For the Love of the Cobbles Only those who are in top condition can say that the Ronde van Vlaanderen is not hard. For all others, it is the Way of the Cross. –Andrea Tafi 2 For the Love of the Cobbles A Journey Inside Cycling’s Cobbled Classic Racing Season, and a Ride Across the Hard Surfaces of Belgium and France By Chris Fontecchio Founding Editor of the Podium Café 3 Prologue On a spring afternoon in 1985, I did what I usually did when nothing was going on. I hopped on my bike and rode to my friend Steve’s house. It was spring break and I was home from college with no particular plans, so falling back on my high school routines was like slipping into an old sweatshirt. Those routines consisted of gathering across town -- biking on the nice days -- at either Steve’s house or another friend’s, and if anything like a quorum could be found, basketball or football or some warped rendition of baseball would happen. But on this day there was no quorum. Steve was home, hanging in his room, watching TV. “Check this out,” he said1 as he flicked on CBS Sports, showing a bike race from France. I’d caught a glimpse of the Tour de France before, enough to know the name and register some basic comprehension of the need for some people to race their bikes. Back then I poured over the sports pages every morning, and knew from the agate page (the one with the scores, standings, etc.

  • 99Th SCHELDEPRIJS April 6
99th SCHELDEPRIJS April 6 The weather is really nice and sunny at the time 194 riders (25 teams, 33 nationalities) take the start of the 99thScheldeprijs. Tour de France director Christian Prudhomme is one of the thousands of spectators presents on Antwerp Great Market Square that is packed with people. The early breakaway starts as soon as the official start is given in Schoten. David Boucher, Adriano Malori, Vladimir Isaichev, Baptiste Planckaert and Dieter Cappelle form that break. The maximum gap with the bunch reaches 5’15” but it then starts progressively decreasing and at km 179, in the last but one local lap, Adriano Malori, the only rider still in the lead, is also caught by the bunch. From that moment on, things go very fast. A few crashes take place, evidence of the nervousness present in the bunch. Tom Boonen is the victim of two punctures but he is each time able to come back in the bunch. Edvald Boasson-Hagen collides with a tree and breaks three ribs. In the final sprint, nobody is able to beat Mark Cavendish who wins the Scheldeprijs for the third time in three participations. A crash occurs behind him. Tyler Farrar and Wouter Weylandt are amongst the victims but they are fortunately not badly hurt. This is not Sjef De Wilde’s case and there is concern that he is paralyzed. It is fortunately not the case. Sjef is taken to hospital but he is allowed to leave intensive cares after a few days and he recovers very quickly. Final sprint in Schoten is characterized by a crash.

  • 98Th SCHELDEPRIJS April 7
98th SCHELDEPRIJS April 7 The Antwerp Great Market Square was full of spectators for the riders’ presentation and it must be said that a lot of excellent cyclists were present at the start. The weather was very nice and sunny and everybody was in a good mood. And of course the riders too! Eight of them went in the early break: Niko Eeckhout, Gregory Joseph, Boucher, Ljung•blad, Hayman, Stewart, Lemoine and van Groen. In the final part of the race, the bunch speed was really fast and those eight guys were caught one by one. Because of a Spanish rider’s swerving manoeuvre, Tom Boonen crashed on the Vogelenzang cobbles but he was all the same able to come back in the middle of the bunch and even of launching Wouter Weylandt’s sprint. But Tyler Farrar was stronger than anybody else and he quite easily won ahead of Robbie McEwen, who took the second place for the third time. It is the first time an American rider won the Scheldeprijs. • The Devilish Task of Race Logistics – Then And
The Outer Line The External Perspective On Pro Cycling The Devilishhttps://www.theouterline.com Task of Race Logistics – Then and Now Professional road cycle racing is notoriously difficult and expensive to organize and stage on the open road. Over the past few years, extensive interviews with Mike Plant (founder), Chris Aronholt and Jim Birrell (of Medalist Sports), Michele Acquarone (ex-RCS), and Michael Aisner (ex-Coors Classic) have highlighted the almost "ringmaster vs. the circus" nature of the managerial challenges to executing a top- flight bike race. There are so many examples of gaffes, some of them humorous and others dangerous, that it's a small wonder riders and teams can still afford insurance, races can break even or make a profit, and that the sport has been able to survive. The risks are high, and in the current COVID-19 pandemic environment, the stakes are higher than ever before. Some of the most enduring – and endearing – examples of races not quite following the script unfortunately came at the expense of the riders who almost won them. Most modern-era fans immediately think of Chris Froome’s mini-duathlon on Mont Ventoux in 2016, when the racing went completely off script. Images of Froome running uphill after abandoning his bike with a mechanical problem, combined with underwhelming crowd control measures, came to define that edition of the Tour de France, even though Froome continued on to win. Many other similar examples go further back in the sport’s history. In 1985, a combination of circumstances in the Coors Classic's 12th stage into Boulder, Colorado led to one of the most bizarre finishes in cycling history.

  • Peloton Formations
Peloton Formations by Richard Martin (April 2014 – November 2016) richardmartinwriter.com [email protected] 1 Contents Preface (3) Peloton formations (5) Peloton interview (11) The baroudeur (18) The climber (21) The sprinter (24) The rouleur (28) The puncheur (30) Road captain (33) Who leads? (36) The apprentice’s craft (39) Race day (42) What counts? (45) Ready to jump (49) 2 Preface This is a collection of blog posts, articles and an interview produced between 2014 and 2016. When I started to explore the topic of peloton formations, I was involved in a change programme in an organisation that seemed stuck; weighed down by process, bureaucracy and deference to hierarchy. At the same time, I had joined different communities and online conversations where the possibility and opportunity for doing things differently were being discussed on a daily basis. My interest in road cycling became a lens through which I looked at these alternative practices but also provided a useful metaphor with which I could translate and communicate ideas to colleagues. This is the idea in a nutshell: The world needs responsive organisations. Companies that are agile and adaptive, responding to changes in context and circumstances. In professional cycling, the peloton is fluid. It moves towards its destination with common purpose. Yet roles shift within the peloton as a whole, and within each team, dependent on terrain, conditions and the individual cyclists themselves. Each team will have slightly different objectives on each day of racing. This affects the roles each rider takes on. Sometimes they will lead. On other occasions, they will be in service of their teammates.
