    Where Dreams Come True – Walt Disney and American Cultural Identity Room and time: Seminar Room (Attemsgasse 25, Top Floor), Wednesday, 3:15 - 4:45 p.m. First session: October 11, 2017 ˑ Course number: 512.313 Lecturer: Univ.-Prof. Dr. Stefan Brandt ˑ Office hours: Thursdays, 4-6 p.m. ˑ Email: stefan.brandt@uni- graz.at Description: The name ‘Disney’ is commonly employed to identify the ‘shallow’ and ‘popular’ aspects of the American way of life. It stands for an idealistic – perhaps even escapist – approach to culture that accentuates traditional values and embellishes the romantic dimensions of human (and oftentimes animal) relationships. Since the 1990s, the term ‘Disneyfication’ has been used by scholars to describe the transformation of society into a giant spectacle, consisting of theme parks and superficial entertainment. The spectrum of Disney films (and productions associated with or financed by Disney) is much wider than many movie-goers suspect; it includes animated cartoons (e.g., Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, 1937; Fantasia, 1940; Mulan, 1998; Ratatouille, 2007; Up, 2009; Frozen, 2013; and Inside Out, 2015), sci-fi flicks (Tron, 1982), musicals (Mary Poppins, 1964), as well as documentaries (The Living Desert, 1951) and even avant-garde films (The Straight Story, 1999). While looking at some crucial Disney productions, we will also examine archetypal characters such as Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck with regard to their development on screen/television, discuss crucial topics in Disney movies (e.g., race, class, gender, and nation) as well as scrutinize the phenomenon of ‘Disneyland.’ Primary Texts (Chronological order) Steamboat Willie.

    THE 2020 INVESTOR DAY PROGRAMMING FACT SHEET ©Disney Today at The Walt Disney Company’s Investor Day event, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy announced an impressive number of exciting Disney+ series and new feature films destined to expand theStar Wars galaxy like never before. Introducing the Disney+ slate, Kennedy said, “We have a vast and expansive timeline in the Star Wars mythology spanning over 25,000 years of history in the galaxy—with each era being a rich resource for storytelling. Now with Disney+, we can explore limitless story possibilities like never before and fulfill the promise that there is truly a Star Wars story for everyone.” Among the 10 projects announced for Disney+ is “Obi-Wan Kenobi,” starring Ewan McGregor, with Hayden Christensen returning as Darth Vader, in what Kennedy called, “the rematch of the century.” Also announced are two new series from Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni, off-shoots of the multiple Emmy®-winning “The Mandalorian.” “Rangers of the New Republic” and “Ahsoka,” a series featuring the fan-favorite character Ahsoka Tano, will take place in “The Mandalorian” timeline. Kennedy announced that the next Star Wars feature film, releasing in December 2023, will be “Rogue Squadron,” which will be directed by Patty Jenkins of the “Wonder Woman” franchise. In July 2022, the next installment of the “Indiana Jones” franchise premieres, starring Harrison Ford, who reprises his iconic role. The film is directed by James Mangold. The catchy song, "Let it Go" is used for some TV commercials in Japan, anddoes not appear to be going away soon. Even Tokyo Disneyland offers a special Frozen event- a pa- rade from January to March 2016. This means that people are still enthusiastic aboutthe film. Many commentators have con- sidered the factors of the movie'ssuccess; its powerful sound- track or the content of the film. One of the most influential of Disney's animated films, Frozen was released on November 2013 in the U.S and came to Japan on March 2014. It was based on Hans Christian Andersen's book, The Snow Queen, which was published in 1844 (Wilde 143-144). There are two heroines in the film, Annaand her sister Elsa, which is unusual for Disney mov- ies. Familiallove, in particular sisterly love, is a major theme in 84 Mai Todoroki this film. Besides being the first double-heroine movie for Disney, the story seems quite common and not so special. However, accord- ing to a BBC article, Frozen made $1.219 billion worldwide and has become "the fifthhighest-grossing film in box office history" behind Avatar, Titanic, Marvel's The Avengers and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows-part 2("Frozen Becomes", np). One of the main factors of its financial success was its reception in Japan.

Box 6050, N-9037 Langnes Tromsø, Norway; [email protected] Received: 4 August 2020; Accepted: 19 August 2020; Published: 21 August 2020 Abstract: This paper explores the religion-making potential of a particular secular institution, namely the Walt Disney Studios. Focusing on the animation film Frozen II that was launched in November 2019, the current article enters into debates about the manner in which indigenous religion is part of the commodity presented—how religion is produced, packaged, and staged. In the article I argue that contemporary media-scapes can be seen as agents of religion-making, of religious circulation, and renewal. As such, religion, as it is expressed in Frozen II, is outlined and produced by a particular media-form and shaped as a popular cultural formation. Further discussions about cultural appropriation are highlighted, focusing on how Disney’s reach out for cooperation with the Sámi community can generate new cultural policies and practices.
