and Wine and our daily cookery clubs and activities are taken up by at least as many boys as girls, led by our inspirational team of male and female chefs. Keeping girls and boys separate risks perpetuating and reinforcing stereotypes rather than actually addressing them. The campaign theme for this year’s International Women’s Day is #eachforequal and sees a number of missions to help forge a gender equal world.
