Halpin February 2007 Preface This thesis contains a collection of journal articles that are published, under review or prepared for submission to international peer-reviewed journals of geology (below). These four publications develop fundamental themes integral to this thesis and are presented in an order which maintains a cohesive progression and builds upon proceeding work. An introductory section outlines the aims and scope of the thesis and summarises the contributions to the fi eld of geology. Common themes from the research papers are examined in a discussion chapter and the main conclusions are summarised at the end. Email: [email protected] Foreword Even after six decades of national reconstruction process by way of agricultural, industrial, mineral, infrastructural and other related developments, India still suffers from low level of development and poor quality of life of its population. Incidence of poverty, malnutrition, morbidity and mortality, and non-literacy are still high among them. Much of these are attributed to slow and low pace of development, and rapid and accelerated pace is seen as a way out. It is however, doubtful if development as has been pursued in the last sixty years of independent India, offers the solution. If it did, tribal India would have been much better placed today than it had been in the past. After all, much of the development projects that India has witnessed in post-independent era have taken place in tribal regions, especially in regions adjoining the States of Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and Orissa. -

It has maintained a unique geographical position at the South Pole for long periods. As the only unpopulated continent, the absence of political barriers or short-term economic interests has allowed international collaborative science to flour- ish. Although 98% of its area is covered by ice, the coastal Antarctic region is one of the well- studied regions in the world. The integrity and success of geological studies lies in the fact that exposed outcrops are well preserved in the low-latitude climate. The continuing programme of the Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition focuses on the geology of East Antarctica, especially in the Dronning Maud Land and Enderby Land regions. Enderby Land preserves some of the oldest Archaean rocks on Earth, and the Mesoproterozoic to Palaeozoic history of Dronning Maud Land is extremely important in understanding the formation and dispersion of Rodinia and subsequent assembly of Gondwana. The geological features in this region have great signifi- cance in defining the temporal and spatial extension of orogenic belts formed by the collision of proto-continents. -
